TD was good cause it was short concise and to the point...and it had more people coming in to break up Ross who can get sorta blend in when you hear him for so long...That's why I think he works best when he comes in with a 16.

like I know this 16 track ain't 8 minutes long lol..

or is it that endless posse cut with MMG cats plus Kendrick?

Either one is nowhere near good enough to justify the length.

not like Teflon Don
im a fan of Ross though
personally i think he strayed too
far into that Lex Luger trap sound lane
too much on that last mixtape and from the
snippets I heard there was like a 4 sound trap opus
on here.

Im going to listen with open ears though
dude can pick beats

There's no medium on this. His great songs are realy great and his
trap tracks are reall bad. You'll be skipping a few in the middle
but his strong tracks are tough

he tried to do too much, but it's still pretty dope in sections...the end of the album is way to r&bey, and the 'trap' section should have been distributed throughout the rest of the album

andre 3000, tho...

Without that, this might be an album of the year candidate.

That beat at the end of Maybach Music IV should've been its own song!

Amsterdam is a beautiful ass track.

He kept the trap joints to a minimum. I never expect to be able to listen to a Rawse album front to back so no disappointments here.

Amd they were among his biggest successes off that last album, so what you expect?

I agree that I like the J.L. production stuff, but even those (often) over-produced orchestral beats can get a little played out after a while.

and Leaf was one of the greatest songs of 2011, though that was a Main Attrakionz track first

I also think Watch the Throne was better, and that Jay-Z turned in one of the year's better mic performances strictly on lyrics and presence

That said, right today I would gladly listen to LiveLoveASAP over Watch the Throne. It's more entertaining even if it's got more noticeable flaws.

I don't follow leaks and all of that so the only other project I've heard from Rocky is Deep Purple and his verses with ScHoolboy Q, Juicy J and Smoke DZA. All were very entertaining. I'm not sure what he's supposed to be poor at, that's for sure.

i'm a ross fan too.

3 Kingz(s?) and Triple Beam Dreams are the best songs.

ross has become TOO good at picking beats. he's trying to let the beat do all the work. he's turning into the coke rap Guru...meaning his shit is just monotone now.

and lord or lord, but WHAT has happened to mixing these days. the mix is all over the place. first there's no bottom then there's too much...and the sample mixes are sloppy in a lot of spots too. mixing is defnitely a lost art and GFID proves it.

More in line with Deeper Than Rap than Teflon Don to me though, in the sense that it's strong from front to pack with only a few missteps, but no real GREAT song.

Two years later, I still play "Free Mason", "Tears of Joy" and "Aston Martin Music" on the regular. I don't see anything like that here.

A good @@@@ joint tho.

but anyone that fronts on how immaculate his fucking ear is is lying to themselves and the populace as a whole.

The man don't say shit...but neither did Too Short.

But his cadence is always in the pocket and his ear for beats puts him in his own league.

I'll listen when i get a chance to give a more in depth review.

I'm working on a version with the best stuff from GFID, Vol 2 and Rich Forever. And yes...I love my bitches and 3 Kings go together well as hell.

And I might put the Luger stuff that makes the cut at the end so that it doesn't kill the flow of smooth excellence that is possible with some of these records. I get why he does those records, but it would be great if he placed them better. Its clear to me that he's trying to hide those songs while still putting them on the album.

Its almost like he was going for a 2-disc joint but said 'eff it' at some point and released the mixtape and Volume 2 just to get some of the records out that he liked.

For instance...Keys to the Crib is one of my favorite Ross records of the last year and its on a mixtape. And MMG Untouchable doesn't hurt my feelings either even though its just one verse.

Overall, Rawse rapped better than before somehow...and the production is, for the most part, excellence. He's still missing the immediacy on most of these songs that he'd need to have an over the top type of hit, but I'm fine with that. He's as popular as he can be (I think) and he keeps cranking out above average music which is far more than I thought he was capable of when I heard Hustlin'.

Top notch production as usual.

Except for that three-track Luger-esque run starting from Hold Me Back... terrible.

Drake, as usual, sounds like a bitch on that Diced Pineapples hook.

But other than that, great success.

that what holds down this album Ross tried to carry it too much himself..I mean when folks are cutting you off a song completey to make it an Andre solo something is wrong.

HE can't hold down an album like jeezy does.

>yep its out there..
>
>This should be his C3 the album that push him to SuperStar
>Status or he will just stay and that tier right under Kanye,
>Jay, Wayne, and Drake

The man rapped on this album. He got his anthems in. And he went into this with the goal of carrying the record while still getting MMG folks in there as guests.

