"What's the best produced hiphop albums of all times?"

Im refering to production in the hiphop sense (non vocal elements of a song). The easy choice for me was illmatic but im not that big a fan of reprasent so im going with Mecca and the soul brother cos i have a sweet tooth for jazzy hiphop. Add on....

Without a doubt my favorite produced hip-hop album from top to bottom.

Liquid Swords is right up there a well.

MOT's production was good quality but unexciting, a calcification of the sound that primo would basically take to his grave: fourth-bar breakdowns, 95 bpms and spliced-together hooks that lacked the catchiness of his earlier scratched hooks.

primo's work on hard 2 earn, daily operation, sun rises in the east and livin' proof is more exciting and better overall. i'd venture to say that most people who say otherwise probably loved MOT for what it represented as an alternative to the diddy era -- or weren't listening to primo in the early 90s.

but out of the last nine tracks (there are frigging 20 songs), only "make 'em pay" and maybe "betrayal" are memorable to me. and the hooks aren't overly strong anywhere, which was one of primo's strongest contributions to his earlier work.

...from my last post where I said that the album was clearly too long. I can't argue with anything you're saying, I only think you might be understating a little bit just how great the great production on that album is.

DO and HTE are still better, no matter what.

94. I had all of those albums (except Daily Operation) before Moment of Truth.

And no, I didn't like MOT because it was an answer to the Diddy era. I was actually rocking LAD and NWO then as well.

MOT is better to me in terms of quality. You can tell Primo put his ass in that record.

All this 'it's not new and exciting" bullshit doesn't mean anything to me because I don't listen to music for whatever is new and exciting. I rock with what I think is dope.

The sequencing, the beats, the scratches, the features...everything worked perfectly on MOT.

All of Primo's work in the mid 90s lead up to that album and then he just perfected it.

proving my point yet again, you consider anything outside of a narrow little aesthetic box to be a "fad." despite the fact that the south has dominated rap for the last decade, the idea that "flockaveli" and "TM101" are masterfully produced albums is beyond comprehension. your taste is so skewed towards one specific time/location/orthodoxy that it's totally worthless when applied to anything else. it sucks to be you.

and has both Primo's and Guru's best work over the course of an album
straight up and down, it's a masterpiece and when you consider what sort of run GangStarr was on before it dropped, you can see how that album did what most thought was impossible

you don't think it could be made bedroom producer style today with all the software and technology available? i feel like you're overstating the importance of studio time. i think time in general might be the bigger factor. people don't have the attention span and dedication to make something like that, and listeners don't expect better than what they're given on a regular basis.

that were trained at some level of engineering/production/instrumentation, you're not gonna get that kind of depth from a bedroom producer even with the technological improvements.

For a myriad of reasons, rap music will never sound like that album again.

BS were bedroom niggas too at one time and if they had that kind of advice to listen to then, we wouldn't have this sort of conversation now

Moment of Truth- Simply put, a 20 track album with not a single less than great beat. Has some of my favourite beats ever: Next Time, Above the clouds, JFK to LAX, moment of truth

Cold Vein- El-p's beats were so incredibly layered and apocalyptic and fitted the tone of the album perfectly.

2001- Every song sounds like it would be a single on anyone else's album.

Honourable mentions:
Hell Hath no Fury- The Clipse
College Dropout- Kanye- this is a personal classic for me, love every beat on this album
Only Built for Cuban linx- Raekwon
