What lesson heads have said this?

Criticisms of him have been fair. He's a mediocre rapper, with a good flow/voice, and a great ear for beats who appeals to youth near his age for his personality and fashion sense

His videos are appealing as well. Eye candy shit for hipsters and fashionistas.

He has bitten Bone UGK DJ Screw and Lil B and still has his own identity somehow.

LiveLoveASAP was one of last years best mixtalbums.

If you don't like it, cool.

Fucn Problems sucks, Goldie was cool, and Pretty Flacko was fire.

LiveLoveASAP didn't drive me to get all excited about his features, and he mostly kind of falls into the track, but that mixtape was one of my favorite/most listened to releases of 2011. He sounded great with the music, ad some of the more memorable tracks of the year (Leaf, Peso, Purple Swag of course, Trilla, Wassup). Really interested to see how LoveLiveASAP turns out.

Or, you know, whichever is the right order between the tape and album. Most annoying thing about him to me is how similar his titles are so far lol.

Although, him blogging/crying about getting his heart broken by one of those consistently cute streetwear chicks (how the fuck does an industry built on grown men dressing like boys get attract such pretty women?) predates his modern 'Chief Keef hurt my feelings!' emo-rants.

Clothes have always been a part of rap so I don't think it's anything for him to be embarrassed about per se. It just never really worked for Lupe, the way it has for Odd Future or ASAP.

I definitely agree with the people who say his music carries him. From what I can tell,
he doesn't even come up with alotta his choruses. This seems to be the case with much of his
music, and in that case, you're just another guy spittin' raps on a beat especially if the lyrics
or style aren't different or spectacular in some way.

But here's the biggest thing for me... that song with Schoolboy Q made me finally realize what I don't
like about Asap, Drake, and a few other guys rapping right now. They lack passion and presence.
They lack anything that says "I'm worth listening to out of 1000000 rappers rapping"...
absolutely no magnetism or "star power" or what have you.
Take a guy like Rick Ross. Regardless of how I feel about him, he has a distinctive voice and presence on
top of passion. But you don't need a distinctive voice.
Because listen to Schoolboy Q on that track. It livens up when he spits because there's fire in him,
and you *hear* it. I understand this must be a personal thing and damn near exclusive to me alone,
because Drake, Big Sean, etc have successful careers, and not very many people seem as put off by
them as I am, but that's a non-negotiable for me in a rapper.
If you lack it, I cannot fuck with you.

Their styles may not convey said passion in a manner that you, in particular, can connect with. But, they wouldnt be at the level they are at without passion. I completely agree with your views on Schoolboy Q.

Now, Big Sean and ASAP Rocky are two rappers I have difficulty tapping into their passion. They can be described as "swag rappers" who, IMO, lack any real emotional depth.

I'd say, as far as rappers go, there's Style (ASAP, Big Sean, Waka, etc) and Pure Lyrical. ASAP is pretty much all style.

Drake, Kanye and Jay-Z are extremely good at playing both sides. This is why they are TOP 3 right now.

maybe that's just me. but Detroit was a big step up from his previous work which i was already a fan of.

In response to Reply # 42

Of course, this is my opinion though. I despise fakeness irl and otherwise. Big Sean shows
some passion at times, and he's actually believable when he does even if he's just talking about ass,
but I will say that he seems genuine to me. Drake always sounds forced to me. Beyonce is another artist
that sounds very forced alotta times to me, even though I totally respect her talent and like some of her
songs. But with all that said, I must agree that certain people don't connect with me. I hear them when they
are *supposed* to be passionate. I just don't feel them or believe that the passion is genuine.
In light of that, I have disagree with this

>But, they wouldnt be at the level they are at without passion.

I'd replace "passion" with "drive". You really just have to make enough people *believe* you're passionate.
Or like your music enough to wanna believe you or be affiliated with the right team or whatever.

I don't hear anything passionate about him it all seems scripted and rehearsed. He taps into Texas music but I doubt he actually listened to ESG or Lil Keke, he touts Memphis music but I doubt he's ever listened to Playa Fly or Kingpin Skinny Pimp it's all an act. I don't learn anything about him while he raps and their is no depth to his subject matter it's all plastic.

