"Why so many stars out of VA?"

Particularly with hip hop/rnb music?

Hampton Roads isn't known for much other than being a suburban military town with a beach. Why has it produced so many urban pop stars?

Maybe not so much now, but we've seen the following all come out of Hampton Roads (Norfolk/Va Beach/Hampton/etc):

- timbaland and magoo
- missy elliot
- pharrell/neptunes/NERD
- aaliyah
- ella fitzgerald

And then in Richmond you've got D'angelo.

What's the deal?

uh chance?

There's a lot of people making music

a few of them got lucky and caught breaks

*You forgot Chris Brown, Trey Songz, and Clipse btw.

I see you included Richmond so you're not limiting this to the HR area.

It's probably me looking too deep into it, but I feel like Pharrell and Timbaland were able to appeal to the Northeast and South because of what they soaked up due to Virginia's location...being inbetween, technically the South, but still close to the Northeast in location and culture. So they didn't ONLY hear South music like many states in the South do, and heard enough East Coast, especially before they became big in 96-98, to incorporate both sounds and then create their own sound.

Their rappers have been similar...seem to have a hybrid style, where you'd believe em if they said they were from NYC or the South, such as Pusha and Skillz.

I have said that Texas was similar, which is why their sound was always a hybrid of South and the West Coast back in the day. They had the laid back vibe and basslines of the West, but the bounce and vocal delivery of the South. And it may have been because of their location...they were the closest Southern state to the West Coast.

Even T-Pain being in Tallahassee was similar...he was between Atlanta and South Florida (Tampa, which had a strong club scene in 2002, and down to Miami), so he learned how to make music that appealed to both sides, since Tallahassee didn't have it's own sound.

To this day he said most people he knew played mostly Black Moon and that type of shit the most

Dudes were claiming 'East Coast' for the Celtics / Lakers finals

A lot of NY people from 'up top' end up down there so it's just hand in hand that they dig NY shit

claim to be from the South.

It does seem like early and mid 90's, they identified more with NY. Pharrell n Timbo's demos sounded EXACTLY like Native Tongue. They morphed that into a sound that showed a bit of that style, but was on some diff shit.

I am from VA and I would also argue that we are not "the South". Surely the state has conservative strongholds, especially in the mountains, and Richmond is the former capital of the South, but the state is too diverse to pin down, and Richmond nowadays is a "liberal flower" (lol, my friend's quote) in a sea of red. I'm from the Eastern Shore, which despite being "country" votes democratic every election. Surely we have elements of the South, but I think the true South lies in places like Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, etc. Geographically speaking, it lies smack dab in the middle of the east coast of America.

PS I haven't heard those demos, but sounds interesting.

of California aren't "The West Coast" b/c it's hours from the beach and probably vote Republican.

As said...yeah, y'all were THE head of the South historically...and many people argue that Miami and some parts of Florida don't feel like the traditional, stereotypical South, which is true. But if you want to define the 4, maybe 5 true regions of America, VA definitely falls into the South...DC might have an argument, and of course that means Northern VA would like to be in that argument as well. But to me, it's West Coast, Northeast/East Coast, the Midwest, and the South....and maybe the Great Plains would describe the "Flyover" states like Montana, Dakotas, and even Colorado.

But yeah...I get what you're saying, but I think most folks still accept VA as being the South. And the demos are dope

i went to college in Charlottesville, where it DOES feel like the South.. Richmond still feels like the South Lite to me.. i think "southern" is a state of mind and if someone doesn't rep. being southern in a state like VA, they're not southern haha.. half of the ppl i knew growing up wished northern va was a different state..

so it's definitely a pride thing from how I see it. Yea, it's closer to the Northeast, and may not be 100% Southern in "culture" and state of mind...but to deny it being the South is just wrong to me.

I think the North is seen as being "cooler"...more educated, faster, etc etc so that has to lead to why folks in those areas would rather claim the North.

But I think DJ R-Tistic is on the right track, all jokes aside. Sitting in the Mid-Atlantic, along with people not originally from there settling down (at least long-term temporarily via military assignments), would play a role.

I think the story is Devante use to record in that studio. His song writers were Missy and Timbaland (I think). Teddy also use to let the young Neptunes fool around in his studio.

I read the long history and the connections in a NYT piece a few years ago and was amazed how the history of these acts were all connected.

It makes you think how schools all need music programs.

VA has always benefited from being one of the first stops from NYC so there is that influence but being sufficient in the south to benefit from Southern Culture as well.

Speakin of Church, I take it that you're from or either live in "The Hill" in Richmond?
I was born and raised there! My boy DJ Reese used to do the 50 Tungs 100 Lungs
Mixtapes with local rappers and producers with original material on em.Can't think of
any of those guys that eva "made it",even though the were all dope to me. I'm a little
bias anyway! lol
