Today's the day. I've been waiting for this joint for months.

Stone's Throw, you get a feather in your cap for this one.

This schitt right here:
http://soundcloud.com/stonesthrow/karriem-riggins-summer-madness

puts me in the mind of the days when cats would flip schitt "lovely".

Karriem got the ears, Karriem got the heart & soul... not many in the music game can make that claim.

Your favorite producer already knows this brother got heat.
Do you?

the amount of musicianship in a beat tape format is a breath of fresh air.

Whereas I be wanting ?uestlove to put more chops in his riddims as opposed to the amount of "sheen" he captures in the productions. I'm really finding myself listening to how this motherfucker rocks his kicks and dances on the hi-hats, ride cymbals on first listen whether the drums are programmed, played or sampled.

If Hip Hop music in it's purest form was about "catching the beat". Karriem really does capture as a musician the same essence of the "drum parts", or "breaks" that initially captured that first generation of Hip Hop heads.

Like I said, I've been waiting on this guy to expand his presence & voice within the Hip Hop genre.

started violating by rapping over Dilla's beats and putting them out without permission.

You meant to say Madlib tries to adapt to any sound he's feeling...he does a good Dilla, sure.

He' was smart enough to align himself with Karriem after he Jay-Z'd the "King of the Beats" title the same way Jigga Man put it everyone's mind that he was next in line for the throne after B.I.G. died.

But Madlib is best as a sampling artist, period. Otis got a lot of records, Otis puts out A LOT of product. But Otis don't have a real solid track record for "HEAT".

And I don't want to hear him touch any instruments at all ever.

No disrespect to Madlib. But Stones Throw has great art direction and pays for a lot of ads.

I bought the Alone and Together LPs separately just to show my support, but I'm not gonna lie.....it's didn't exactly blow me away like I expected.

That "12s in 8" track (now on 45 when you purchase the wax from ST) is better than anything on the album.

I'll give it another spin sometime soon.

album...

Dill Cosby starts out strong, holds it down for 3 songs and then gets splotchy as fuck and plods a little to heavy with the lethargic beats/dialogue combos.

And that fucking shrieking on about 5 songs just irritates the hell out of me.

I viewed this as a solid release for a minute... thinking, "Well, It's got something of a Dilla feel...Good enough", but listening to it and rating the tracks track by track in my iTunes...it didn't hold up well.

Just like the K.Riggins joint, it's got stuff I'll drop in mixes and on playlists...but I wish the stronger material was fleshed out a little more.

>nothin' sounds really usuable as a rap SONG

My thoughts on a grip of the stuff I like/love on this is, "What would a bridge be for this?"
I'd love to hear this stuff fleshed out.
I hear a lot of potential, and a lot of this schitt would just be sick to cut/scratch doubles of.
*shrug*

>cool for like demo joints.

It's like an album full of interludes.
>or whatever

some of the transitions are aimless. Yes.

>i don't like these instrumental type lps
>save for donuts, which seemed to have a theme

"songs about death & dying from a dying producers perspective"

>and a flow, this just seems like outtakes put together

the cohesiveness is lacking. and like we agree, some of these tracks could be fleshed out into monsters.

>this just goes to show the divide between dilla
>and all his copy catters, even madlib

I love how folks are divided over making a playground out of Dilla's nuts or Madlib's nuts.

I will always see Jay Dee as an innovator.
I will always see Madlib as a good producer with a lot of schitt I don't like AT ALL. (that nigga is lucky to have Peanut Butter Wolf in his life).

Like I said earlier in this post. Cats chops seep through in his musical approach to the Boom Bap, as well as his ear for loops.

It's a shame there's no full tracks here. But I don't think we've heard the last of some of these joints.

I will play this more than I did Alchemist last instrumental joint.

I will also add it to a playlist with Madlib's "Beat Konducta Vol. 6: Dil Withers Suite", and take a study to see who's really got something going on.

I knew the concept was "beat tape" so for the tracks that connect in that "schitt I can mix to compliment full songs (of any genre)", I'm pretty pleased.

I always thought that; however, I kinda wished more of Dilla's smooth/crisp style rubbed off on Lib as opposed to how much Lib's dirty/lo-fi style rubbed off on Dilla.. I mean, the results were still dope on the Dilla end, and I know Madlib could make smooth bangers as well.. but I'm still not hearing an album album from Madlib like "The Shining."

A pretty fair amount.. I'm a fan but not so obsessed I bought every single Medicine Show or Beat Konducta..

Take Champion Sound for instance.. love that album, but i think it illustrates my point to a tee like a Venn Diagram.

he got access to the backpacker Stones Throw super backpacker matrix mailing list, and Madlib got to spit on the hotter schitt on the album (those being Dilla joints).

