But I really didn't like SLLF much at all when it first dropped and then it ended up being one of my favorite albums of 2010. It's Big Boi so I owe it more listens. Definitely VERY left field though.

fun. and Fall Out Boy but unfortunately I'm not THAT familiar with the work of either

I guess it's more the general, and admittedly undercooked, idea that he's going for a more quirky, yet not-quite-out-there, pop direction from Sir Lucious Left Foot. It's just the first thing that I thought of.

Generally speaking, it all works for me. Certainly not as funky as SLLF, or even Speakerboxx, for that matter, but certainly crunk in spots (that T.I. and Luda joint goes hard), and definitely not as commercial as our more mellow commercial rappers that are out nowadays...

Standout cuts for me are Apple of My Eye, In the A, Thom Pettie, Lines, Shoes for Running, Raspberries, Descending, Higher Res (which is as close to a Little Dragon homage as you'll get in rap, imo), and She Said OK. Shame he couldn't work something out with dream collaborator Kate Bush.

As best I can tell, I think that Tremendous Damage and Descending are supposed to work like one continuous suite to close the standard edition of the album (the last three tracks are listed as bonus tracks on the deluxe edition). I love Descending because it is quite vulnerable, real, and risky, and I actually dig when our rap vets take risks like this. I'll have to listen to Raspberries and Shoes for Running again just in case they're also supposed to be included in the suite... musically, the album is very good, though I was getting a little weary of all of the blips and bleets after a minute... but still, all in all, it's a really strong record...

OutKast and Big Boi always pushed the envelope but it was all in line with the funk. This album here is some other shit.

This album works more as a side project with the prospect of a real Big Boi solo LP to follow. It doesn't +sound+ like him. Sales be damned.

I doubt this moves a lot of units, there's not one song as catchy and dope as Shutterbug.

It makes me wonder what the tracks sounded like before Dre made that comment that they sounded old school.

ask The Roots how that works out.

Big Boi's last solo album sold more than any album Wavves, Little Dragon, Phantogram & ever put out. Maybe even more than a good number of them all combined.

The only genre that gets more pub & sells less than rap music in the download era is these Spin/Pitchfork blogger bands.

This album will be sold mostly to holdover Outkast fans.

They both have interesting collaborations with artist that you wouldn't expect on a hip hop record and have a indie music vibe but common did a better job in my opinion of making it his album and making it still sound like hip hop. I feel like alot of artists are trying to do this nowadays and Common was/still is shunned for it.

I like the Big Boi album, and I know a ton of people aren't going to agree with me about Electric Circus but I honestly feel it is one of the best hip hop albums of the last 15 years.

This is something of a disappointment. There were a few tail-wagging-dog moments on SLLF, but not like this. He feels like the guest artist on a bunch of these tracks, as someone hinted at below. I don't feel a unified/coherent sound either (or it just may be that the sound i'm hearing doesn't sound particularly suited to him).

That said, he's still rapping his ass off. Which kinda makes this more of a shame.

But one thing for sure is, regardless on whether you love it, like it, dislike it, or hate it, it's VERY different. As someone above stated, it's like an alternative album with rapping on it. Not what I was expected, and not what I was hoping for from Big Boi. I get what he was trying but don't think he was able to pull it off. Maybe it will grow on me, but after three listens or so, I'm just not into it.

lemme tell you, this album SOUNDS really good, it's got a lot of neat stuff going on.

but I didn't get in a full listen last night and won't get back to it til this afternoon after work, so I can't really stand by what I'm about to say next. But through the first listen that ended at "Raspberries" I felt like I was barely noticing when Big Boi was on the mic, and the bands he was collaborating with were stealing the show.

Still, it sounded like a lot of fun, so I'm definitely excited to really start sinking my teeth in tonight.

I was HEAVILY disappointed and now I see why...these tracks can't be recreated with just him, bass and drums...they NEED synths' and live singing...a full functioning band (where in the old 'kast/big boi days a live bass player and drums would be enough)

Im still on the fence but I have to give it up to him; I expected him to drop funk influenced records until he died

I get the mixed reviews.

You can hear him having fun. Almost sounds like he's having more fun on this album than he's ever had making an album before. I don't think he was really "going" for anything other than having fun, and making music with artists he listens to. OutKast has always cited non-hip hop friendly artists as influences. This sounds like he's just making music with them now. I mean, this is the RAPPER who kept talking about how much he wanted to make music with Kate Bush. That considered, I'm actually kind of surprised that something more like this hasn't come out from him or 'Kast sooner.

