the weakest year in there. I feel it was a LOOOOT of classic songs, especially for radio, but not as many albums. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

forces, maybe even four of them, changed at once.

The West Coast....the early G-Funk era basically ended. Got a bit darker for some artists, but less synthy as a whole. And not as much in yo face...the rappers laid back a little bit, from Warren to Quik to Dogg Pound. Even those who were most influenced, like JD, went from a "Jump Jump" synth sound to a "Give it to ya" and "Live and die for Hip Hop" type sound.

R&B...New Jack Swing was clearly done, so it really started sounding Rap influenced, even more so than NJS. They all followed the lead of Mary J's "Real love"...and this ended up influencing commercial Rap, especially by 96-97.

The Down South Bass style went from the 2 Live Crew, Luke sound, and ended up being the So So Def All Star type sound by 96. More melody, more commercialized and not strictly for the clubs.

And for the East Coast...I think the best example is the sound Tribe went for on Beats, Rhymes, and Life, which showed the difference from the sound of NY Rap from 94 to 96. I am sure someone else could expound in detail, but I can almost tell what songs were made in 94 or 96, even if I have never heard them before...a lot of minor elements made it different to me.

over the course of an album, it's actually scary how good he was
the production matched the lyrics, for once, and at that point he'd reached the top of his game
only thing he did wrong is release it after ROTBB, if that album never existed we'd be talking about this as his apex

Listening back to it those bars were LIGHT but he sold the hell out of 'em. I think he was just playing with it, just itching for somebody to take the bait.

just spitballing with conviction, there's not really a thematic string to the bars in each verse or sometimes even from line to line which makes it feel freestyled to me sorta like Snoop on 'Da Shiznit'.

It's still a banger tho with that beat & the off the cuff nature of KRS' performance on it.

He didn't start really 'going in' until track two & then by the time he gets to MC's Act Like They Don't Know you're like 'shiiit, how KRS actually get *better* ten years into his career?!?'

Out of the choices in this poll, the KRS self-titled is a landslide winner for me.

It's actually the KRS/BDP album I still listen to most today, not saying it's 'better' or 'more important/impactful' than a few of the earlier ones but it's the one that remains the freshest listen to me nearly (goddamnwegettinold) twenty years later.

Also, the live album still goes, I appreciate that one more than I did when it first dropped.

It feels 'fresher' to me, perhaps because it wasn't as exposed/heralded during its initial run as Boom-Bap was so it's more of a 'personal classic' than a true classic of its genre (which Boom Bap is).

I can't go there with you on I Got Next, KRS-ONE fairly easily tops that record for my money, however each album from Criminal Minded up through the end of his Jive Records run is worthwhile and has gems on it.

The MC, for example, is one of the most underrated KRS songs ever.

Yes. I've posted it on here before, but I don't enjoy that album nearly as much as I used to. Love the singles, "Back at You," and "Eye For An Eye." The rest of it doesn't enthrall me nearly as much as it first did.

It was a dope punchline emcee over vintage DITC-beats; perfectly fine album and I got what I expected. It's only overrated by people who blow it up as a classic or even masterpiece due to L's death...

Fucking sick song, the beat is evil and the rhymes are pure filth. Yes, the first half is dope, it drops off after that a little and some of the beats sounded very 92-93 to me. I read somewhere it was delayed for well over a year; explains songs like "I don't understand it" and "No endz, no skinz"-very strange to hear that type of jazzy upbeat songs in "noir" 95...

you reminded me how i stopped listening to that album for a while as i felt like i needed a cold shower afterwards. but yeah, some of the beats felt kinda dated.

i think l was your classic one-album-wonder rapper. there were some hot verses and songs later on, but he more or less shot his load with the first album.

Hmm, where do I begin because I see where you are coming from. Was it classic? No. But I remember when it dropped. Yes, some of the songs were fluff but "Danger Zone", "Da' Graveyard", "All Black"? Classic, dark D.I.T.C. production....Big L's ill rhymes? That shit had me charged and want to do damage. At the time, I didn't even know who Jay-Z was, but I memorized his verse off "Da' Graveyard" because I thought it was ill. Nah, it's not Jay of today. This was when having ill styles, flows, and cadences was at the top of the rap pyramid.

