different vibes methinks (chill-vibin' as opposed to a more hard partying)

but as stated UGK on Jay's version is legendary..and trumps that "poem" (which is hilarious)

that 94/95 death row production team where you can hear dj quik all in the percussion but not credited for anything was about as good as non-sampled based rap production got.

that opening chord on nate dogg's one more day is an incredible example of mixing/stereo imaging in 90's rap production.
the peaking level on the pizzicato strings on the bridge to "come up to my room" where you can hear them but... just barely.
the understated subtlety.
i mean there are too many small highlights to even begin naming them all.

listen to how many percussion fills this has to turn a simple loop into a song...
again, the levels that the synth strings peak at.
and who was that on the talk box? heh.
the only thing that would have made this more masterful is if there was an extended jazz guitar solo and an arrangement breakdown or something while 2pac talked shit.

the chorus should have creshendo'd to the highest db level in the song at 1:23 so that the sudden drop back to the levels on the verse would have been more striking.
they could have even added a reversed cymbal crash or a cymbal roll leading up to the 1 instead of a crash ON the 1 to put an extra exclamation point on it.

they had the dream team at death row.

dre, daz, barney rubble, carl "butch" smalls, soopafly, tony green, chris "the glove" taylor all worked on everything..... devante worked on some songs too

or at least each beat had more than one of them....

and yea, the composition, mixing, engineering, and subtleties were genius.

For me, the death row beats were basically the best non-sampled beats of all time.

its a shame that no one else has ever been able to put together a dream team like that that just gelled like that.

though its more accurate to say that these are "my favorite" non-sampled beats than "the best"..... its subjective.

...later Dre beats. The subtleties weren't there. The little sound effects in the background. The multi-layered tracks. All that shit. The beats were still really good, but almost too simplistic. I used to love trying to pick apart those Death Row beats on headphones, hearing every little nuance.

What's amazing too is that we aren't even talking about a 5 song highlight reel.

There were dozens of death row beats that fit the type of categorization we've been talking about.

And then there are songs that didn't even make the cut, for album xyz, and popped up later here or there (on a compilation or leak or w.e.), and still have that genius detail and composition to them.

Thinking back to that ATR soundrack, there were quite a few standout cuts on that joint, but Big Pimpin' wasn't one of them imo.
It was just a good track.
I remember: For Old Time's Sake, Regulate, Pour Out A Little Liquor (<--nigga hell yeah),
Part Time Lover (cuz I used to sing songs for women (c)F.Ocean), and of just about every version of
SWV's Anything was the shit
^^All being standout cuts
Big Pimpin was cool, because I played the whole album and, as has been mentioned, death row was on fire at the time.

However, when Jay's Big Pimpin dropped? I don't know not one of my friends at the time who wasn't geekin' off that.
As far as how it blew minds, I'd compare if more to Regulate or Pour Out Some Liquor from the ATR soundtrack,
with cats trying to learn the whole song and whatnot.

It's cool but I can't think of one song on Dogg Food, Doggystyle or probably even Murder Is The Case that it would be better than & there's racks of Quik joints from that era better too.

In no way, shape or form is that even on the level of the Jay & UGK joint which was instantly memorable the first time you heard it and you knew it would be a smash.

Definite classic. Unquestionable.

a rhetorical one directed at someone who felt the same as me?

'Opinion' should be pretty much implied in here.

It probably only needs to be pointed out when you're addressing someone who's telling someone else their opinion's invalid (like when you corrected Garhart earlier in this post for telling someone they hadn't listened to enough music).

capic?

Funny thing is I didn't even remember the name of the song and had to find it to even make the comparison.

I'm very tempted to say this is another instance where niggas are just rooting for the underdog, but that Nate chorus *is* dope.

I sound like a broken record up in this post. I haven't listened to Jay's Big Pimpin on purpose since 2002, I swear on my life.

I listen to Dogg Pound's like once a month and when I'm on a west coast fix, I'll listen to it multiple times a day for weeks at a time. It was me and my friend's favorite song in middle school when it came out, and we beat the fuck out of that track all thru high school. To this day, we still occasionally leave voicemails for eachother talkin about "I was just reminiscin on that ass that I rizzocked" (lyric from Daz's verse).

So...I dunno dogg. Just because u and Bomb and others don't know what it is, doesn't mean the rest of us are just in here blindly voting for the less mainstream track just to "vote for the underdog"
