"Why isn't OC mentioned amongst the greats??"

Been bumping Trophies for a minute now and it made me realize just how dope of an MC he is. I've been a fan since Times Up. He's always been one of the dopest MCs IMO. I think he has one of the flows in hip hop period.

Where does he stand with you?

People loved him initially for his earnestness, but he discarded that blue collar hip-hop persona in hopes of commercial success. He's not particularly cool, personable or witty, so his career stalled out completely. Good to see he's back on track, but he's not equipped to go toe to toe with the best. At his best he's pretty good, but never great.

Do you mean his style, or his actual level of rhyming ability? There are rappers who have had some commercial success that have a higher level of rhyming ability than him. Guys like Nas, Ghostface, Monch, Beanie Sigel, Mos Def & Raekwon come to mind. Rhyme for rhyme AZ's probably better as well, even though he too has his issues with engaging the listeners.
What makes someone "a rapper's rapper" in the first place? I think part of it goes back to my answer, which is a lack of charisma. Another thing that makes you a "rapper's rapper" is a lack of an interesting backstory, and/or marketable persona.

I will admit that O.C. is nice on the mic but I think the problem with him is that over the years he's not been at the top of his rhyme game so he get overlooked quite a lot.

His first two albums are definitely great albums but after that he started to go downhill but lyrically nice just not as impressive as before; but when it came to guest spots and doing songs with other DITC members he was top notch (but I also feel the same way about Fat Joe when it came to doing songs within the DITC camp).

His new album is banging, but I doubt any listeners that doesn't know O.C.'s past track record is going to call him "one of the great emcees" these days.

He's VERY good with an underrated discography and impressive longevity, but he's in that 2nd-tier imo when you talk about top MC's.

It's like I keep saying, EVERYbody can't be "one of the best of all time" or else it cheapens the distinction.

...there is no doubt duke is nice, but can't put him up there with the greats. I see his career almost like that of Masta Ace, though not quit at Ace's level...consistent, and you gotta respect how long OC has been in the game...

We should let the man live.

He's had a major comeback and achieved a renaissance that the aforementioned greats from his era weren't able to achieve (Rakim included).