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Champion Sound promo mixtape that J-Rocc did is better than the Champion Sound album.

Hands down Jay made iller beats & songs than Madlib.

Madlib's strongest full length work was "Madvillain". Before that he had hot remixes here and there (the Roots- Don't See Us remix, comes to mind).

But Madlib could NEVER pull off "Like Water For Chocolate" "Rough Draft" or "Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. take your pick".
If cats can't see that they're CRAZY.

Madlib got hella lanes...YES. He's great on a 303, good on a piece of hardware, and a Monkey at a typewriter on ALL musical instruments. Niggas just want him to be the HIP HOP Frank Zappa cause THEY aspire to have a HIP HOP Frank Zappa.

I'm not even trying to dog Otis. It's just real.

Jay has era's of HOT SCHITT!!! UNDENIABLE FIRE!!! The nigga was inspired.

Madlib has A LOT OF RECORDS. He has his label's 007 cash cow. He's released a googob of schitt, he has cratedigger libraries of schitt, he's made a handful of dope remixes, tracks, songs and a few albums.

No matter who influenced who. Madlib is not the scientist that Jay Dee was as a producer, beat maker, or an M.C.

We can go song for song, era or era. Niggas need to recognize.

Let's cut the fucking bullschitt now.

You can look at the squad of niggas that are STILL EATING off of the Jay Dee/J Dilla plate (which includes PB Wolf & Madlib) compared to the squad of niggas that are relevant out of the Stones Throw/Lootpack/Otis Jackson Jr. stable.

I've been more open to what Georgia Anne Muldrow brings to the table than Madlib in the last 3-4 years.

As a matter of fact, add G.A.M. to the list of folks I'd like to hear Karriem work with.

Felt real calculated in favor of Madlib.

when Champion Sound came out, it was generally accepted that the beats Lib rapped on (which HE PICKED HIMSELF) weren't as good as the ones Dilla rapped on (which HE PICKED HIMSELF)
the fact that you stated you think CS was a calculated move by Stone's Throw to make Libby look good when paired with Dilla, which is bullshit by the way, helps my argument-not yours

You are more of a moron than I thought.

A.) You're arguing/dismissing & SNARKING folks and Karriem's project based on your taste's & opinion vs. mine? Grow up,nigga. Like I'm gonna stop enjoying something because your internet troll ass keeps interjecting on this post with nothing but negativity.
THEN...your ace is some "generally accepted"/"the streets was feeling.." bullschitt?

You need to learn dumbass, your taste's and opinion matter for schittt outside the crackhouse you stealing wi-fi in. Your whole e-persona screams for attention.
I'mma quote Willie D. & k.i.m., "Play Wit' Ya Mama", nigga.

B.)Madlib took all the momentum from his affiliation with Dilla (who's resume looked WAAAAAY better than Otis' in 2003) and thematically parlayed it into blue chip "HIP HOP CREDIBILITY" and then fortunately worked it towards his best work (IMHO) "Madvillainy" (w/ Doom), then continued along with Stones Throw to keep eating off the Dilla table in typical Hip Hop Dead Homie fashion, once Jay got sick and was ultimately gone.

Music wise...C.S. Madlib was still behind the curve as a drum programmer. Listen to those off ass hi-hats and kicks on the majority of his beats on that album. His schitt rides top heavy with the sample and dialogue snippets all jumbled up with kicks & snares secondary as a motherfucker. Whereas Dilla...(and Karriem) clearly build their schitt from the ground up kicks,snares,hi-hats first...THEN the supplementary elements on top. Even when Dilla's schitt is intentionally off-beat it's done on purpose and ends up knocking harder, while Otis' schitt just be sounding RUSHED & cacaphonous.

C.) Nigga you sound stupid as fuck.

D.) Sit yo' stupid ass down...

E.) and shut the fuck up.

>BUT madlib murked those beats on champion sound

I'm not crazy about flowery repetitive beats like "The Official" or horn stab heavy beats like "McNasty Filth".

Nowadayz...is super lame but is it because of Madlib's trash verses or would this warm milk-ish Dilla beat better suited for an M.C. that could do something on it. I don't even care for Eminem AT ALL...but I bet he'd breathe more life in to this Frankenstein ass-track.
I'mma guess to break up the monotony the fade out bonus beat is Jay apologizing.

"Champion Sound" is cool beatwise and Jay's verses are thorough, BUT it turns into a duet with Ofra Haza Jr. and Rasta LeRoy w/ Jay's verses getting spaced out too much, then fades the fuck out?!?!?! That schitt leaves ME kind of *shrug* and it ain't Jay's fault.

Whereas it kind of ties into "The Red", which is just a tired Jay beat with more atrocious Madlib verses.

