"Creating the modern 'Soundbombing II' (the 2012 classic compilation)"
Tue Aug-14-12 12:13 PM by cidolfas

If you had complete creative control over a project that allowed you to have whoever you wanted for each song (on both the beats and the rhymes), who would you choose? What would be the overall scope of the project?

This is just something for fun. To see what *you* would do if you had unlimited resources and pull in the hip-hop world.

Try to think of it something like a 2012 updated version of 'Soundbombing II,' but feel free to go less underground/indie and more mainstream, if that's the sound you're going for. I know this was Rawkus showcasing their talents, but give yourself an unlimited range. It's just the closest thing I can think of to a compilation album like I'm talking about.

I'll be back with my list later. For mine, I'm going to try to keep it to five producers, sixteen tracks, and a total of maybe twelve MCs.

15 tracks, going for an "Underground" feel mostly, like the soundbombing albums from back in the day

producers: el-p, dj premier, blu, dela, big krit, ski beats, the roots, oddisee, apollo brown, no id, salam reemi, q tip, thom yorke, kno, whichever one of the XX produces their albums

MCs: Mos def, el-p, big krit, el-p, q-tip, black thought, blu, killer mike, nas, masta ace, scienze, oddisee, talib kweli, kendrick lamar, phonte, raekwon, elzhi, cunninlynguists, anita tijoux, andre 3k, earl sweatshirt, roc marciano, versis

if there is singing on some of the hooks(there wouldn't be many on a project like this but just in case): that girl from quadron, erykah badu, st.vincent, thom yorke, frank ocean, beach house, the xx, mayer hawthorne

this shit would be flames

despite the addition of a couple newcomers like kendrick and earl, your ensemble is just more boom-bap fetishism. mos and primo? talib and ski beats? not exactly pushing things forward here, either with rappers or producers.

it would be far more interesting to get a mix of guys who wouldn't normally work together and try to make it cohesive. action bronson and rick ross over a beat from pete rock. mr exquire and juicy j rapping about girls over a beat from harry fraud. asap rocky over le1f's production.

Oh, so my favorite style of rap is boom bap...I must be an old man trapped in the past right?

Ski beats has reinvented himself and produced DOPE shit for curren$y
Primo is still dope as shit
Talib and Mos def still have bars, the last black star tracks they released were dope

A$AP Rocky just can't rap well IMO....he only got famous because of clams casino(that dude has got BEATS)...Rick Ross really isn't that good of a rapper either

the inclusion of thom yorke, the xx, anita tijoux, coco from quadron, st. vincent, frank ocean, beach house, and even kno brings a certain contemporary "indie" angle, perhaps as a nice balance against the boom bap, and while these wouldn't be my choices, i would be interested in hearing it

because there isn't a label or collective doing that sound better right now, but the topic isn't specifically about rawkus or another installment of 'soundbombing,' i think it's just an A&R your own hip-hop comp

Soundbombing I - all in house underground boom bap as hell. I'm sure there are some fans but universally ignored.

Soundbombing II - mixed it up a bit, didn't stick to strict boom bap sounds. borderline experimental (for the time) killer rapping abilities, not too under or overground. seen by most as the best.

Soundbombing III - well it got the biggest marketing push. LOL!!

If one is going to make it work following the script that works but updating the sound would be wise.

...development and their aspirations.

>Soundbombing I - all in house underground boom bap as hell.

It was also mostly a collection of 12"s that Rawkus had already dropped or were about to drop. Kind of their initial push to underground hip-hop fans that didn't buy vinyl.

>Soundbombing II - mixed it up a bit, didn't stick to strict
>boom bap sounds. borderline experimental (for the time) killer

Again, mostly tracks from artists already on their roster, but mostly never heard before material (aside from "Crosstown Beef"), and more "accessible" than tracks on the first comp.

>Soundbombing III - well it got the biggest marketing push.
>LOL!!

Rawkus' clumsy push to gain "mainstream" appeal. Look! We've got Missy! And Sryes P! And Method Man! We're a "real" label now! Buy it!

