the slurring/swirling hook, the production to match, the socialization aspects of alchohol usage along with his own family history, the inner-monologue with his own conscience (which sounds a lot like 3 Stacks circa 2002 with the vocal effect except this kid has a much more nimble flow than Andre ever did).

Even without having heard this outside of my own office I can already see this is the frontrunner for anthem of the weekend.

I like this better than Cartoons & Cereal.

I can tell he's more comfortable on these 75-80 BPM tracks, but this is L.A. I need something I can throw in next to YG, Mann, and old Quik/Snoop/Kurupt. Doesn't even have to be a post-Jerk song...I like "Catch a fade" but it's more for the Hip Hop crowds like "9 times outta 10" was

In response to Reply # 15

I mean it's melodic but that's because he is but the hook really isn't that far from the kind of thing he was doing on 'ADHD' or 'Spiteful Chant'.

I think he could pull off the kind of records you're talking about but I don't want it to come off forced.

'Catch A Fade' was vicious but yeah, it was really a hip-hop record more than a mainstream single.

>But it's obviously commercial, talkin about a pool of liquor
>LOL.

This song is a celebration of intoxication about as much as 'Born In The USA' was a Rally For The Reagan Era.

Much like 'eight doobies to the face, twelve bottles in the case' was the setup on ADHD, these verses with nods to family history/pangs-of-conscience/peer-pressuring are the 'Fuck That' reply.

Like most quality art, it's a bit open-ended with enough gray area so that the listener can fit their own feelings into it rather than be being lectured or coerced one way or the other.

When I was outside this club 2 weeks ago, I was randomly singin "8 doobies to the face" and this modeley lookin White chick said "fuck thaaat!" so I know he's reaching the commercial type crowds already.

Our own dumb-ass old actor president in '84 missed that 'Born In The USA' was about a poor kid drafted by his government into a pointless/endless war then returning home a broken man until he tried to co-opt the supposed sentiment for an election year speech/tv-ad-campaign then got promptly ceased/desisted/denounced by The Boss.

Let 'em all pull out the lyric sheet or google it on ohhla later, the first hurdle is just being heard.

Kendrick could ride in that lane.......but he's on his way to some transcendant shit. He's going in a direction that's bigger than club music and BPM's. The hard thing for people is whether than can keep up with him and adapt. I can get lost in his music. I can party with it. ADHD is still a party staple of mine and will always be. That song came through and hurricane'd my world. Fuckin changed the way I look at what I can get into and where.

Even in 94, you probably heard "Represent" at the clubs in NY.

In order for Kendrick to REALLY get that L.A. crowd, he doesn't have to do the same shit Tyga and Joe Moses do, but I still feel he needs SOMETHING that can get into the club, even as an early vibe or as a feature, just so he can reach that audience as well.

that hits the clubs, I feel Kendrick can drop songs similar to Miguel/Cole "All I want is you" that can get played at SOME point, even if it's not during a Ross, Meek, or Travis Porter set.

Who knows, I'm being too much of a DJ right now...but I just want him to hit all crowds and not end up as one of those who's ONLY known by name and not by songs.

and then worry about the singles part down the road.

by that point he'll have his artistic credibility bona fides & a built-in loyal audience rather than put out some forced wack single like Wale on a choppy album then be forced to re-route and start over hanging on somebody else's coattails.

is because L.A. FINALLY found their own commercial type sound....so he has a few directions he can go that should still sound natural. With Wale and even J. Cole, their styles didn't really fit with any commercial sound that would help them blow, which is why people say that "Chillin" song as HELLA forced, along with "Work out" which most folks liked but still got mixed reactions.

Kendrick could probably make a strong single out of Dom "OPM"...Ty Dolla "Tricks", G. Malone "Rihanna," Clyde Carson "Slow down"...Bad Luck "Slut" or even a Tyler kind of track.

before you know it we've got four fake singles released over the next six months but no album.

Dr Dre sitting on OKP sayin to the engineer 'damn, maxx is sayin none of these leaks are money tracks'

*pushes album back to summer & begins trying to rap added verse over a KL guide vocal while a fleet of mathematicians calculate the EQs*

My main priority is making sure the album drops, I'll worry about the rest later (though I guess with a hit single that could be a chicken-or-egg thing).

I might be making a mistake in assuming this is the track they're referring to, but it seems like it is.