But I'm equally not crazy about schitt like "Raw Shit" (mostly due to the micro-korg farfisa chords)...the drums are sick, but seriously, I don't wanna hear Talib w/ out Mos on a Dilla beat, and that bullschitt Madlib verse is canned creamed corn.

>...maybe lib rhyming skills fucked up those beats

Tracks like "Heavy" succeed because it's a true collabo between a nice loop (which is very reminiscent of "Welcome To Detroit" era Dilla production) and a motherfucker spitting TO the track.

"The Heist" is a fantastic beat...but who wants to hear that schitt with all them gumpy ass voices crowding the track. Comparing "Heavy" and "The Heist" perfectly illustrates why this album favors Madlib...he's the most half-assed RHYMING producer that shouldn't be rhyming.

"The Mission"-great Madlib track. I'll give him props for that schitt all day. But this is one of the most slept on tracks on the record. Interested to know if anyone knows why Jay's two verses sound so different?

"React"-This track IS SICK AS FUCK...again too bad the vocal samples are better on the track than the nigga actually rhyming on the track. Guess who produced it and guess who rhymed on it? I prefer when a producer weaves/scaratches vocal samples in a track than just letting some dialogue RIIIIIDE. This schitt is a clinic if you know what the fuck you're listening to.

"Strapped"-Yawn...Bollywood string heavy Madlib joint featuring Guilty Simpson.

"Strip Club"-This schitt knocks on some Dr. Dre 2001 levels of thumpage, but again MORE QUASIMOTO SABOTAGE. This album was never gonna be equally balanced. I would've preferred Pete Rock & Jay doing an album like this. Yes, I'd rather listen to Chocolate Boy Wonda for half an album than Madlib tossing tracks like this in the toilet with vocals like that.

"The Exclusive"- Built on a break, this schitt is ill. Thank you Percee P. for giving us a rhyme to listen to after having to hear Madlib,Quasimoto and Otis' Jethro voice mumble through the last track.

"Survival Test"- sounds like Dilla speaking on this album. More Bollywood garage sale beats from Otis. Fuck this track.

"No Games" -eh- what's with this nigga and high pitched loops?

"Raw Addict"-This track is also sick as fuck, but suffers from Oxnard's finest dropping more bullschitt verses. See how this is playing out?

"Ice"- Jay spitting nice. Track is dope. Who produced it?

"Pillz"- this album is largely pretty boring for me.

sorry,guys.

>but honestly
>they sound pedestrian next to champion sound, heavy, the
>official, survival test, no games?? ice?? lol
>
>madlib murked that shit
>
>dilla had two standouts the red (original) and starz

naw...there is no way this album can be broken down the middle and critiqued fairly UNLESS you really like Madlib rhyming and Quasimoto and Jethro voices all over schitt.

This album taught me how to really appreciate T3's riding the fuck out of a beat.
It taught me how to really appreciate Baatin's multiple cadence tricky wordplay flows.
It showed me that Jay wanted a chance to rhyme his ass off over some hot schitt and not be in the driver seat 100%, and he almost got to get down like that.

But ultimately it showed me that Madlib & Stones Throw came the fuck up with this affiliation. This record doesn't have a lot of replay value to me. Reviewing it for this post is the first time I've listened to it in damn near 7 years.

I'm not hear to change your minds, I'm here defending my point.
Jay is nicer than Otis. This ain't the album to gauge it off of though.
Be for real.

common opinion (meaning an opinion outside of your narrow Dilla Dumbassery) is that Dilla put on a beat-riding clinic but Lib owned the beats
you come in here all asshurt because Dilla didn't have his best showing on that album, like it takes away from him as a producer or some shit, but if it were the other way around you'd use it as proof of your argument and wouldn't be anywhere near patient on the same stance you're taking
everybody knows Dilla chose what he rapped over, Lib chose what he rapped over-Dilla must've been fine with it since he signed the fucking contract
I think Primo had the best beat on Like Water For Chocolate but you don't hear me coming back at the Nag Champa lovers with 'but...but...but he only had one beat and it was at the last minute, it was obviously made that way to make Dilla look better'
ol' Love to Love You Baby ass nigga smh

passed out and drunk, drooling on your played out 2nd hand Bathing Ape t-shirt, and you in this post with tears and snot on your face bitching about an album you find "boring", you sound REAL familiar with all that incestual schitt.

All that Daddy Dick got your abused ass twisted, huh Gary?

Log off and get help,bitch.

Nobody except sub half-wit trolls like you have placed ANY value on any fucking thing your lame homothug persona has ever typed on this board, bitch.

"COMMON OPINION"?...
How come troll ass internet motherfuckers like you can't speak for yourselves?
Yet you wanna go back and forth forever trying to validate your ignorance with folks that can easily make a point whether supported by either fact or opinion, and still make sense?