In 1995 it was a lot of great hip-hop albums out that I listened to but from that list I gotta say the one album I listened to a lot and still do is "Livin' Proof" by Group Home, with Das EFX "Hold It Down" coming in second, Mobb Deep's "Infamous" coming in thrid, then you got others like Fat Joe "Jealous Ones Envy", & GZA "Liquid Swords".

I didn't say anything about personal favorite. I asked which was the best. I do find it funny that you came on here tellig the person who started the tread what we were voting on. And in my opinion and I hope many other people's opinions, lyrics do end up playing into how good an albums is.

I love the Group Home album. That's a classic all day in my book but I can separate my favorites and best like a logical human being.

You are acting as if there is a generally agreed upon, objective difference between these two-there's not.

Example: Eminem is one of the best lyricists of all-time yet I still do not like him at all.

Most people can't make that distinction.

AZ is one of my favorite MCs of all-time yet I wouldn't put him in a top 25 greatest MCs of all-time list.

Favourite=the one *you* like best?
Best=the best by some objective standards?

Since Group Home couldn't rap very well, they can never be the best, only a favourite, right?

However, Aceyalone raps better than practically everyone in this poll from a technical standpoint, he had concepts for days and so on, yet only one person even mentioned "All balls don't bounce".

Clearly, how much we value various things on a hip-hop album is highly subjective, these objective standards you are implying don't really exist. It's perfectly possible that someone can feel that the quality of the beats on "Living proof" compensates for any weaknesses in the emceeing.

You can still be a better rapper from a technical standpoint and not make the best music. See Soul On Ice. What's so hard for you to understand?

They could feel that way just like I feel they don't compensate.

To me, the marriage of everything should equal the best.

Carmelo is possibly the best offensive player in the NBA but no one is saying he is the best because someone like Lebron plays at a high level in many different facets of the game.

I don't want an album with a great rapper and terrible beats and I don't want an album with great beats and a terrible rapper.

You can play devils advocate all you want homey.

The fact is, when you have great beats matched with great rhymes, you have a better album.

What's your argument otherwise?

Honestly dude, you're trying to be a hard ass for no reason.

My point stands...great beats, great rhymes, great scratching, great concepts and content, great overall production...all lead to a great albums.

The more of these you capitalize on, the better your album is.

Not really a coincidence when considering who they are employing.

I can't even count how many times you've been wrong in this post, not to mention how unproductive and classless your responses are, not only in this thread but many others.

As I said before, I am not the only one to point out how miserable and negative your presence is on these boards regardless of what the topic is.

Funny how he regressed from his debut verses on Lord Finesse's album for Runaway Slave then became a beast all over again once he stopped sharing the mic with Show. I need to get my hands on that EP/demo that ended up being scrapped right before they made this album. The only joint I have is "Under Pressure".

I ended up buying it on vinyl when it came out (then put it on cassette) use to play it for a good while but it never got heavy rotation like a lot of other albums that came out that year; but it's still a dope album.

Years later I copped the cd, found out the cd had a bonus track on it, but the bonus joint wasn't that great.

Damn that's another one that's better than everything on the poll except KRS. I just wish "From The Ground Up" & "Who Falls Apart" were on that album, I think that would have made it a hands down classic. I'll also note that while "All Balls Don't Bounce" was a bit all over the place, it's aged surprisingly well.

>7. Grand Puba - 2000

Aside from the title track and "Play it Cool," side 2 was kinda forgettable. Side 1 (besides "Backstabbers") was dope though.

>8. Lord Finesse - The Awakening

I want to say this was 1996.

>9. Erick Sermon - Double or Nothing

Lot's of dope shit on there, but tracks started to all sound the same by the end. "Tell 'Em" is an all time classic tho.

And I'd say "Coast to Coast" and "Goodfellas" are better than most of these. And "Soul Food" should indeed be on there.

I love that record. Hard to explain why because it's so unambitious and- to quote some guy talking about the career of noise-rock band Tar on another board-a record of strong b-sides as opposed to bangers. Still, it works. I think he updated his production formula quite a bit there and it points towards the style on "Muddy waters" and "Enigma".

As for Lord Finesse, that felt more like an EP with a bunch of interludes added to make it an album. Cool record but the best song (=Actual facts) was a hidden bonus track on my copy and I think both Big L and Show&AG delivered the DITC-heat stronger; it was a bit underwhelming IMO...

