>>There are enough MCs in the neo boom bap realm (Diamond >>District, Ka, Roc Marci, Black Hippy, Action Bronson, Meyhem >>Lauren, etc etc) that I don't really feel the need to listen >>to dude's music. > >He sounds like none of the people you just name, at all. > >Not even a little bit.
That's because they have their own "take" on boom bap. Joey has none.
>> Maybe dude will mature into a better >>artist/writer but, as of right now, I attribute most of this >>kid's buzz to more effective marketing than his actual body >of >>work. > >"Marketing?" > >What "Marketing" >
Dude's managed by the same guy as Big KRIT and Smoke DZA. That's why Joey got immediate love from all the same outlets that those two artists (Fader, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Nah Right, 2 Dope Boyz etc etc). It's what gets him placements on A$AP's album and Black Hippy features. So, yes, Joey is a product of the same "hipster hype machine" that you're obsessed with. Still, I'm glad you don't diagree with my observation about how underwhelming his body of work is.
>I've literally never seen a commercial or anything, >of any kind. Never heard or seen a promotion until >this Primo thing
I'm not entirely sure why you're talking about commercials now. Why would Joey have one when he doesn't have an album for sale? Do labels even advertise on TV anymore? Has anyone seen commercials for Kendrick or Keef? Those Pitchfork freestyles, and Fader interviews are as much a part of marketing as anything else in 2013.
> >First time I heard of him was the BET cipher > >Googled him, heard his shit, liked it. Odds are that's >how most grownups heard of him
I'm proud of you for being so proud of being so grown-up.