The main event though? The smoothness! The cool as hell songs are, for the most part, great. Amsterdam for instance...its like Cigars 2..its the type of stuff I would've wanted Wallace to be doing if he was still here. Or the type of songs I would've wanted from The Commission if that would've happened. The hooting and hollering Rawse trap 'anthems' are certainly more of the same, but they are catchy, funny (because he's aiming to take simple lines and make them profound-sounding via excellent delivery and placement), and effective for their causes. Anytime someone hates on me, I'm gonna think of top of the lungs Rawse yelling out "these niggas won't hold me back...noooooo!". Haha.

Of course, there's a couple of missteps and I'm afraid he'll never 'hit' with the masses with the stuff he's doing. At least not on purpose. He's a damn good 90s rapper in a 2012 world. He's doing all of the stuff good 90s rappers would've done if given a chance to go back and use a group like Justice League to create lush interludes and transitions between verses or songs. I love that stuff. Puff and them were dabbling in that on LAD, then a few folks tried to do it on the cheap and then it kinda stopped for a while.

But overall..this is a damn good piece of rap music to me. I love the general thread that holds the album together and how it has been being set up for a good while. Its not an impossible concept to carry, but at least he put forth the effort to do it. I love that he does the whole Tupac thing of talking it out after a verse or a song. I love that he understands the concept of trying to improve on what he's already done. I love that he 'gets it'. 'It' in this case is find sounds that work with what you do and then do the hell out of it, stretch it out when needed, condense it to get points across, etc. Based on that, he really does get it and I'll support anything he drops because of it...at least until it becomes clear that he doesn't get it.

The thing about nostalgia...mistakes and missteps of the past artists are eventually forgiven or at least glossed over in favor of the better moments, but the scars are regularly (and maybe even subconsciously) imposed onto the acts that come after. This is the opening statement to my comparison of Rawse to cats from the mid-90s who were held in high regard..Nas, Pac, and BIG for instance...some other time though cuz I'm sure folks don't wanna hear those comparisons. Nostalgia is a mutha ya'll. Its like the Super Mario Brothers star powerup..only so much is gonna stop it. And folks don't respect where the 'high brow' people's bar is now compared to where it was in the 90s in terms of volume and quality...

Something else I miss about back in the mid-90s...as a rapper, you could curl up in a corner for 2 years and then drop something. It could even be a double CD..and yep...it would be bloated with some missteps, but still..you could drop that shit...and folks would grab it, be glad to have it, and then...get this, folks would LISTEN TO YOUR SHIT. Front to back! Multiple times! Digesting, respecting, and reflecting on your record. The verses, the production, the production credits, the samples, the ill lines, the guests, the everything.

Now..with music so easy to get truthfully and untruthfully, cats 'listen' to your shit from wack computer speakers in the other room while they are on the phone, randomly cleaning up and/or cutting their hair. Or they skim your shit while they are playing Madden or Tekken. Or they let somebody else tell them it ain't good and then they don't even listen to it to find out for themselves. Because hey...there's always something else to listen to other than your shit.

He's released a lot of music this year. Between GFID, Rich Forever, and Self-Made Volume 2, I have already put together a 2-disc Rawse album that is nice as all get out. The second disc is squirrelly, but it goes. And the first disc is like Super (Duper) Deeper than Rap.

seems like the beat selection made room for his lyrics and word play to stand out more this time around
there were a few songs where he even turned the beat down to background music levels and spit
i've only listened one complete time (some songs i've had on repeat though)
but i think the more i listen to all of the songs in depthly (sp) the more *deep* this album will seem

btw i agree with you on the biggie point
cept i'll go a step further and say i think biggie would have become what ross is now if he had stayed alive and moved away from puffy (if possible)
with better lyrics and more pedigree, sure
but yea the swag, the subject matter, the lil bits of unique style injected into every song....

I know youre not being literal but I'd say he's pretty much the definition of a 2012 rapper. Rapping about shit he never really did. The whole trap music section of the album. I'm not seeing the 90s rapper comparison. Kanye to me is a 90s rapper in a 2012 world. As is Pusha.