We can disagree about Ross who I find is faker than a $3 dollar bill, and Drake who I think is about to show emotion and in my opinion is able to outshine more lyrical cats on songs (ie Poetic Justice).

Cohesive in that the songs flow from one song to the next and it seems he is at least trying to trim the fat and make albums and mixtapes that are solid from beginning to end. Do that, have the right visual aesthetic, and work with the right rappers/producers and you're pretty much good.

With the exception of Kendrick and Lupe, I don't think these cats are trying to do super complex verses live anyway. Smoke too much kush to remember the lyrics.

It's not like he's slurring on the mic or can't flow; he's a solid but forgettable MC. His beat selection puts him on top; and honestly considering how that seems to be the biggest problem from dudes that stray away from whatever the 'hot' producers are in the moment, it makes him a pretty solid package.

His biggest weakness is probably his hooks aren't as strong as they need to be in his lane...he's not bad but someone like French Montana (who in his current incarnation is a worse rapper), kinda beats him in that category soundly

according to these standards there hasn't been a good mainstream (label that is) MC since the 90's, lol. Im a little more liberal, Ill move it up to the mid 00's with Drake, lol.

My point is if ASAP is terrible where's Lil B at. There's no nuance in the critique....we are just kinda going 'IT ALL SUCKS'.

Asap is an average MC. Ill say he's got an above average flow though, and a superb ear for beats (and a particular 'new' style of beats) which is why we are talking about him now.

To call him horrible is unfair in a world of Waka Flocka's and Nikki Minaj's.

... until "Long Live A.$.A.P." leaked. And I love the album. I think that his strength is that he knows how to craft songs. He knows how to pick beats and he knows how to flow over them. He falls into his joints as opposed to rhyming on top of them. So even if you have a decent emcee that knows how to compliment/make the most of his production, it's definetley something to acknowledge.

That says all that needs to said about how good
or A$AP Rocky is

He's a C level rapper

Glad he's eating, good for him

But don't talk to me about him as an artist, because
he sucks

His beats are pretty good

He's not responsible for any of that, though

I don't know when the shift happened. It's why kats like bammer and O_E would rather rant about the gays and hipsters as opposed to figuring out why certain acts hit the way they do as far as the music is concerned.

Can a rapper be shitty, YUP. Hella popular shitty rappers. But there's a reason why they made a big enough wave that we are wasting keystrokes on em as opposed to the other thousand 'wack' rappers out there, and it's not just marketing (well, most of the time, lol).

if ASAP was a local artist in your town passing out CDs...
if ASAP had a few looks on rapradar but virtually no buzz...

you all would call it EXACTLY how it is. He's average.

I don't watch 106 & Park.

I'm an adult.

I don't listen to the radio.

I don't know who's successful or not. The biggest eye opener was that best selling hip hop artists list someone posted last week.

So if you guys pump something on here or I see it on the internet, I'm gonna check out a song you might post, might check out a video.

If it's not good, it's not good.

I don't know LABeat personally, but I'm pretty sure he's been listening to Hip Hop for a minute. There's nothing that he's not getting. It's just not good.

It's not groundbreaking. ASAP is not bringing anything new to Hip Hop. It's just not good. Could he get better?

Sure.

LABeat is probably just confused.

That's why men 28 years old are up here cosigning Chief Keef

Saying "he might not be lyrical but he creates an energy
with his music"

Um, no.

He's horrible.

The best thing to say about a rapper like Chief Keef is that someone
with actual talent used his youtube buzz to popularize a good
beat

These hipsters get it wrong by affixing the credit to the RAPPER

None of these guys are good

Keef is horrible

ASAP and Wiz Khalifah are C level

Period

End of discussion

No tight jeans ass nigga can argue any differently

I need a rapper that can put together a project, not just spit, because I like to listen to albums not just songs. I also think that, subject matter aside, A$AP is a pretty good rapper. He has a nice variety of flows and he fits his rhymes to the beat well so that you are hearing a song instead of just a beat with some rhymes on it, I think that's a very underrated ability.

