I think Return of the Mac was like 2004 & that was a great LP to me and HNIC might have been 2000. Not sure I would pick Prodigy. Currently though, he is a huge let down. Mobb Deep ...period

YEP! To me Joe Budden has the total package and never reached his potential. He should at least have 1-2 GREAT LP's in the last 12 years. He has super talent and the right emotions on the mic.

In response to Reply # 0

"The Cold Vein" didn't seem like lightning in the bottle at the time. At the time it seemed like Vast was going to be a next level lyrical cat, so I expected him to drop a strong solo then eventually work with Vordul & El-P on a Cannibal Ox follow-up. Neither the strong solo or the Cannibal Ox follow-up materialized.

a little bit though, so if you were all over his initial mixtape run the new stuff might not be for you. In any case the "Ambition" album sold close to gold and he apparently just missed the Forbes hip-hop list with 2011 earnings of close to 5 million.

Does he have other business ventures? B/c I doubt he made that much on album sales, touring and guest spots alone.

Yeah. Sai became a parody of himself and Just's output dipped in quality/quantity.

Thugg and Paul Wall have remained relatively big regional acts at least.

Umm, they were pretty successful.
Their so-so movie and accompanying soundtrack even did alright. I wouldn't say they flopped. We just had expectations that they clearly didn't give a fuck about.

If not, then what the fuck do you call Stankonia and Speakerbox/The Love Below? 'Cause both of those were 2000+ and neither of them flopped.

*yes, i know it went platinum and got decent reviews. i'm speaking of the gap in quality. you could tell by that point they needed to put it on pause it not break it up altogether)

took too long to get it out/done and when it did all momentum was gone

plus it very much seemed like an album of c-sides (the b-sides were the "they could have cut this down and had another perfect album cuts from sb/lb")

folks wanna act like it never happened (hence the "oh yeah I forgot about that" reactions you often hear when mentioning it)

I'd argue he didn't have a real buzz on the streets, he just had a decent amount of press and a solid promo team.
There was no storyline, no real street cred. Just a kid with a nice flow who patterned himself after his favorite mcees.

Fat Joe been in the rap game since the early 90's and have 2-3 Great LP's (Jealous Ones Envy, Don Cartagena) and at least 5-6 big singles in his career with respect from greats like KRS and NAS. Fat Joe in Hip Hop is far from a Flop.

In response to Reply # 64

Fat Joe isn't P Diddy. Fat Joe is a rapper with a big voice who came up with some of the best rap talent of the golden era. He transformed himself from a wack rapper down with the greats into one of the leaders of NY hip hop.

Yeah, he wouldn't have gotten his platinum plaque without Pun, but he was a smarter entrepreneur than almost all of the people from that 'era' (except Jay-Z? Any others come to mind?) and was always savvy about making it big. (No pun intended)

Fat Joe is one of those rap dudes who can use ghostwriters and it works really well, because he's got a big voice and he knows how to deliver a rap. For example, Fat Joe rapped after Big L on "The Enemy" by DITC, and it's not like Joe's verse wasn't worth listening to. He killed that shit. He waskilling those raps that Pun wrote for him, and he's killed a ton of them since Pun passed away.

He had that Diamonds on my Neck song that was a little bit of a hit. BUt dude was actually a good artist. did alot of behind the scenes ghostwrighting for Puff and Dr. Dre.

Had a good flow and delivery...

Like his song with Scarface, John Legend & Kanye

I remember he was trying to put himself in the position to be the head representer of the modern Miami sound..

....and then Rick Ross came...

"BUT HE'S STILL PAID!"

yea obviously, that's not the point. The point is that after just two albums he was an equal to Jay-Z, Eminem, and Outkast. And because he couldn't grow his sound and was an outspoken asshole, the public dropped him SO fast and he never recovered in any way remotely close to what he was. I still can't really understand it.

As far as understanding it, I think it's this simple: too much of his persona was based on comparing himself to other people. When the people you're comparing yourself to end up selling more records and being more prominent than you, then that supervillian aura is gone.

What you said about his sound was spot on too. I think also worth noting is that I'm pretty sure Dr. Dre didn't executive produce any of his albums after The Massacre, so he lost that mixture of grit and polish that made albums like GRODT so successful.

when GRODT and the Massacre hit, I was pretty much sure he was going to have an MC Hammer type flame-out at some point...when you sell that much, but don't have too much that makes you stand out from the crowd... he became a CB4 rapper the minute his exposure increased.

Eventually all that posturing needs to be matched with product -- that was the reason why Kanye and Rick Ro$$ (and even Wayne, whose rapping has taken a nosedive, but at least knows what works) stuck around. There was just no depth... as soon as Dre fell out of mainstream favor, 50 was going to have to do something to keep that musical brand of his up. Dissing other rappers to gain a buzz wasn't going to happen. Cats weren't trying to hear that after the Em/Benzino affair.

The last good single he had was "I Get Money", but by then it was too late.

The formulas became stale, and the backstory became somewhat irrelevant as he's been legitimately wealthy for several years now. Also keep in mind he's been copied more than Das Efx. He doesn't have the talent to re-invent himself, as an artist he's not in the same weight class as the other guys you listed. This became evident to me the 1st time I heard "Patiently Waiting". I wasn't listening to 50's verses to see if he could hang with Em, I listened because he was the hottest thing out at the time so everything he had to say was important.

I just can't help but laugh at how a dude who talked so much gangsta shit in interviews went on to make the softest music to arguably ever exist. It figures why no one took him seriously and his album tanked. Plus, Plies 4 years later beat him at his own game, because at least Plies's music actually had some grit.

Rest In Peace, Bad News Brown