Well..if you ask me, lying/exaggerating makes him a *insert any year* rapper in a 2012 world. For instance, OKP as a group has long ago decided/agreed that a large % of the Rae/Ghost stuff is hilariously false/fabricated..I mean..most of these cats are least exaggerating...cats who sold drugs, did some crimes, spent time in a group/gang/whatever, or were at least in proximity to illegal shenanigans of some kind for a few months and rap about it on and on like that was their life for damn near their whole life aren't nearly scarce or surprising to me nowadays. And I do believe cats are basically paying societal memberships for protection.

And I'm not talking about the sound of the album. And of course that anthem Lugerish stuff is as right now as can be.

I'm looking underneath the music to what appears to be his goals...having a 'label' of cleaned up/repackaged misfits who are seeking revenge on an industry that sold them short that can be used to branch off into many different projects, having the goal of making good albums with songs/concepts that blend into each other, doing the 'dream' collabs with cats HE'S a fan of instead of just snatching up the hot act and paying for a hit, any kind of focus on lyrics..even on the more 'simple' songs he's trying to create quasi-profound slogans, t-shirt material, and/or mantras...the same thing Pac did all the time. Its all the stuff that ambitious 95 and on rappers were enamored with accomplishing. RZA, Master P, Pac, Snoop once he got off Death Row and No Limit, etc, etc.

Now...cats are trying to give away music until a label bids high enough for their services. If they have a little crew, they may tour, eventually release label albums that bend but don't break their previous material's 'formula' and some videos, and then go from there. Kinda like the Curren$y template. Or better yet...Wiz's template.

I think his use of the mixtape format makes him much more a star today. In terms of sheer personality though, I think he does hearken back to an earlier era. He's bigger than life in a way not alot of today's current rappers are.

Rawse's mixtapes are basically dry runs for his new stuff mixed with bsides from his past albums. Its certainly true that he presents free music like an event better than most folks do..and that's great if you ask me..especially when he delivers.

To keep on with the Rawse praise...I honestly think he's one of the few cats who could...with a straight face...try to make a double CD. The problem is, he's blown his load now with Rich Forever, Self Made 2, and GFID. And it just doesn't make sense to do a double in this climate. Money-wise, its gotta be almost a guaranteed loss unless you are putting up Nelly 2002 numbers. And in terms of folks actually listening to your stuff, splitting up songs across other folks' albums (Rawse is around), your own label comp (see Self Mades), a super mixtape (Ashes to Ashes, Rich Forever, the one where he looked like a black bird on the cover before Teflon Don), etc. gives those songs a better chance of actually being heard. Getting cats to listen to 15 songs on one release has to feel damn near impossible now. Its crazy.

Side note: I still don't believe Watch the Throne didn't leak. EVERYONE should steal that strategy/concept..especially when they think they have a really nice record on their hands. Nas and Rawse both had to feel that way this year...

I do agree that Rawse appears to have an aura of some kind. I used to laugh my ass off when he was hollering 'Bawse' on everything. Then he just kinda went from the dude who made Hustlin' and Push It to being a big deal after Deeper than Rap hit folks in a weird place/caught people off guard. I made a funny face when I heard Maybach Music (because of Jay)...like 'hmmm...maybe this Bawse Rawse cat is onto something...then I heard Here I am and was like...nahhh! Dude had to know he was wrong...'.

Then he slapped me upside the head with them cool ass Justice League songs on Deeper than Rap. Folks keep trying to copy his anthem songs to make street hits...I wish more folks tried to steal the cool album cut stuff. I see Justice League getting used more, but I wish THOSE songs would be the hits.

Rawse also had weird cosigns/guest that didn't really make immediate sense to me when they happened. Jay on Maybach Music...Def Jam stuff? Kanye...Def Jam again? Puffy? WTH? Oh...ghostwriting discounts...then it was Rae and Cee-Lo. And Styles P randomly...ohh...Puffy...now its Nas (Def Jam) and Dre 3k (did Benjamin get kidnapped at a strip club and forced to quasi join MMG and YMCMB..he's all over that stuff?) doing songs? *Grunt*

plus, since we're in a Rick Ross thread. It's funny how Rick Ross's trap beats really originated with Dipset. Dipset had a million beats like that. However, its obvious those drum/horn heavy simplistic horrorcore beats are more commercially viable with Rick Ross's vocal approach.

Listened to the whole thing via Spotify while hiking yesterday.

The narrative is: This is pimp is a HERO.
The narrative I prefer is:This pimp is an anti-hero.

I don't find the music complementing.
I don't find a good sense of humor.
I don't understand why it sounds like a mixtape with the "maybach music" tag all over it.
I don't think his story of "I sold dope - and now I'm a big shot" to be complementing - kind of sad actually.

