"'Aaliyah's Family Does Not Condone Potential Posthumous Release' "
Thu Aug-09-12 08:43 AM by G_The_SP

http://pitchfork.com/news/47438-aaliyahs-family-does-not-condone-potential-posthumous-release/

'Aaliyah's family does condone a posthumous release of the late singer's unfinished demos, The Guardian reports (via NME). Just following the recently-shared Drake track, "Enough Said"-- in which he raps over an unfinished Aaliyah demo-- Aaliyah's brother Rashad Haughton made a statement on the official Aaliyah Facebook page: "There is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family."

But in an interview after his OVO Fest in Toronto (via Nah Right), Drake claims that he and his right-hand man Noah "40" Shebib got the blessing of Aaliyah's family and collaborators. "The people around her-- everybody from her family to her old management and label-- were just like, 'If there's anybody out who can do it right now,' it's me and 40," he said. He also mentioned that he's working on an album with "13, 14 Aaliyah songs" and hopes to have people "essential in her career" involved.

"Enough Said" was released via Blackground Records, the label run by Aaliyah's uncle Barry Hankerson, which released her material. MissInfo reports that although most of the album will be produced by 40, Timbaland is set to work on two tracks.'

The Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/aug/08/aaliyah-family-posthumous-album

'Aaliyah's family have denied any involvement in her new posthumous album, which is being spearheaded by Drake. "There is no official album being released and supported by the Haughton family," announced the late singer's brother, Rashad Haughton.

The family's announcement follows Sunday's debut of Enough Said, a "duet" between Aaliyah and Drake that was produced bythe rapper's longtime collaborator, Noah "40" Shebib. The song is built on one of Aaliyah's previously unreleased vocal tracks, with a verse by Drake, in which the rapper brags about his watch, expresses his ennui, and appears to diss Chris Brown.

Many fans have taken exception to Enough Said, accusing Drake of tastelessness. Before she died in 2001, Aaliyah was most famous for her work with Missy Elliott and Timbaland, on 1996's One in a Million. But as of Tuesday, neither artist had been approached by Drake. "I don't know what's going on," Timbaland told Power 105. "The proper way to do would be for me, and Missy to be all on the record."

Several big names joined the chorus: "That new aaliyah/drake beat sounds like my first beat in reason," complained Flying Lotus. "I think Timbaland needs to choke someone out … When I'm dead, don't mess with my music. Don't be having whoever 'finish' my demos n shit. fuck all that."

Since then, Drake has apparently contacted Timbaland; the hip-hop veteran will now reportedly produce two songs on the Aaliyah LP, with Shebib helming most of the rest. Despite bringing Timbaland into the fold, Drake has not mended fences with Aaliyah's family. "Do you want a Aaliyah album?" they wrote on Facebook. "If so, who should executive produce it or be featured on it? The Haughton family would love to hear what her FANS have to say."

For now, Drake does not appear to need the Haughtons' support. Enough Said is co-released by the rapper's own label, October's Very Own, and Blackground, the record company founded by Aaliyah's uncle, Barry Hankerson. Hankerson, who was also Aaliyah's manager, issued all of her previous records and is likely to own the rights to her unreleased recordings.'

I was on Twitter when FlyLo tweeted that and laughed my ass off. Drake's obsession with Aaliyah is not normal, it's on some Norman Bates shit. He needs professional help.

Admittedly, my original music business dream was to become what Danja ended up being, and be Timbo's right hand man helping produce Aaliyah albums. But, I'm not on full bold creep with multiple tats and taking it upon myself to create a project that no one is really checking for. Who besides him & J. Cole was wanting a new Aaliyah album anyway? I haven't enjoyed much of her 2 posthumous albums.

Enough Said isn't as bad as it is creepy and unnecessary.

It sounds like Aaliyah's uncle was the one who reached out, and perhaps he told them he had the blessing of the family? In the quote you pasted, he said the old management and label, which is basically Blackground, who are on board with this.

Whether people like his music or not, Drake seems like a pretty level headed guy and I don't think he'd do this without thinking her people were okay with it.

I don't think he seems level-headed at all.

Talking about, he would deem himself the first one to successfully sing and rap.

Talking about he invented hashtag rap.

Now this, like "we're the only ones out who could do it".

He either thinks really highly of himself, or he's insecure and needs to make himself seem more important by exaggerating his accomplishments constantly.

Everything I saw about this saw him credit Big Sean for this trend, but ok.

>Now this, like "we're the only ones out who could do it".

Where did he say that? Didn't he say that Aaliyah's people told him this in the very quote you referenced?

>>Talking about he invented hashtag rap.

>Everything I saw about this saw him credit Big Sean for this
>trend, but ok.

Alright, he may have (wrongly) given Sean credit for inventing it, but he also made sure to talk about how he did it best and dissed other rappers for doing it like it's up to him who can use it, even though that shit's really been around before anyone knew who he was. Exaggerating his own importance.

Yeah, and I doubt "everybody around her" told him that. I think he's exaggerating again.