True. I don't really get some of the reactions here. This is the same man that co-wrote "B.O.B." Speakerboxxx/The Love Below speaks for itself as an example of how outside of the box him and Dre could be. Outkast helped establish the alternative indie hip-hop scene post Gen-X. Kendrick, Kid Cudi, Ab-Soul, Tyler the Creator, a lot of Gen Y rappers were directly inspired by Outkast, and all of them are a part of the indiesphere in one way or another.

because i was not familiar with the sound in relation to big boi.

it sounds like a hipster futuristic album.

don't get me wrong it could end up being good but the overwhelming skinny-jean/glowstick-style of the sonics is something that I need to be more mentally prepared for than I was when I clicked 'play' on the stream.

I like that Big Boi said 'fuck it' & really went left with it, this is actually on first run-thru as jarring as Love Below was on Andre's side or maybe even 808 & Heartbreaks in terms of where each took it (because like this one, you were kinda aware of a sharp turn ahead but that still didn't mean you truly saw it until you got there).

I can't get over how dumb that 'Thom Pettie that ho, freeballing' screwed chorus is or why they kept Little Dragon on that one but switched on Mama Told Me (though when I got to that song I felt relief in the familiar & thought Kelly sounded fine on it).

This joint is almost like what 'Supernatural' was for Santana, a compilation album weaved around Big's flow like that one around Carlos' guitar-tone.

Feels almost like Big sending a message to his partner to say 'oh you the weird one? get off your ass & try to get weirder than this or stop fucking around & let's make another Kast album. Either way, I'm going in & gonna go get this festival tour money.'

Production-wise the Phantogram tracks sound best initially, Mama Told Me is the only song that sounds like it has any chance of being a big single & I kinda dig that slow Descending joint with Big singing alongside Little Dragon.

More than a couple of these hooks/singers give me that 'No make up today-day-day-day' feeling from Section 80 which is not a compliment.

By the time the UGK joint & She Said Ok come on at the end they feel like the bonus 'rap' tracks rather than part of the album we just heard but at that point Pimp C's voice feels like that moment when you bump into an old friend at a weird party where you don't really anybody except the host who's busy working the room.

Gave me the urge to put on 'Three Sixteens' at ear-splitting volume to splash some cold water on my face.

And c'mon, Bun.

Did you really need to use that zanger/fanger/stanger rhyme scheme from 'Sippin On Some Syrup' on this joint 12 years later?

We know you ain't really switched the flow up since Dirty Money but no need to rub it in our face, we've been through a lot already with this album.

Very premature assessment but the gut reaction is more 'yikes' than 'yeah' on first run thru.

straight good ass music and fluid rhymes. Goof for Big for bringing something a lil different to the front. This has been solid background music in my studio with unconscious head nodding the whole time. What more do you want.

The joint with UGK & K.R.I.T. serves as the ultimate tease, because thats what I wish this album sounded like. Not really into this new sound Big is pushing.

Props for trying something new, but it ain't for me.

but I WILL say that the most memorable part of the album for me is when Big Boi

"the time after that AND the time after that on "Objectum Sexuality". Everytime I hear that I feel like the album's about to kick into overdrive, and then get sort of bummed when it starts stumbling around instead.

I agree that 5 may be a stretch. I like it, but 5/5 is a rare thing, I think. Given that, shit sounds absolutely nothing like house music.

Big's previous solo and "Speakerboxxx" were both great and he has the proven ability to change his style at will. Even if you don't dig this (I'm still figuring it out) this is hardly a permanent indicator of what he's capable of.

Also, the irony here is that apparently it was Andre that made Big go in this direction anyway (by telling him "You still doing this funk shit?" when he heard some of the tracks Big was working on post-SLLF). So if this is a lesser effort than his previous one, maybe it's not entirely on him.

As a matter of fact, real musicians may consider the boom bap hip-hop that you love to be "musically horrendous"

I understand not liking it and I wouldn't expect you to like it, but it is not, by any means, "musically horrendous"

that's it, that's all, 'ya estuvo'(c)Kid Frost

as for 'musically inclined', that generally has meant innately/naturally gifted with the ability to play music.

We know that Mozart was that based on reading up on his history as a child prodigy.

It's safe to assume Swizz Beatz' late 90's keyboard claptrap that he was churning out back then was something that wasn't taught to him at Berklee or Julliard or even PS#22 Music class before it got cancelled for budgetary concerns, so on some level Swizz Beatz could be considered 'musically inclined' as well.

However Mozart's compositions were far more musically complex/intricate than Swizz Beatz.

None of that would make someone factually incorrect for saying that the music on Big Boi's new album or Mozart's 'Piano Concerto #21 Adante' was 'horrendous'.

