"Legend (solo or groups) without a "Classic" LP?"

For Fun.........if this was done recently...I apologize in advance..I'm just always curious to see what people think in this regard

Is there anyone personally to you that "hip hop" has decided to crown a "Legend" that just doesnt have a "Classic LP" to you? This is just for you personally. Again.......these are only personal opinions so add yours....(if you like) The thread doesn't have to be about my picks below.

My answer is #1 Eminem. I do believe he is a legend and one of the top 10 most skilled rappers of all time. Talent wise he is closer to number 5. The Marshal Mathers LP was a 4.5/5 to me and that is easily his best LP to me. He has GREAT songs but average LP's.

#2 Kool G. Rap: many will not agree with me here but I don't feel he has a classic LP. He has classic songs. To me, 4,5,6 is his best LP and it's 4.5/5 to me. He is a legend and one of the best all time but he has good to great LP's.

#3. ICE-T: A legend and has 1-2 GREAT LP's....not sure if they are
classic though.

#4. Master P is a legend but no classics. Ghetto D was his best LP. Again, 4.5/5 to me.

#The Ghetto Boys: Sorry, I like their LP's but none are a certified calssic to me like when I think of The Chronic or The Low End Theory

#5. The Jungle Brothers: Well, some don't consider them legends but some do. They have some great music and good LP's...I wouldn't call them Classic though...

Those come to mind.....I have like 10 more but will see who you all list..

peace

I'm a Kool G. Rap fan but he doesnt have a Paid In Full or Criminal Minded to me...personally and no...I'm no young buck who has not seen several eras of Hip Hop....peace

It is to me. It's the only one that doesn't sound dated now to me as well. He has some better songs on his other LP's but 4,5,6 was better or at least my personal favorite by G-Rap.

I'm on the fence as to whether I would entertain "Diplomatic Immunity Vol.1" being an impact classic. It went platinum, but honestly I don't think many people outside of their region were banging Dipest.

I'm sure "Dah Shinin' & "Enta Da Stage" are classics to the BK over 30 set, but does the rest of the world cut for those albums like that?
If you put all the BCC acts together you'd have to say they are a legendary rap clique, but if you go album for album against a lot of other well know rap cliques you'll see their output left a lot to be desired.

#1: don't care
#2: solo wise, you mean? Difficult to say
#3. ICE-T
Speak for yourself. O.G. ORIGINAL GANGSTER is a great album from start to finish. I can say the same for FREEDOM OF SPEECH but O.G. can't be touched, IMHO.
#4: never was a big fan
#5: The self-titled Def American album, for me, is great. Some people tend to prefer the more-underground GRIP IT ON THAT OTHER LEVEL, but I like how Rick Rubin "ruined" the album.
#5. DONE BY THE FORCES OF NATURE. 16 songs, from start to finish: one of my certified classics, easily up there with Tribe's and De La's first two.

Done by the forces of nature, an album it took me 15 years to appreciate, mostly because I always found their MC'ing a bit lame and too old school but I got over it and BAM! what a killer record. I play it more often than "3 feet..." actually.

As for their others, the debut is probably a classic in terms of importance (was anyone laid-back and "intellectual" like them prior to that?) but the sparse, Lo-fi production worked better for more hardcore acts IMO; I think they need a more colourful and playful sound.

"Jbeez with the remedy" is too hit-and-miss even if I dug the video version of "My jimmy weighs a ton" and they get bonus-props for sampling the Stooges "Dirt". I still haven't gotten around to hear the refused "Crazy wizdom masters"-stuff yet, maybe that one is better...

Both acts had great songs, but never an album without more filler

DeBarge - "In A Special Way" is closest (4 of 9 tracks are at least middlin - if not great)

Smokey (and I'm talking solo Smokey, Smokey w/ the Miracles you gotta *at least* give "Goin to a Go-Go") hasn't really come close since '75s Quiet Storm (though some might argue for Love Breeze in 1978)

I think the ultimate point with this post is that folks who had their careers mainly during "singles eras" are more likely to have become legendary for great songs than full sets

Sure there are a couple of songs that don't seem as great as some of the others, but that's because the best songs on this album are undeniable classics ("Time Will Reveal," "Stay With Me" etc)

Yet I find myself reluctant to call the LP as a whole a "classic." Maybe it's because I don't use that word much. Maybe because it's Debarge and like most people I'm stuck with the perpetual image of them as a group that *almost* made it. So yeah, I think of it as *almost* a classic.

The Roots is a good debate to me. They have a lot of great Albums. Classic? Not sure. They have about 3-4 albums that are 4.5/5 to me. That's just me though. Thing Fall Apart is close though. Some say it is one. I wouldnt argue it. My favorite LP by Roots is Halflife. It's a personal classic to me.

They're like, the biggest niche group in hip-hop. I think their testament is that if you're not into the roots and you like hip-hop, you still probably like them. If you're into their brand of rap at all, you probably think they're consistently a 4 star album making group. If you like them specifically, then you think they have at least a couple of classics.
Also, this is Okayplayer. It's a weird enough argument as it is, but this is a really weird place to argue it.

Apparently it means something different to most people but to me it's a piece or work that is universally accepted as Great by that particular culture. Like in Hip Hop, people know The Chronic is a classic. In Jazz, people know Kind of Blue is a classic. Those arent debates..

In response to Reply # 101

you mentioned, 'The Chronic' but 'Ready to Die' or 'Paid in Full' would also be viewed as 'classic' albums because they either captured a moment in time well or were so well-crafted that they made you pay attention to them and make you focus on them because of the skill used to make the record.

i think the problem with judging hip-hop after say '96 with that standard is that because of the music that acts were influenced by or because hip-hop had become more sophisiticated and had greater artistic credibility that there were limited areas that a 'great' hip-hop album could be that hadn't already been covered. there was less new ground to break.

it seems that after say '96, there were fewer albums that came up that seemed to sustain the ideals of classic hip-hop and also be innovative or really well-done.

because musical themes and trends in general, and hip-hop specifically seems to be more fragmented there seems to be albums that are well-done, but couldn't be considered 'classic' because they just wouldn't shift the notion of what a hip-hop album could be as far as albums from the '80's and '90's.

i guess a better question is: What qualities does a classic album have had and do have? Can an album be a classic for a period of time, and then fall out of classic status? Can an album not be classic and be considered classic later on?
