"I think the Kanye I really dug was just Rhymefest and Consequence"

I heard that remix of Rhianna's Diamonds featuring Kanye West and it sounded it interesting because it was not the dark brooding Kanye of late but rather it sound like an attempt at a throwback to the funny goofy Kanye of his first two albums. Only problem is that it just wasn't that funny.

Dude hasn't made me laugh in a minute to be honest. Which is odd because to me it was his blue collar to middleclass humor and perspective is what was draw in the first place (Who else was rapping about working at the gap?)

The truth is the closest I've heard to that old Kanye wit are on Rhymefest and Consequence mixtapes.

I am not sure the extent they ghostwrote for Kanye (anyone got linear notes?)

Anyone else buy into the theory that it might have been rhymefest and consequence who were responsible for that "Old Kanye" or is it that dude just got rich?

And I blame Cons mostly since he's the (only) one saying it ('Fest never said he ghostwrote for Kanye to my knowledge)

I don't doubt that, in their writing sessions together, a lot of stuff was bounced around and Kanye was like "yeah I'ma use that line thanks fam"

Wu does it, hell a ton of crews do it I'm sure

I don't think Cons -- the same guy who claimed "co-writing" credit for reciting Slick Rick lyrics in Beyonce's "Party" -- or 'Fest wrote entire songs for this dude

Hella fuckn understated. So is lil waynes use of his whole stable of ghostwriters. Kanye done had like 8 ghostwriters n shit. How's his down low use of other peoples pen game overstating the fact that 'ye rhyming other rappers bars? I remember when if u had somebody rhymes for when that shit was considered wack. And to have a whole team of ghost writers writing verses for u on the low? I don't know man.

Any rhyme they've ever spit would sound better if said by Kanye, who has one of the most engaging deliveries I've ever heard in rap.
And honestly "inconceivably bad" is a ridiculous statement, that would imply that their music actually stands out. The real problem is that not enough people care to hear those dudes.

The J Records album was kind of hit and miss, and you can see where he was pandering to the label, but the stuff he's done after (the MJ tribute mixtape, El Che) was all very dope, IMO.

thats not a dis - i like various songs by all of them

but its good that kanye is keeping various rappers hes been affiliated with over the years' bank balances afloat

todays big name rappers work with songwriting stables just like how you get for artists like beeyonce and rihanna

im fine with it

like some people can write very well, BUT they don't have the delivery, voice, or personality to command a niche or popular audience, but with the proper person to spit their bars, shit is gold

this only further proves that while Kanye grand stands as a precocious semi-recluse artistic genius, what is really genius about him (and RZa even talked about this in XXL i believe), is his ability to collectively pull from various people in his rapping and producing. he's like a music factory that makes sure to keep the image of him (from working class rapper to pop mega star) as the focal point. folk can hate Ye all they want, but he knows what he's doing

24. "Wasn't Phonte supposedly a big inspiration on Kanye early on to?"
In response to Reply # 20

Lyrically speaking of course. I can't remember which album it was but 'Ye had a listening party (I wanna say Graduation) and said a certain underground MC that he had worked with early on really inspired him and pushed him to improve lyrically. Later Phonte said it was him and he was mad because he'd rather 'Ye show him appreciation by giving him a feature or something.

It seems to make sense, both go for the funny/witty punchlines and also the introspective tracks about personal relationships (Big Brother & Roses/Doin' Me and All For You)

For the record, I don't think it was ever implied or stated that Phonte ghostwrote for him, just inspired him. Also, I smoke a lot of weed and may be making this all up/remembering it wrong.

it could be just that these cats aren't around him anymore thus their style of rapping is less likely to rub off. Getting rich probably caused the separation and also further fuels the change in tone/subject matter

In response to Reply # 0

posted right here in the lesson.. legendary OG's... saying straight up that QTip jacked their shit &shit was funny on the business end. now i said -- go back and check the archives-- a couple years ago-- that qtip was not producing a lot of things folks thought he was on some of them tribe albums and especially on the ummah side of things. but go back into the archives, and it was majority naysayers talking about 'nah, nah, that aint true. cant be true. qtip made all them tribe jonts.. ' etc. Pete Rock said it, point blank. Jay Dee (RIP) said it , point blank, and Consequence said it, on the rhyme side of things, point blank. these are established, old school OGs. these arent' new young bucks just talking shit. video interviews on all of them.

i been trying to sprinkle game on lil waynes ghostwriting stable for a couple years now too. had naysayers on me like i stole money out there moms purses n shit. lol. that shit's true too tho. wayne had more writers then all of them. haha. it's cool because he's still raw tho.

same thing with kanye. he's still a helluva artist. trend setter. OG on the beats, and plus he can rhyme. plus he's doing it live in front of thousands and millions, and at a high level. so let's give the man his props, but let's keep it all the way real about the situation. it's a fuckn known, 100% fact, consequence, rhymefest, kid cudi, and big sean have wrote shit for kanye on his albums.

whats crazy to me is the naysayers who come thru.. like 'nah man, 'ye aint never used no writers. he dont have nobody writing shit for him'. that's fuckn bullshit, straight up. it's factual information. consequence wasn't sitting on the dj envy radio show just talking shit. that man was talking the real, and was sincere as a mfkr. it's a known fact cudi was side by side with kanye west for the Heartbreaks and 808's album writing shit. its documented, known information.

... I'm not completely sold on the fact of 'Ye though. I feel as it's more bounced off of ideas, taking a line from the homie. As far as Q-Tip goes there's really just like the two occasions that he sample jacked more so than actually stole their work. But hell who knows other than the people who sit in on these stables. And I'm sure a lot of them won't speak on it too much, especially for the new school cats (Wayne, Kanye), because they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.

Nobody thinks he writes *all* his own rhymes. He been comfortable saying that Rhymefest wrote a verse on "Jesus Walks" since day one.
He said on "Barry Bonds" that he "bounces ideas".
I don't know why it has to be all or nothing.