Learn to love yourself, hoe.

Learn to learn something/anything, then contribute something other than your negative hurt rabid nigga bullschitt, i.e., shut your Daddy's dick sock, you grown ass abused child.

You couldn't win a battle of wits with me if I was dead, just like Madlib couldn't carry his half of the "concept" on an album with a cat that was physically ill.

I could give a fuck about what a brutally forced into a life of homosexuality ass bitch nigga such as yourself, in your miserable wood paneled basement rental room on a stolen acer laptop w/stolen wi-fi thinks about anything. You've prolly been waiting for the internet signal to get strong enough to send this bullschitt response FOR DAYS.

And still you're not even good at being an internet troll, you punked out chickenhawk ass, nigga.

Again, Gary, thanks for upping this post, and thanks for letting me wipe my feet on your miserable e-persona.

That the Dilla beats were underwhelming on that album. Listening the 2002 batches makes you wonder why he picked what he did. Dilla, however, chose brilliantly amongst Madlib's then-current beats. Yes, as far as Champion Sound goes, Madlib won overall. But I'll be damned if any beat that year stood up to The Red in any shape or form.

I digress.

ppl who dont like beat albums pointing out (again) that they dont like beat albums

whiners

average and mediocre producers tearing down cats w/ vastly superior skills/talent

ppl pitting two legends against each other and using one to tear the other down

again, album is dope...nice variety and very well done, a great addition to the movement ppl look at dilla and lib as the figureheads of

and forreal if some of these joints dont make u wanna spontaneously start spitting freestyles u may be beyond the point of being helped...

i think rap beat albums are kind of passe like somebody else alluded to (06-08 - i think you nailed it btw)
kind of a waste of time but for what it is some palatable beats and some interesting ideas.
but at it's very best all this is is a collection of demos aka a beat tape.
rap music always had rappers.

I'm actually tired of albums like this, nothing new is being done (funny how you niggas moved the goalpost in that regard for this and anything else related to artists you love) and that's fine, but there's not much else to it that makes me want to keep listening

I wish I could post some of my other favorites but they ain't on YouTube yet.

If you give a fuck about cats w/ skills then go peep the snippets to:

"Tom Toms" (this schitt right here sounds like some schitt Baatin, Elzhi and T3 would RIP the fuck up)

"K Riffins" (this joint got Doom, Kurupt & Snoop, or Common's name on it.)

"Alto Flute" (c'mon...lemme get a Blu & Danny Brown interlude on this)

"Double Trouble' (Bilal Oliver, Sa-Ra, Georgia, Erykah, Doom would kill this schitt)

"daOOOOOH!!" (*smoke break*)

"A7 Mix" (2005/6 Kanye would've fucked with this loop)

them joints are definite "mood changers".

And you right, Karriem needs the attention, and hopefully is receptive to the lil' bit of armchair A&R feedback that've come from fans & haters alike.

Voyager/5000 (again let me hear Blu and Danny Brown on this joint)

I'll patiently wait for Karriem's proper LP with his jazz and production skills/talents mixed. I got mad respect for dude and he's hella talented. Madlib is dope and all (and I THOROUGHLY enjoy 87.5% of Madlib's jazz output), but Karriem could make better jazz albums than him without really trying.

But then I step back and realize folks look for different things. Some insist on "songs". Some prefer an MC or singer on beats. Etc.

My copy arrived Friday and I have no complaints other than certain tracks I wish were longer and some rock longer than I would have liked. But as someone who dwells constantly in the land of beat tapes and instrumental projects, it's one of the best recent examples to me and a dope album in general. Hopefully we don't have to wait years for his next project (jazz or otherwise).

This is my major issue with this joint. Also a lot of the interspersed "dialogue" (very Madlib-esque) feels pretty random and isn't very cohesive and sometimes a little too awkward.

I would like to hear a few song length cuts that are a fusion between beat tape & straight ahead jazz composition.

I'd love to see him put out something under his own name along the lines of "The Detroit Experiment"* and say an album like "Blowout Comb" (here come the haters) in the near future, even utilizing some of the real gems off this project.

http://youtu.be/-4ZXpS7OA-M
*The Detroit Experiment •Vernors•

I think if dude focused his chops/ears into an actual fusion of "Beats & Jazz" he could easily apply the "?uestlove theory" of aligning yourself with acts similar (such as Robert Glasper) and creating an actual "movement" of cats that can actually play, know the language of music and love Hip Hop. Yeah...those acts are out there, but the true fusion of the two styles have been severely underserved for a pretty long while now.

>Hopefully we don't have to wait years for his next project
>(jazz or otherwise).

I'm sure dude is eating alright playing with Diana Krall and Paul McCartney...but yeah, I agree.
