were what I wanted to hear the most after listening to those snippets, and they did not disappoint. I'm going to need more listens to this, but it's already one of the better records I've heard all year. I love those when that really distinct Thundercat-style bass kicks in.

Being risky is one thing, but being risky at the expense of losing your damn mind is another. This album fucks with nothing Cosmogramma had to offer, much less any of his previous efforts. Hardcore devotees will swear by it, but don't believe the hype. This thing is full of songs that go nowhere and melodies (if you call them that) you will wish sounded better.

I know FlyLo has talent and I am a still a die hard fan, but this shit is slick horrible.

kinda surprised to hear "Heave(n)" on this since it was posted on his youtube 2 years ago

anyway. the man seems to be on a heavy ambient/atmospheric jazzy kick. may turn off some.

gave it a quick skim before work this afternoon and had no real opinion on it, other than it reminded me about Cosmogramma without any of the wow factor.

I think I'll like it when I give it some real listens, but I'm undecided as to how much. It's IMPRESSIVE, but there's a lot of impressive shit I'm not dying to listen to.

I like the minimalistic approach he took on this one yet he still managed to display that his chops greatly improved - Heave(n) is the type of joint I would've expected from guys like Dimlite or Dakim but he's so natural with it... also I'd really like to know how he works with the musicians that play on his albums, how he gets them to see his vision because once again everything clicks just like on LA and CMGM

On first listen, this isn't as jaw droppingly great as Cosmogramma, but still a fantastic record that sounds like it might be a grower. The first half of the album sounded a little sluggish to me, but it really picked up on the second half (basically everything after the Erykah track). Putty Boy Strut, the Erykah joint, the Nightcaller, Hunger, Phantasm (love Laura darlington) and me Yesterday//Corded are as good as anything on L.A. or Cosmogramma. Lotus has this instrumental hip-hop electro whateverthefuck on lock.

after seven listens, front to back, I have to say the first half always seems to fall flat. "All In", "Getting There", "Until The Quiet Comes", "Electric Candy Man" and for some reason "Putty Boy Strut" catch my ear the most, with "heave(n)" growing on me, but most of the songs are just meh to me. Many, like "Sultan's Request" just sort of go nowhere or don't develop into anything; or they just feel like interludes. few other songs, like "DMT Song" are cool ideas but they aren't fleshed out into anything too engaging.

I went back and listened to Cosmogramma and Los Angeles, thinking I had a biased ear because of how much time I've had with those album. But after listened to them both, especially Los Angeles, I felt like way more songs on these albums felt evolved and fully developed. They were ideas which were fully explored and all the dequence of songs were more fluid.

Still, I enjoyed "Until The Quiet Comes". The more ambient, mellow pace is right up my alley but these songs still don't grab me like anything from Cosmogramma or Los Angeles.

and should be played in its entirety. It is hard
to pick out certain tracks to just listen to on that album.

UTQC feels like you can pick out certain joints, and skip others.
Feels more cohesive than a beat tape but doesn't quite feel like
a cohesive album.

I've only sat with it for a few days.

I'll reserve final judgement to the vinyl arrives.

Gotta say though, the bright spots on this album is some of his
best work.

though the running times are relatively short.

Also, why imitate Hud Mo's 2009 style on Putty Boy Strut?

Getting There and me Yesterday//Corded are the highlights followed by Hunger and to a lesser extent, The Nightcaller.

The lack of standouts surprised me...

it's not wack or a disappointment by any means, (it's fantastic at points) but there is a moxi that it's missing. it seems like a meeting place between Cosmogramma and Thundercat's solo, which is kind of the problem. while Lotus' techniques seem to have continued to expand, like Thundercats' lp, it's a bit limp dicked and meandering at points.

we get it. he can do real pretty sublime shit... emotive... spiritual, but at this point i'd love Lotus to make a rap record with T.I., Killer Mike or some one who's lyrical but street. get out his comfort zone

honestly i'd be more interested to hear that Trap record he said he has in the files now that i've listened to this.

no, thanks.

it's possible to continue to evolve and step outside this notional comfort zone you speak of while working within the instrumental realm of electronic music. whether he can/will is another story...