It's not for me.

Or did I really miss something?

WHAT?!?! WHAT?!?!

This reggin just Eminemed Ross lmao

Fuck that guitar solo. . . fuck that guitar solo.

The hook is straight, and the verse, he finally dropped his Take Care, Channel Orange flow.

Summer '88, or was it '89
Or was it winter-time, ah, nevermind
I'm in my room, booming
Drawin' LL Cool J album covers with Crayolas on construction paper
I'm trying to fuck my neighbor, I'm tryna hook my waves up
I'm tryna pull my grades up, to get them saddle lace ups
Before lil' Marc was Jacob, before them girls wore makeup
Before my voice would break up, before we'd tour them shake clubs
Before my mama wake up, before my crumbs would cake up
Before they tell me they love me and we'll never break up
Before the time she makes love to someone that I thought was my homeboy
But boy, was I wrong, now
I don't budge, don't want much, just a roof and a porch
And a Porsche, and a horse and unfortunately
But of course an assortment of torches that scorches the skin, when they enter
Intruders, whose tutors did a lousy job
How's he God if he lets Lucifer let loose on us?
That noose on us won't loosen up, but loose enough to juice us up
Make us think we do so much and do it big
Like they don't let us win, I can't pretend
But I do admit, it feel good when the hood pseudo-celebrate
Hence, why every time we dine we eat until our belly aches
Then go grab the finest wine and drink it
Like we know which grape and which region it came from
As if we can name 'em, hint hint, it ain't, um, Welch's
Hell just fell three thousand more degrees cooler
Ya'll can't measure my worth
But when you try, you'll need a ruler made by all the Greek gods
Because the odds have always been stacked against me when back's against the wall
I feel right at home, y'all sitting right at home
All Kelly green with envy while I'm jelly beans descending
Into the palm of a child, looks up at mama and smile
With such a devilish grin, like "where the hell have you been"
She yelling that sellings a sin, well so is telling young men
That selling is a sin, if you dont offer new ways to win
A dolphin gon shake his fin, regardless if he gets in
Or out of water, most important thing for him is to swim
And Flipper didnt hold his nose, so why shall I hold my tongue?
(I miss the days of old when one could hold his gal on his arm)
And I set off these alarms, when cameras snap snap snap snap
Return fire, pa-pa-pa, pa, pa-pa, pa, pa, pa
Theyll learn why, mere privacy, so essential
They won't make no laws, I break their laws til they see out our window
I take the fall to make them all treat human kind more gentle
Forsake them all, I hate them all, dont like em, dont pretend to
Yea something tells me we aint in Kansas anymore
All that shit that used to be cool aint cool anymore
All the women we were pursuing, now they want more
And they deserve it all, dont settle for what aint yours

PEACE LOVE and MONEY

In response to Reply # 0

Being that Ross has been the leading catalyst in that sound the past few years, that section of the album sounds real uninspired, lazy and just thrown in there..coulda saved those joints for a mixtape or internet leak or something...

Those slots coulda been used for more of the style that the rest of the album has, real smooth and soulful but large and cinematic at the same time..

I think sales, buzz and relevancy wise this album is gonna do what it's gonna do regardless of the uninspired trap section..(I don't think it will make Ross larger than he already is..more so maintain his current run for a little bit longer..),

but I feel if he didn't lazily toss the trap section in there like he did he would have had a real critical acclaim home run in his catalog..

the production is fire as hell about half the time but I just don't give a damn about what Ross is saying, which is a shame since I thought he did real good on Teflon Don. But here it's all about smelling pussy and tickets to the Heat game over and over; I don't really care.

And my Sennheisers are better than Beats by Dre, so you can save your shilling Doc.

------

It's been pretty amazing to see Rick Ross grow from stereotype to monolith over the past three years. Rap is generally a genre with little favor for rappers nearly a decade removed from their debut albums, which makes' Ross constant growth as an artist and icon respectable regardless of your thoughts on his lyrical content. Granted, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, the Inkredibles and Lex Luger have as much to do with his ascent as Ross himself, so lyrical content hasn't always been the allure here. But Ross can be a supreme absurdist, even if he's saying things that just feel 100% wrong - like when he bragged about buying a watch instead of helping Haiti victims on Deeper Than Rap, or here on "Maybach Music IV" where he claims his opponents are getting abused like boys in Penn State bathrooms. Completely unacceptable on paper, but given filter through Ross' gruff grunts and lip spittle they're somehow shrugged off as a big goof trying to be funny.