Crafting cohesive songs and albums seems to be the focus and strength of many of the young new rappers that are coming out, and while I do miss the greater focus on lyrical gymnastics and pure skill that we once valued, I think that what many of the young rappers are doing is valid and interesting.

>Crafting cohesive songs and albums seems to be the focus and
>strength of many of the young new rappers that are coming out,

Actually, wrong.

The only young rapper who had this focus in 2012 was Kendrick Lamar and
his album was so popular specifically because it was a "throwback" concept-style
album with a whole lot of reverence for and props paid to older rap/rappers

Because other than Kendrick, all of the consensus best cohesive albums
from 2012 were from old people:

El-P, Killer Mike, Nas, OC, etc.

Wiz Khalifah's album, for example, was horrid.

As was Chief Keef's.

Its the *old people* who put out cohesive projects

Young bols are very "go for glory quick." Its smart because
most of them are not very talented and recognize that they
have to get what they want out of the game

A$AP's strength is his sex appeal and ability to grab both street
and fashionista crowds. Similar to Wiz Khalifah with the added
benefit of being from NY (with a broader audience)

>and while I do miss the greater focus on lyrical gymnastics
>and pure skill that we once valued, I think that what many of
>the young rappers are doing is valid and interesting.

No, you don't. You're trying to rationalize liking bad music
because it makes you feel young and hip. It doesn't. You sound
like an old hipster hanging on too long.

Just admit that some rappers are C level and that C level rappers
are what they are: average.

OK. I disagree with you. I'm not saying they're putting out concept albums just that musically it feels like everything fits together even if its the product of a bunch of people.

As to the rest of what you're saying I just listen to music I like so I don't know who I could possibly be trying to front for. Its not like I'm broadcasting what I'm listening to to everyone I see for props I'm just discussing something I like with a bunch of music nerds online. And as far as having bad taste I really don't care, I'm just talking about what I like I'm not forcing other people to listen to it.

Also, I'm not talkin' about all young hot rappers, just explaining why I like A$AP Rocky specifically. I really don't mess with any of those others you named, but only because they're wack.

One of your better posts.

Aside from your usual "hipster" crutch, you done well.

I do agree with the other poster's opinion on A$AP, and I like some of Wiz's stuff (haven't heard the album), but I def feel what you're saying.

Alotta cats have been accusing the south of not being about lyrics and relying on vibe for years.
RZA talked some silly shit on MTV with Sway once and that Lord Jansport cat and others were on here
defending that shit.
Along comes A$ap who's basically a rip-off of that southern style them cats hated so much.
But it's alotta NY cats riding for this dude. I feel like a villain getting the last laugh n shit.
Shit is comedy. It's extra sweet because he really is just an NY cat with a "southern" sound.
It's not like when I was saying "Well Juelz Santana and Cam'ron rap about drugs and killing too"
because cats hit me with "BUT THEY LYRICAL". Well A$ap is everything the southern cats were. He basically
a southern clone born in NY. This is a beautiful thing though, bringing niggas together one ign'ant south-hater
at a time. A$ap does us a great service.

A$AP's songs > Choppa Choppa Down

Pop that = The hook, the features
Now, Shot caller = What NY club/radio needs to sound like (along with "I'm a coke boy") production wise. BUT, we see which song blew up way bigger for him.

Niggas really just need to go ahead and say they don't like anything that isn't made by a NY nigga.
All that shit about the south not being lyrical and having slow beats go out the window when one of them
doin' it... or should I say "doin' the south". Hiding all that hatred behind false justifications LOL.

i'm all for regional scenes, but the idea that someone from _____ is supposed to sound a certain way is myopic 90s bullshit. french montana and ASAP are two of the better new artists out of NYC in years, lulz at dissing them because they're not interested in rapping like buckshot shorty over a large professor beat.

besides, it's pretty clear no one here listens to them, because they're CLEARLY new york city products.