"swimming" with Killer Mike was dope as shit to me. I'd like to hear more. I know he works with rappers now but its usually the sample-based loop style. His compositions are much more lush and he can really do some interesting things

>honestly i'd be more interested to hear that Trap record he
>said he has in the files now that i've listened to this.

Yup. His take on Trap just may break the monotony of the current scene.

this is better than cosmagramma which i thought while good was a bit overproduced. shit was too erratic an ambitious.

this is flylo back to being a great beatmaker which was always his appeal.

for me LA is like a hot simmering day album. this is that afterhours dead of night record. its smooth, airy and minimal.

poss AOTY. maybe maybe.

Flying Lotus Until the Quiet Comes
Words: Patric Fallon Label: Warp XLR8R Rating: 7/10

For an artist hailed worldwide as the kingpin of the so-called beat scene, Los Angeles resident Steven Ellison is surprisingly enamored with melody. He exercises a deft command of its powers, too. But the producer's work as Flying Lotus has always been beholden to the rhythms and sounds of hip-hop, elements which provided his intergalactic excursions with a vehicle familiar to its earthbound listeners, even if those beats were experimental in their own right. Los Angeles, an album rife with chunky beatwork and alien soundscapes as sprawling as its namesake, presented this sound at its most arresting and complete, but Ellison proved himself to be creatively restless on the ambitious follow-up, Cosmogramma. On that record, he expanded his scope to include more live instrumentation, high-profile vocalists, and two other major components: a predilection for proper jazz motifs and all of the ambling melodies that came with the genre. But the producer's slant toward mind-boggling drum programming continued to prevail—that is, before he started work on Until the Quiet Comes.
A lot can be gleaned about what's in store on any given Flying Lotus record from its opening track, as he treats each of them like portals to individual sonic worlds with their own unique inhabitants, geology, and weather patterns. "All In" is no different. The song starts off Until the Quiet Comes with beautifully somber chords, a simple drum pattern, and unexpectedly subtle undercurrents of Ellison's beloved galactic shimmer, sounds which glaringly imply that this is the least extraterrestrial and most melodic Flying Lotus album to date. Not only is Quiet driven largely by seemingly acoustic instrumentation, but also soulful vocal turns and breezy atmospherics. Only on a small handful of the 18 tracks does Ellison dip into his patented unquantized MPC button mashing. "Heave(n)"'s rhythmic jerks, the oppressive buzz of "Sultan's Request," and the dimension jumping "Hunger (feat. Niki Randa)" revisit the mystically intangible realm of Los Angeles, but like with most memories, they never quite capture the essence of those past gems.

Similarly, Until the Quiet Comes often comes off as a smoothed-out and watered-down Cosmogramma. Gone is the otherworldly skitter and shuffle of beats that made productions like "Computer Face//Pure Being" and "Pickled!" such a joy to return to; Ellison now seems to favor rhythms that could quite easily be performed by a novice jazz drummer. Granted, the wealth of harmonious layers—strings, keys, bass, vocals, synths, etc.—piled over those simple beats are undeniably well-arranged and gorgeous. It's impossible to deny the allure of "Getting There"'s brilliant sparkle and the poignancy of the warbling plucks in the first half of "me Yesterday//Corded." More often than not, however, Flying Lotus leaves Thundercat's breakneck bass riffs, or the guest singer's croons, or the onslaught of wandering melodies to do most of the heavy lifting on these productions, as fully evidenced on "See Thru to U" with the show-stealing Erykah Badu. Save for a soft-but-consistent thump, "Phantasm (feat. Laura Darlington)" is basically an ambient chillout track with a vocal performance fitting of a Stereolab cover band providing the main attraction. It's easy to drift into wondering exactly what happened to the instrumental hip-hop guru fans have been falling for since 1983's dense sci-fi beatscapes first appeared.