Moments like that are also more easily explained within the context of the entire Ross listening experience. He's had several moments of coherency in the past couple of years but God Forgives, I Don't is Rick Ross in the midst of pure syntax error stream of consciousness Nas aspirationism. His verses come and go without leaving much of an imprint at all; until Andre 3000 appears on the epic (and mostly average) "Sixteen" this album is mostly about the grand yacht-oriented production and thinking to yourself, "Ross has a great voice for rap...what is he talking about?" If he were a more skilled MC the approach could go somewhere, but he's just not and the majority of his performance here becomes a series of self-actualization slogans, brand name dropping and reminding us that he can attend Miami Heat games. In fact, his obsession with the Heat might be the greatest thing about this thing: I count at least five mentions of him either being courtside or the potential of being courtside reason enough for a woman to date him. At one point, he even brags to a female that LeBron James lives down the street, as though Ross' sexuality is drawn from the ether of LeBron's estate. Which, again, is funny in Ross' goofily unintentional way.

It's definitely a disappointment that Ross seems to be coasting through most of this hour long production since a coasting Ross is generally not a Ross you'd want to be around (as the Rich Forever mixtape reminded us this past winter, and Self Made, Vol. 2 this summer) but thanks to his voice and the production God Forgives, I Don't remains an aurally pleasing experience even if it doesn't bring anything timeless to the table. Particularly notable is J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League's "Maybach Music IV" / "Sixteen" duo, a pair of tracks that flow together seamlessly from "MMIV"'s lush, orchestral values to "Sixteen"'s glossier take on Organized Noize vibe funk. It's essentially a 14-minute suite during the early portion of the album highlighted by a two minute instrumental and Ne-Yo histrionics and Andre 3000's five minute long verse. In other words, the half of the suite that has nothing to do with Ross at all. Even without guests outclassing the star, it would have been impressive to see the rest of the album as cared for as that little stretch.

Unfortunately, God Forgives, I Don't eschews the carefully crafted track sequencing and brevity of Ross' two previous career redefiners in favor of typical major release mistakes. All the grandiose songs are clumped together in the album's first half, while "Hold Me Back", "911" (an ode to Porsche, not emergency workers) and lead single "So Sophisticated" represent the trap sound that propelled Rich Forever into redundancy and a trio of songs featuring Omarion, Usher and Drake obviously cater to Ross' female contingent (which I'm suspicious of Ross having a broad enough appeal to necessitate a song with the chorus "Fuckin' you fuckin' you fuckin' you" cooed by Usher Raymond, you know?). It makes for an album without much character, just a bunch of clearly demarcated demographics thrown on a disc and told to play nice. Ross is definitely a rapper that needs to climb atop a variety of musical apparatuses while he pounds his chest, but it's not that much more engaging if you sap all the adventure out of the experience and lay everything out like a buffet.

The deluxe edition lets two highlights from Rich Forever, "Triple Beam Dreams" (featuring Nas) and "Rich Forever", tag along. Surprisingly, unlike other major label albums that toss in free mixtape tracks as some sort of ironic incentive to spend more of your money on an album than usual, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and DVLP seem to have gone back to their tracks and upgraded them significantly. "Triple Beam Dreams" is treated especially well, with a Hans Zimmer-like string section adding substantial tension to the arrangement. Two tracks Ross fans have probably already owned for months in advance still isn't much of a "deluxe" package, but considering these two tracks are better than nearly everything that comes before them on the disc, it's worth considering if you want to hear them remixed and remastered or skipped them the first go around.

for using that Jeffrey Osborne record, LOL. I've been rocking that shit (and even made a beat out of it) for the last decade...

the album is very ... formulaic? But I'll say this about Ross, at this point... he is the Aston Martin of rappers. The music he puts on his albums just seems at such a cut above from everyone else, even though his subject matter is rather trite and one-note, even though he has much better flow than lyrics... the whole package is just first-class.

I dunno if he can continually do this, but the bar's been raised. I think in a way he's achieved what Jay-Z wishes he could do in some ways. His music sounds like he's looking from the swag mansion in every facet.

that Andre guitar solo is absolute rubbish though, and should have been pooh-poohed

And by timeless, I mean the joints that you can see yourself going back to 3 or 4 years from now?

I can't think of any of this. It's mostly good, but I'm not overly excited about any of the joints.