You can call it a simplistic or perhaps poorly-articulated criticism but it's still a subjective opinion that can't actually be disproven.

And if you're gonna criticize him for doing so, it'd be well advised not to word your objection in a way that can in fact be invalidated itself.

I took into account who I was responding to. Personally, for me to say something is musically horrendous, it would have to technically be poor music. Even music I don't like and isn't up to my taste, I can separate its quality and my opinion of it. That's how I look at it. Horrendous musically to me means that something is out of key or that the wrong notes are being played, which would not be the case with this album.

A lot of music that is seemingly in the wrong key or uses wrong notes may fit perfectly well into other musical systems and what one person experience as ''wrong'' is also based on their tolerance for dissonance (dissonance that, BTW, may very well still fit perfectly well into a tonal system); I've heard people say that fucking *Steely Dan* sound ugly and out of key...

Anyway, I think it is perfectly possible to dismiss Mozart's music as "horrendous"; it's pompous, overblown and has a tendency towards certain progressions that sound very saccharine, corny and non-edgy in the context of now. Classical music gets away too easily IMO based on its "Objective", establishment/academic-approved importance status...

All of this reads as someone dying to be different for the sake of being different. And that's what it boils down to. There is no way for one to prove anyone's opinion as being genuine but, I will say that people love to be different just because and a lot of what you typed comes off as an excuse for it.

I think it's too progressive for a lot of the folks not feeling it. Maybe hip-heads are looking at this the way old-school jazz-heads looked at Miles Bitches Brew or how traditional rock and roll fans looked at Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles more experimental music. It sounds pretty cutting edge to me, and is even a step further than what a lot of the indie artists are doing right now. As I stated above, this isn't exactly brand new territory for Big Boi considering his eclectic catalogue with Outkast. But now that we know Big Boi can tackle this kind sound effectively, I'd love to hear him collaborate with Animal Collective. Panda Bear said that Dilla's Donuts was one of his favorite albums and that he listened to it all year when it came out.

it's really not that experimental or cutting edge fam. This has been going on in hip hop over the past few years. Big Boi is actually kinda late to the party.

this album definitely sounds like what's poppin' at the indie clubs. This is all that post-LCD Soundsystem / Drive Soundtrack synthpop darkness. Check out Chairlift, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98XRKr19jIE

And the vocals on one of the Phantogram songs, I think it's "Lines" but part of me is leaning towards "CPU", are straight out of Emily Haynes' playbook

On paper this looks great; Love LD, Phantogram, and Big Boi. On first listen, was not executed well.

The comment above about Big seeming like the guest on many of the songs is apt.

Parts of it were jarring, and not in a good way. The sequence: Objectum, In the A, and She Hates Me was like....what?

Strikes me as being "different" for the sake of being different.

I like it waaaay more than Sir Luscious Left Foot.

There isn't a single dud on here, like this shit's thorough.

Follow Me, Turns Me On, Hustle Blood, were serious drags on his last LP.

Nothing on here is touching Fo Yo Sorrows though imo, but it's still a way better album over all nothing's getting skipped.

In The A is fire
Shoes for Running really suprised me didn't think it would work with Wavves and B.o.b but it does.

Lines is obviously dope

For the record, there are some dope tracks on here that I really like.

I also respect and am glad that he went a different direction.

But some need to pump the breaks on calling this "amazing" and "too progressive for people to understand"

He is trend hopping, basically. Jay isn't allowed to do that, why is Big Boi?

I guess maybe because this is a better product...which I can clap to that...

but lets not get out of control calling this album amazing or progressive. Or compare it Game Theory.

Since when does Big Boi follow?

Since when is he background music?

Just wierding me out.

And I'm sorry but, can someone point me to an amazing verse on this thing? Maybe I'm missing it but I have yet to find a verse that makes me go "damn"

but plenty of bands like Phantogram and Little Dragon have a decent following.

I love this album. Now if I wanted hip hop or rap I wouldn't love it but I've never been a Big Boi fan when it comes to rap. All he wrapped about was getting his dick sucked and being cooler than a polar bears toenails.

Seems like Big Boi finally hit the blunt Dre left in the ash tray and made some music with a message.

Yeah, this ain't that much of a departure. It's alright.

Shoes for Running and Thom Pettie are hot garbage. The last few tracks slow the album down in a really weird way (though I do like Raspberries), and turns this from a Big Boi jawn to Electric Circus (not a good thing).

Everything else is fire, especially CPU. *scratches head* I don't see him going full Andre--next album will either smooth things out and get a bit more grounded, or a total departure (again). At least he's still rapping.