^^^^^underrated reply^^^^^

it's also something I could fully support. 'post boom bap' does not necessarily connote better, sorry. but something with oddisee, apollo brown, Oh No, and the like on the beats would be fucking awesome. Soundbombing II IS boom bap, and those wanting some kind of update to not be in that general direction are kinda misguided. If you asked blue note to 'update' some classic records in their catalog would you expect a FULL departure from what made the records classic in the first place? This reactionary anti-boom bap shit is not a good look, at all. NONE of these new motherfuckers are gonna be around in 5 years and the reason is obvious. as much as you think us old folks whine and shit about music not being good as it once was, it's fucking TRUE. these new niggas pop up and fall the fuck back after a 3 year run, tops, if that.

soundbombing II is dope as fuck, as were the artists on there for the most part. in fact, more than 12 some odd years AFTER the fact people STILL talk about a lot of the people that were on that album-mos, el-p, kweli, monch, dem BCC niggas(tek and steele I think?), and there's prolly more i'm forgetting. so say you go out and get a mac miller or a$ap whoever the fuck, who from this current crop of emcees do you see still being in ANY conversation ten years from now? how bout none, doggie.

umm, i was thinking more along the lines of artists that people still talk about. the only person on that list of omissions that qualifies is RA the Rugged Man. Maybe ss and skillz. nice googling tho.

i'll stop getting 'emotional' when you stop being dead ass wrong. If you really think people gonna be talking about a$ap rocky 10+ years down the road like a lot of the kwelis, el-ps, etc, then your trying way too fucking hard to legitimize music that anybody with a brain can tell is inferior. You really think that dude belongs in the conversation in terms of people out today who are gonna have that type of longevity? nigga, Nelly and Ja-Rule sold a bajillion records and their run was only 6 years, MAYBE. Wiz Khalifa had a similar buzz as a$ap and he's beginning to become milk carton status, people would rather talk about his suspect ass cd cover instead of his new music.

fuck it it, why don't you tell me why "i'm failing to see how ASAP rocky has less longevity than dudes who even really made it."

if anything, you're the one getting emotional, making declarations on shit that isn't even in the same universe as the people on sounbombing II that are still part of the conversation. A$ap isn't that caliber of artist.

you good?

my point was that ASAP rocky doesn't need a ten-year career to be a valuable part of a series that has included a bunch of relative unknowns. stop letting your silly separatist opinions get in the way of being rational.

i'm just saying, there are waaaay more compelling options than trotting out a group of retreads who would make something sonically similar to an underground LP from the late 90s.

kool keith and lil b over clams casino
waka, MOP and fat trel over just blaze

in particular Lil B and Keith over Clams production. interesting thing is i was just building with a friend of mine about how there is a creative link between B and Keith. IMO Keith was B before the internet with better rapping ability

but whateva whateva, these ideas still sounds good to me

a conversation about the aesthetic direction of soundbombing II vs. what it would be in 2012 is a valid part of the dialogue. nowhere in THAT exchange did anybody put down homeboy's selections. Get off your high horse and KIM.

i liked Kosa's ideas and wanted to comment, but i knew immediately i wouldn't have my own version to offer for a couple reasons. in general, i used to love thinking up collaborations and, yes, even what kind of compilation album i would put together, and at one point i was even interested in a career as a music supervisor in movies just because i felt i would be good at it. i've long put these things to the side just as unproductive or unrealistic (sorry, not trying to be gloomy here, just being honest). two, as much as i still listen to and love hip-hop, right now i'm not sure i am well-versed or care enough about current rappers and producers to participate in this, which is why i'd rather read and respond.

The Beat Junkies actually mixed those songs.. WELL.. With no bullshit screaming and voicestamps all over.

Although it's considered compilation, SB2 was more of a mixtape than what is officially titled a "mix tape" these days..

And YES.. it needs to be boom bap with some experimental soul/funk and scratching in there.. That's the whole fucking point.

FOH with some Juicy J/Rawse bull.. there are other outlets for that.

Kosa's post was on point.

i tend to agree. that's the in sound right now, and what made SB2 a cool comp was that it was an alternative to the jiggy era. everywhere you look online you can find the same rappers and producers, and it's totally cool if you like that music, but it doesn't need to appear on a prestigious comp for hip-hop heads. i would sooner hear juicy j and dj paul reconnect and cook up a classic three 6 mafia banger productionwise for a hungry young cat to rhyme over than hear juice say his catch phrases over the latest flavor of the month fruity loops producer.