All of them. Unless it's a situation like "The Shining," when HE asked Karriem Riggins to finish the album for him, they shouldn't happen.

I just wrote an opinion piece on it, if anyone wants to check it out www.mlive.com/music/index.ssf/2012/08/opinion_aaliyah_drake_song_con.html

But these joints just need to stop. All of them. These people who made meticulous, passionate records while they were alive are being degraded into shells of their former selves just so these labels can get a quick buck.

Literally makes me sick.

I'd rather have a wack posthumous album that the artist signed off on, than a dope one that wasn't how the artist intended to make it. When it's an after-death situation, I really hate the idea of an artist's pride and joy being tampered with without their approval - even if it turns out sounding good to my ears.

In response to Reply # 26

okay then.

lol

anyway, i generally don't get down w/posthumous releases. i can deal if they're like that Makaveli album - where the bulk was recorded before the death and there's minimal retouching done on the album. i tend to turn my nose up at posthumous works like the string of Pac albums that followed that one. or the Michael album released after MJ died. where outsiders came in and tinkered w/demos and leftovers.

the difference is the posthumous album like Makaveli actually has the dead act's stamp on it. it has the dead act's vision. the other type of album has more of the stamp and vision of the deceased's estate and/or the outside helpers. that's usually not something i'm interested in.

fuck you.

Outside of the cuts from the "Ebonics" 12", Flamboyant and some of the DITC-related stuff and the "freestyle", there wasn't much of worth on that record. Also, it sounded incoherent. The debut is not exactly a masterpiece but the production is far better than often given credit for (DITC were great in that era), Big L-while one-dimensional-rips it with his style and it's a top 10-15 Hip-Hop album from 95 which makes it perfectly enjoyable to me. It's one of those records that's simultaneously over- and underrated to me...

Premier bodied the beat, and that's one of my favorite Joe verses ever.

Under their shared collective moniker they never really lived up to their true potential but their influence/individual-talent was pervasive all over the genre during their heyday.

and that record's been given far more credit than it deserves as has Big L in retrospect.

I seriously would be here all day with '95 releases better than that album, it got him dropped & forgotten for a reason.

You could start getting to Da Youngstaz, Doe or Die, Mind of Mystikal or Double or Nothing being better than it before you start getting into the real heavy-hitters like The Infamous, Return To 36, Cuban Linx, Dah Shinin, etc.

Arguable Top 50.

The first one-no way! But no, it would not make a top ten, that was an exaggeration. However, I'm fairly sure it would be top 15 to me. Just in the context of DITC, it was better than Lord Finesses "the Awakening" and only SLIGHTLY worse than Show&AG's "Goodfellas" and since I love those dudes, i'm fairly sure that top 15 sounds about correct to me

EDI ouble or nothing might be a little better; great record IMO

Coast II Coast
Safe + Sound
Dogg Food
Goodfellas
In A Major Way
Labcabincalifornia
Livin Proof
IV Life
Sittin On Chrome
4,5,6
Me Against The World
2000

That's before getting into those last-gasp 2nd/3rd albums by big early 90s groups like Das-EFX, Black Sheep, Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature, and Onyx who seemed to all put out albums in '95 that could be argued as superior, some of the 'debateable' second/third tier albums stuff I'd mentioned before (Double Or Nothing, No Mercy), some of the backpack/esoteric stuff (Aceyalone) or regional (Mystikal) stuff that I wasn't listening to then but went thru listening periods with later.

Lifestylez was a no-frills New York City solo MC hip-hop record & due to nostalgia that in and of itself holds some level of charm but it's fairly unremarkable on its own merits even though I consider myself a fan of both L & DITC.

But yeah, it would make my Top 50 Rap Albums from that year, that part was an exagerration on my end. peace.

Eric Dolphy-Out to lunch! (this one was finished for release before he died and supposed to be released but still, he died before it came out)

Jimi Hendrix-Rainbow Bridge, MAYBE Cry of love as well. "First rays of the new rising sun" is essentially a comp of those

Just to give this whole situation perspective:

1.) Aaliyah's uncle owns the label. If the label is officially behind this, Drake is not at fault here.

2.) The Hankerson/Haughton family has fought in court over matters surrounding Aaliyah's death. We don't really know whether the FULL family is really behind this, so that renders that whole argument of whether it's right or wrong to do this invalid and useless.

Both points aside, the song sucks anyway.

-This will introduce her to a new group of people/new fans for her.
-May get her albums reissued with extra material.
I love the new track but I wish Drake used better lyrics in his rap.

62. "Movie About Aaliyah's Life"
In response to Reply # 0

I wish Aaliyah's family would do more to maintain her legacy and keep her relevant. If there is a lot of unreleased music enough for 2 or 3 albums, isn't it past time to release this material to the public? There has been a film about Aaliyah's life in the works for years, but the family doesn't seem to approve of that either. I don't understand this at all. When you look at Amy Winehouse's family, they seem to be doing a lot more to keep her relevant, by continuing to release her music with even more albums in the future of unreleased Winehouse songs. A whole new generation would discover Aaliyah with this new album and if they ever allow the movie about her to be made.