There are moments that hint towards Ellison's rhythmic genius, though. When "The Nightcaller" transforms from a buoyant free-jazz jaunt into a punch-drunk funk-blap hybrid, something about the swagger of the walking bassline and drum-machine knock makes for a deliciously nod-worthy combination we haven't heard since 2007's Reset EP. Thom Yorke's contribution to "Electric Candyman" finds the inimitable singer working with a seductive vocal quality uncommon to his own repertoire, which is then woven throughout a subdued production that also manages to be particularly manic and syncopated, even compared to a pre-Quiet FlyLo tune. These outstanding tracks are few and far between, however, and almost sound out of place when they do appear. When Ellison jumps between rehashing Cosmogramma and remembering Los Angeles, it can feel like listening to portions of two albums that have been haphazardly stitched together, which is unfortunate for an artist whose past works congeal with such a fluid continuity. The two-track suite of "Tiny Tortures" and "All the Secrets" is a good example of how Flying Lotus could blend his increasingly split musical personalities by unleashing a bit of wild drum programming, a handful of unchained melodic themes, some metaphysical soundscapes, and a few surprises, all at once.

None of which is to say that Until the Quiet Comes is a bad record, per se. It almost goes without saying that no one else in the Southern California beat scene (or any of its respective off-shoots, for that matter) could have written this music, certainly not without coming off as a dyed-in-the-wool copycat or wannabe. And only after releasing genre-defining and genre-defying LPs in tandem could a record like this sound subpar. Flying Lotus has a lot to live up to, it's true. To his credit, he delivers the goods more consistently than we should probably expect, and even the greatest auteurs have moments in their careers that are less than glowing. It would be a stretch to call Until the Quiet Comes' disjointed tracklist and middling retreads the low point of Ellison's discography, but suffice it to say that the LA cornerstone has produced far more challenging and consistent records than this. Chances are that's a gift he hasn't completely lost.

alot more head nodding going on for me on this one

I didn't even mind when that plastic sound made an appearance on sultan's request

I like it better than any EP, album, remix, and/or random youtube joint he's ever done and say this as a 1983/July Heat, from the start fan.

Off first and only listen so far. Jus' sayin', this is fresh off the first front to back extremely loud play-thru in the car. I typed these words moments after finishing the last track so take it for what it's worth lol.

I'll say this, though, since it seems to be running theme with some of ya'lls comments and a few reviews I've read: maybe I DON'T like my beat-gen electro ish THAT crazy and experimental haha. I check out some of the stuff in that year-long beat/electronic thread and so much of it I can't eff with. So maybe that's why this new gentler, kinder FlyLo hit the spot instantly for me and some of you are saying "it's cool, nothing special".

Maybe it won't have the legs of "Cosmogramma", which was roughly half joints I loved instantly and some that took some time to "get". This new album there was maybe 1 or 2 "ok....it'll makes sense eventually" moments. Time will tell.

Either way, I'm pleased w/ what FlyLo has here.

I think he just pushed the levels too high and was overdriving the speakers a little

I also saw Michael Kiwanuka's in store at Amoeba and it sounded great

so I don't think it's the sound system

I need more space

and more quiet

I just moved here from philly in July

I'm kinda over the city part

Love, Love, Love the beach culture, active lifestyle, etc...

so I don't see the point of living in LA

I have a car, so I'd rather just drive to the beach on the weekends

or whatever spot I'm checking out

than live near it

needless to say I don't know a lot of people out here

where you at

any info on shows or scenes coming up would be appreciated

I really wanted to check out that festival, but...