I'm "Mr. West Coast" or even "Mr. Commercial" here.

I never complained about A$AP's sound, that's everybody else.

MY issue with French is that he's not dope at all, and I just don't care for him. He has some bangers, but as I said, it's due to his production and features. I ain't said not one got damn thing about a Large Pro beat. I was really just saying that I feel A$AP is more effective in using the South's style than French.

I mention that Shot Caller is the type sound I feel is dope because it has the "East Coast feel" but it's still commercial enough to work. And I think French sounds best on those beats...he sounds forced trying to rap how he does on slow South songs. He got damn fuckin SUCKS on "Racked up shawty."

that's uninteresting on SOME down south production (where ASAP will try to play around and find corners on the beat even if it's biting Bone Thugs). But when the BPM's move up a little he shows up, and his hook game is pretty good.

In response to Reply # 108

i had to stop using it because people tend to think it means you use mad syllables and big words.
lyrical in my mind just means you take care with your lyrics and try to be witty and have SOME kinda poetic sensibility.

in which case even mc hammer is lyrical
so yea

i stopped using that term
to describe as good (lyrical) vs (non-lyrica) whack
it's inaccurate and doesn't really mean shit

cause i only fuck wit like half his songs to be honest
but his shit that hits....HITS
i think he is a better artist than gibbs, not even comparable really
gibbs is technically better and that's about it
gibbs looks like don cheadle and raps like his finger nails are dirty as shit
his content is tired as fuck
if u are strictly a drug/thug rapper i kind of feel like you need to bring more personality to the table like roc marciano or meek mills
otherwise u just a broke nigga rapping about weight u don't push and bodies you don't have...BORING. at least immerse yourself in the character and make the shit performance art
asap isn't as good a rapper but he is light years better as far as artistically pushing the envelope
the fact that dude basically made his own lane stylistically and is getting hated on here is kind of telling
whether or not you think he's corny or a gimmick you have to admit he's creative and a bit refreshing
ppl first heard him inserting chopped and screwed vocals and were hating
low and behold peers like kendrick lamar are now biting asap and experimenting with vocal pitch and tone in their songs

>asap isn't as good a rapper but he is light years better as
>far as artistically pushing the envelope

>the fact that dude basically made his own lane stylistically

>whether or not you think he's corny or a gimmick you have to
>admit he's creative and a bit refreshing

Note how none of this has anything to do with the guy's
ability to rap.

Its all his choice of clothes or colorful videos, etc.

Dude is not nice. Give the fuck up.

If you like it, cool

You seem like a solid dude overall, but you're poor
excuse for an adult

ain't much more complicated than that really
artistic vision is huge when you are trying to create an album that people are going to actually enjoy listening to
rhymes + beats + content
style and artistry are extra but they usually only makes the music BETTER (the case with asap)
some niggas like you only care about the words being put together. they listen to gibbs and immortal technique (lol)
other people like enjoyable creative digestible music that sounds good. they listen to KL and Asap and a bunch of other artists ppl actually care about

Because if he sucks at rap, he shouldn't rap.

If you like the niggas clothes or the way he
raps, then good

He should do that for a living

Sounds like you're just an old nigga justifying
like teenage music, though

That's almost surely what it is

I'm not saying he is the best rapper or that his album is the greatest but I like it. I think it is really good. Even though he isn't in the vanguard of whats right with young rap artists (I think that's kendrick) I do think that he is making good music.

There are much wacker cats that old heads ride HARD for and I won't even mention them because I don't wanna start an argument.

I like the music that Asap Rocky has made more than the music that Danny Brown has made.

Hipsters like eccentric, creative SINGERS and ROCK
musicians

But Hipsters only like faux-thug commercial RAPPERS
with FEW exceptions

I know, its weird

Hipsters would shit all over a group like
Tribe Called Quest if they came out today

Uh

All shows are > 50% hipster these days

Hipsters like guys like Rozay more than DB

DB just spits on some rap shit

He's kinda weird, but hipsters don't really like
eclectic dudes the way you think

They think liking Rozay makes them authentic
