"Poll question: Who has a better flow overall, Andre 3000 or Big Boi?"

I'd say that on some songs, Andre had a better flow, such as "Rosa parks" and "Return of the gangsta"...while I'd say Big Boi had a better flow on songs like "Benz or Beamer" and "ATLiens."

A lot of people who are Andre fans/stans will say that Dre's flow has always been better, but I wouldn't agree. I feel like the reason they were so balanced is because Dre's lyrics were better almost all of the time, but Big Boi's flow was always on point to where you wouldn't get bored during his parts or feel like "man, Dre needs to go solo!" as you do with most duos. I even feel Daz and Kurupt were like this...I was a fan of Daz's flow a lot more.

It might be a choice of preference. To me, Dre tends to do the off beat ramble flow a lot more/better, which is what he did on "Return of the gangsta"...and on some songs, his lyrics and delivery combined with the flow make his overall package better, such as that last verse on "Elevators" with the "check to check...if you don't move yo feet, then we don't eat" part.

Big Boi's style was based off of that triplet style that was big in the early 90's (Brotha Lynch, Snoop, Pharcyde, Das EFX), especially on the first few albums, but usually stayed on pocket and didn't stray off beat much. I think "Benz or Beamer" is the best example of how he used that.

I'd probably say that Dre's delivery as a whole is better, mainly because of how he uses his voice and sometimes goes into singing even when he's not singing like on a Hey ya or Prototype...but for the flow part? Eh. I'll read the arguments and decide.

Poll result (41 votes)
Andre by a lot (16 votes)Vote
Andre by a little (3 votes)Vote
Equal, nearly equal...every song is different (11 votes)Vote
Big Boi by a little (9 votes)Vote
Big Boi by a lot (2 votes)Vote

whereas Dre was arguably as good as possible circa "Aquemini." I was pleasantly shocked by how versatile (while still sounding basically like himself) Boi was by the time of his first solo. His tracks since then have shown he's still growing and deepening as a rapper.

Big is definitely nice and has even been improving but at times he tries to fit too many words in a line and isn't always that smooth when doing so.

Andre, on songs like Rosa Parks, Black Ice, and B.O.B. (which BB kills too) is flat out amazing.

Eminent is up there as well but his flow is more harsh and constant whereas Dre has more soul to his delivery and is more dynamic.

there are several southern rappers that would like a word with you
Andre at this point couldn't even make it out of Roscoe's chicken and waffles, Andre has yet to show he can lyrically or conceptually, command an entire hip hop album by himself - all that gimmick shit he does can't last for an entire album of spitting

Dre as of late has lacked soul to his delivery, and just because something is dynamic does not make it better, at times Dre sounds lost in his own forced robotic flow, and you saying big boi is wordy, like Andre aint

Well, he's reached the point where he's many of our favorite
rapper's favorite rapper. I've seen interviews
where both Em and Wayne have said as much. And, NO, I'm not saying Wayne is a great rapper.

Disagree wholeheartedly. I think he's added a LOT more soul to his flow as time progresses. For example, revisit the Drake song I mentioned in the previous post and his verse on UGK's International Player's Anthem.

I DO also think that he has overdone it on some features where he erred too much on the side of complex, such as on Frank Ocean's album and on Beyonce's Party.

At the same time, I'm not the type who will say that BB is only a serviceable mc. He is quite above average in most categories and especially in the flow department. He has a great flow and has for the most part has held his own against someone whom many consider to be one of the greats. BUT his flow HAS always been too wordy and lacking tremendously in the content department.

There just aren't many verses from him that I want or can even remember when the time comes to speak of hot verses.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

Like we most people think Andre is the better rapper, but you can't say he's better than Big Boi at every single aspect of rap.

Some cats would react like, "Big Boi has a better FLOW than Andre?!! He kills Big Boi! He top 5 all time!"

Sigh

Some folks were true Outkast fans and knew their songs. Some just felt Andre is way better, and don't realize what I mean when I said "flow" so they couldn't debate it.

Not because I don't know which is better. I'd say Big Boi is without question, but every now and then Dre comes out and kills it.
From what I've heard, it's been like this at least since ATLiens (possibly earlier).

On a generous day, I'd vote one of the last three. On most days, I'd vote one of the last two.
As much credit as Big Boi gets, he's still kind of underrated-- especially when Dre is brought up.

Between Rosa Parks and Black Ice, Big Boi has never written that intricately. Andre's usage of internal rhyme schemes as well as various rhyme patterns such as Gasoline Dreams and So Fresh So Clean put him over the top of not only Big Boi but just about anyone in my opinion.

Dre moves around beats much more loosely and doesn't always just rhyme on the 4. He bounces from bar to bar and meticulously pens some of those verses. He also changes his speeds better than most with that start and stop flow that he utilizes some times.

Big Boi pretty much sticks to the script and uses end rhymes.

that doesnt take away the fact that at his height, very few rappers were even in his stratosphere.

and that doesnt take anything away from big boi. that nigga 3 stacks is/was just superb at rhyming.

And the fact that he's not a slouch by any stretch of the imagination, at a certain point he just kind of hit a glass ceiling with his emphasis on primarily flow, which both him and Andre were guilty of on the first album.

But Andre STILL always had the edge flow wise.

I'll say one thing that Big Boi always had over Andre was this anticipatory, build up kind of flow when he's starting a verse (similar in effect to a riser or upwards filter sweep in dance music), but, most of the times it just lead to him going straight into his same ole flow, which was always a tremendous letdown.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

People really don't understand that the combo of Dre and Big is what made them so great.

And from our view point in late 2012, it looks as though Big was the driving force behind a lot of what we loved.

Speakerboxxx, SLLF, and VLDR sound much more in line with the natural progression of Kast as we loved them.

Take those three albums and add Dre in the mix and I really don't think they would have fallen off at all and would be lookig at 7 great albums. Shit, 8 if you go the route of Bigs Idlewood songs.

Obviously Dre adds a lot as well, but so far his output has been The Love Below and the terrible half of Idlewild.

Big kept Dre grounded.

thats such an awesome song...

I’d rather sojourn into self till I reached the epitome of spiritual splendor
Haters fender bender beat down and ostracize the dreamer
But its more than dreams when the inner light is revealed through the cracks of façade-stephanie (me)