Early the next morning Lamar is back in the studio waiting for the other Hippies before a photo shoot. Taking the opportunity to touch up some tracks, he operates as his own engineer, pressing record a few bars early and then sprint hopping back into the vocal booth to lay his own vocals. Produced by Drake affiliate T-Minus, the track sounds a lot like, well, a Drake song with its bluntly emotional fluttering synths. It’s a record that could fit in quite comfortably on current day rap radio and yet Lamar seems a little embarrassed to be playing it in mixed company, perhaps recalling the fourth law of Top’s manifesto: Uniqueness. He emphatically points out that the track is not intended for his forthcoming album. It is, instead, “some freelance shit.”

It seems like he isn't even trying on some of these tracks, and he's still head and shoulders above everyone else, IMO.

What's crazy is, like the OP said, he has literally every element of the equation - lyrics, flow, concept, charisma, uniqueness, beat selection, etc. - without compromising one for the other. That's such a rarity, and he's still getting better.

there is no way they can lose. Dre knows he has something, every producer is going to want to work with them. I honestly haven't heard a wack verse from Kendrick ever. When his cd drops, i'm sure he'll have one song for the club or at least something that can get burn and people are going to take notice. I think that Buried Alive verse got him enough exposure that people will recognize him come his debut dropping.

In response to Reply # 0

he seems to have a 'voice' and unique and clear perspective to the music he makes. like Ketchums said he's excelling at any technical or artistic sense to making very quality rap music.

i haven't listened to Section 80 and I've really only heard this, The Recipe, and a few random tracks here and there. but i get the sense that while his skill at rapping and conveying excitement and energy with his skill is great, he's not really revealing much of his self in his music.

while his music could stand on its own, just on the merits of the skill necessary to pull it off, i think he could REALLY be a star if he mastered the art of taking the listener on a journey thru his 'lens'.

i think Kendrick is smart enough to pull something like that off. and alot of that 'sense' that an artist is pulling you through their music is dependent on image and impression, so it's more of a 'soft' skill than anything, but it helps make the music more relateable and personal.

Kendrick has revealed ALOT of himself in his music. Shit he did so in this track right here.

This dude excels at making compelling narratives about his surroundings, and in expanding on those thoughts and observations in intricate stories that he sometimes places himself into and at time he takes a step back and hits you with a wider view. At times he does this in the same track. It's pretty seamless and it's a rare quality.

His music is not super topical. You have to really pay attention to this shit to really see where he is coming from AND where he is trying to take you. It's a sobering but intoxicating listening expereince at the same time and it leaves you with something when you back up off it. It's residual. That right there is the mark of a true visionary.

There is a sincerity in his music that makes me really wonder what his process is when he writes.

Go listen to the Spiteful Chant, Heart Pt. 2, Cut You Off, and see about him personally.

At his CMJ show in NYC he did this monologue with a stool, acting out he and his father's interactions during parties when he was young. He is a very intelligent guy, very down to earth and you can see it in his music.

and the skill he uses in his music does display his intelligence and understanding of music and art.

i think i'm just over-excited from the prospect of someone from the young generation possibly not only having the technical rapping ability of a top-level golden age MC, but also fully utilize the artistic license and range that modern MC's have access to.

i'm attaching personal expectations to his career that i've never had for an MC that has come before Kendrick. i think i'm just anxious to have a current-day MC who makes music that i get excited about.

Kendrick IS talented and maybe the level of emotional openness i want from his music has more to do about me than it does about his career.

He is by far my favorite MC out right now. I had heard for a while that (O)verly (D)edicated was an experience and this guy was on some other shit, but it took me a while to ride in. There was a lot to get excited about from the release alone.

Section.80 was what really solidified it for me though. ADHD is one of the most visceral and inventive songs I've heard in a long, long time. The whole album really was off the hook, but not pretentious and not too over zealous.

I'm almost 30 and I feel like I can relate to this dude more than guys that are my age or a little older. He captured a feeling a lot of us have, and it is a genuine reflection of what influence really does to us and what motivates us, and what happens when live in the moment cause we aren't sure of the traps. It's also a rejection of a lot of what was becoming a culture devoid of compelling thought AND emotion. Kendrick's stuff isn't as disposible as a Drake record to me in that sense cause I always feel like Drake is pandering and not always being himself. The shit feels forced. I NEVER feel like that listening to Kendrick. He's always coming from somewhere legit and tryin to take us somewhere legit and I hope he doesn't lose that insight and foresight as he goes on in his career.

whose own buzz thankfully seems to be tapering a bit finally.