He started to sound a little clumsy and not exactly effortless but he was never really a smooth flowing guy IMO, even the early BDP albums-I don't think he was comparable flow-wise with BDK or Rakim but he compensated with other things. Also, his voice in the 90¨'s got more and more gravelly and less "pleasant". Still, it's KRS who had an incredibly ability to just sound like he *owned* the mic and I dug the beats as well...

And mean just the best out of these particular albums in the poll?

Because none of the ones in the poll were the best of '95 or even really getting serious consideration for that spot IMO.

edit: my bad, should've read the responses first!

I probably gave the most run to KRS out of those, so I'll go with that.

It was an EP but the release on Fondle em was 95 even if I know that the songs date from the Four Horsemen sessions and were getting played by Bobbito and appeared on mixtapes way before that...

Anyway, regardless of its origin, I'm fairly sure the original release was 95, if it was out in *physical* form before that, I must have missed it completely...

Dope record either way-Godfather Don was SO nice in that era and Keith I dug more than his later wacky style...

EDIT:The expanded re-release was like 97-98 if I remember correctly...

Your timeline lines up with how I remember it. It still doesn't belong on a 95 "albums" list, but my dates were incorrect.
I need to find that full version of "Checkin' My Style", they cut Don's verse off on "Four Horsemen".

I'm willing to just say "I don't get it"

Since the day it dropped. I loved the singles and a few others like Cuttin Headz but as an overall project, I could never play it through like I did the other first wave Wu solos.

also 2000 by Puba and Dogg Food by Dogg Pound are/were better than ANYTHING on that list, IMO

only ever heard pieces of Big L's joint, never heard G Raps, and Mic Geronimo ain't even in the same hemisphere as the others mentioned

Onyx and KRS were good tho and Das Efx's Hold It Down was dope as fuck... forty-n-a-blunt, you know my seelo

So you never heard some of he albums and at the same time telling us what they're not better than? How's that work?

>Onyx and KRS were good tho and Das Efx's Hold It Down was dope
>as fuck... forty-n-a-blunt, you know my seelo

Indeed they were.

And if you read the post you would know why Infamous, Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Dah Shinin, and Soul Food are not in the poll.

But I guess you didn't read it.

That fact kind of makes the rest of your reply funny.

you're always trying to discredit people's love of certain rap albums from the 90s 'cause they don't fit into your little "this was the era" narrative music choices

to clarify, i was saying that of the ones you listed as poll options, because the others are "certified" classics, Livin Proof AND Return to the 36 are glarring omissions from the choices.

ohh, my bad i didn't listen to two of them G Rap and some of Big L's... sorry this invalidates my OPINION, LOL

again I, ME, prefer 2000 and Dogg Food over all those options. cry. but tham again outside of Quik, you're always bitching about west coast rap anyway

Who am I discrediting? I gave my opinion of those two albums and said they weren't that good. Can I say you're discrediting my opinion by telling me they are good?

>to clarify, i was saying that of the ones you listed as poll

If you read through the post, you would see that I said Living Proof is a classic to me. I just didn't list it. There were 6 spots and I listed albums that I was recently rocking with. Sue me.

>

But technically you can't even have an opinion as to whether or not Dogg Food and Return are better albums if you never heard albums you yourself are attempting to compare them to. LOFL. Come on man, really? I didn't even say you were wrong or that your opinion was wrong. I asked how you made a statement like you did without having heard some of the albums. That's a damn fair question.

Stop bein so sensitive.

>again I, ME, prefer 2000 and Dogg Food over all those options.

How do you prefer an album over something you never heard? Again, I'm not saying you're wrong a d there are other people in here who listed both those albums as being better. I may disagree but that's just a didference in opinion.

I actually like a lot of West Coast music.

I grew up off The Chronic and Doggystyle and The Predator.

I was a huge Xzibit fan back in the day.

Souls of Mischief is my shit.

Pharcyde is dope as hell.

Zion I is great.

I'm feeling the Kendrick album.

Indeed Quik is one of my favorites.

Should I name more?

That second album is a BEAST! The production is on tilt through the whole damn thing and I don't remember one weak song. Even the features were wild.

but I didn't think that for a long time because I associated Cypress HIll with all my stoner friends that ONLY listened to Cypress Hill and Snoop/Dre, ONLY when they were getting high. Otherwise it was shit like Marilyn Manson and H.I.M. and MC Chris. By association I wrote Cypress HIll off for a long time; I wouldn't be surprised if for one reason or another a lot of rap fans have accidentally done the same.