i think the reason i have a hard time enjoying this type of music is because i kind of want something he doesn't do - if i just took his music for what it was it's probably pretty good.
he's an excellent programmer.
he's got a great ear for mixing.
he has great timing and the ability to create something that just evolves into mush and makes you zone out.
he always inserts a ton of off the wall percussion and misc. tracks backing up whatever the "song" is doing.
but the chops? practically non-existent from what i've heard.
always simple simple phrasing and progressions.
nothing unique enough that could be re-interpreted and be recognized.
nothing that will make you go WHOA (on the basis of someone kicking the shit out of an instrument)
it's all just contained "out of control" programming and frivolous frills for 1-2 minutes per track.
i like experimental stuff but i dunno. there's no finish line with this stuff. there's no ball going through the basket.
it's just someone dribbling all crazy with their left hand while wearing tie dye and polka dots.
the "weird" factor of it might be enough to satisfy some people.
but i always feel like i'm waiting for the song to start or to get to the point.
great music if you're a 20-something year old stoner who wants to "zone out" but not for me...

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's only for 20 yr old stoners but as a fan of FlyLo I have to agree with every other point you made. For an album turning it's focus from crazy drum programming and sound effects to a more melody and instrumentation oriented album, there isn't much there to hold on to. I honestly don't think melody is his strong suit and the melodies which caught me on this album ,such as "Tiny Tortures" are mainly because Thundercat.

Thing is, most people checking for FlyLo are hip hop heads who are more attuned to percussion so a simple melody will hook them more easily. Someone who listens hip hop, as well as indie rock or jazz, with theirmore complex melodies, will be left wanting more.

But again, it's like you mentioned in the beginning. You have to take the music for what it is. FlyLo was going for a more mellow, amorphous type of album. Yet I think they're been better attempts at this type of album from other artists and even other artists on his label (imo, teebs and nosaj thing are naturally adept at making more ethereal, somber mood music).

if you dont like it, thats your opinion.
and on some days, i might agree with your point.....
but if im in the mood for some free jazz type music, but current, something chaotic, yet calming, something to chill to, ill listen a FL....
and i love beats, instrumentals, but i cant listen to the same premo / pete rock beat for more than 30 seconds without it getting repetitive......
where as with FL and similar artists, i feel you get a little bit more than your average loop......

In fact he mostly did other ppl's stuff and did a regular dj. But I'm suppose to see him a week or so, just wondering what kind of show he's going to do.

Once at the Hollywood Bowl and the other at Amoeba and it's pretty much the same set as you described. 65-70% FlyLo and the rest is other's people's songs.

His live performances have always been a semi performance/mostly DJing. I sort of wished he toured with Thundercat and a band to really bring UTQC to life but dude feels content doing his own thing. Its still fun though.

Not that he's poor
But there's a ton of acts, especially in Hip Hop that would not just benefit from a backing band and a full setup, but are actively trying to make that a reality. But touring with a big band, or even a small one adds dollars, and he can generate the same buzz and ticket prices by going solo and just putting together sick DJ sets.

dude travels around with an mpd and a macbook, getting every cent of his shows. I'd do the same thing if I was in his shoes.

I saw him at the Music Box last year with Austin Peralta and Thundercat. Dope show. He has a female drummer on stage accompanying him too. His songs really do sound better live when he have musicians playing along with him.

They each had an opportunity to shine too. Thundercat is a sick bassist.

Gets better with each listen. Lots of dense soundscapes, that are an unsung hero. Even if you think a beat is simplistic, the layers/field recordings and atmosphere that surround the track make it a incredible listening experience. The A.D.D. is in "how it sounds" moreso than how hard it was to make. AYO SON...its brilliant.

the album gets better with each listen. I most definitely like this one a whole lot more than Cosmo.

I don't understand the hate in the second half of this thread. The album is called Until The Quiet Comes, what did you expect? It's a pretty good indication that it's going to have a chiller, scaled back, minimalist approach. But I wouldn't even call these beats minimalist necessarily. It has a different texture of complexity from Cosmogramma, Los Angeles, and 1983. He still maintains his signature sound as well.

I really dig this album on first listen. I do think it's a grower, but it's growing on me quickly. I waited to get it on wax to listen, so I'm listening to it late.