Wale's already bricked then flipped on a major & Meek will be blessed to have Juelz Santana's career.

Kendrick's buzz is more organic & he'll have a longer run at it than both as a result (well, that & just being more talented).

so I'll have a better idea of his whole package, and I think Kendrick is compelling, but the subject matter (outside of this song) doesn't make me want to listen.

i'm kinda old so that could be one factor that i'm not drawn to him, but i think he's not really a pop artist yet so he's making music more for him and his demographic and not trying to hit on topics (again outside of this one) that are more universally emotionally moving.

not just people trying hard to be unimpressed

some of the people in this post really comprehend my fandom

his music has changed and saved my life the past few years, i've listened to him more than I did Jay-Z in his heyday and Hov was my favorite MC ever

my anticipation for Kendrick is like how I viewed The Roots/Tribe/Common albums

usually fall under certain categories-

1 Haven't heard his catelog and base judgement on a handful of songs

2 Are aspiring emcees themselves or know someone who is...therefore they somehow "just dont get it" (see Judono or whatever above or Danny Swain)

3 Have a track record of hating on the West Coast...

4 Hanging on to a more traditional "sound"

5 Invent reasons like "he is too earnest" lol wtf??

6 Want to be seen as different by picking Q or Ab Soul over him...which...there's just no way.

I get its all subjective of course...but I just don't understand at this point how this dude can be denied.

I could understand if someone doesn't like his voice...it took a while to grow on me but

I haven't been this excited about an emcee since I discovered Act 1...and that of course was a quick burn due to severe lack of output.

No way dude is boring...he is the opposite of that and versatile as f*ck.

When the vast majority of hip hop subject matter is generally the same shit, and a lot of times is done with the purpose to do nothin but appeal to the most mundane and played out aspects of life and expression.

Some of us are ready to move on to some more compelling shit.

The reason people compare Kendrick to Nas is that he is such a good storyteller and he's trying to leave you with something to chew on in his shit, some food for thought. He doesn't just hit you with the disposable bullshit.

The things with this dude Kendrick though is that he is talented enough to not be boring and overbearing with his message. He has a dynamic personality and a gift for framing the deeper intentions in inhibitions.

i'm not sure what the point of this dipshit little exercise is--if the song is boring, it's boring--but some recent stuff i do like:

"new god flow"
"pop that"
"loco-motive"
"20 zig-zags"
"super rich kids"
"no lie"
"bring it back"
"elimination chamber"
"900 watts"
purrp album

now you can tell me how a song i find boring as shit is "better" than stuff i enjoy.

I'm not on that "conscious" rapper shit. AT ALL. I think that's a ridiculous discussion. Especially when we're talkin about Kendrick Lamar. I'm just sayin that hearin dudes snappin about the same tired ass shit over even more tired ass production isn't boring but this is? What the hell is not to like. The production is fuckin sick. On top of that he rode the shit to perfection......hardly any wasted words or wasted space. And the result was somethin you can relate to, shake to, bake to, and wake to. It hits you on so many different levels. I realize I am probably going far too into this for you and that was my first mistake.

second of their projects behind Section 80 so far I think it benefits from the continued improvement/maturation of the collective, I expect this to continue with Kendrick's upcoming album as long as it doesn't get bogged-down by major-label conventions & aspirations.

But Kendrick is the most high-profile Black Hippy member for a reason.

to me it is the most enjoyable and cohesive statement from anyone in the collective and lacks the couple of compromises found on Section.80. also what Q lacks in the technical ability Kendrick and Ab posses, Q makes up for with personality and grounded down to earth feel absent from from the other two. even though i feel Kendrick is the third best overall rapper doing it right now, as in i just really enjoy listening to the kid rap his ass off on everything (even if i don't like the song), this is how i have TDE releases i've heard:

Habits & Contradictions
Control System
Section.80
Overly Dedicated
Setbacks
Long Term Mentality

he hasn't found a way to FULLY meld his sound with the in-house TDE production sound. He's a very strong rapper though so I have faith he'll figure it out. I'd still take a 2012 Jay Rock album over a 2012 Game album.

This is exactly how crew conversations should be - with everyone arguing over who's the best.

I'm not gonna judge without hearing the song, however, the backlash countdown clock is now ticking...
