And the fall out as a result?

Doesn't the whole episode seem very quaint in 2012?

when it became public that Ray Dogg effectively owned the magazine and he took control completely, turning it into his personal mouthpiece for his violent jealousy of Marshall.

Like, the mag had full page ads in it declaring Benzino a freedom fighter waging a war to protect the purity of hip-hop culture from white interlopers.

if you take the best from Em show, his 8-mile songs, those 2 diss songs. you'll have a Masterpiece LP....his mcing was the shit on Em show but the beats wasn't hitting if someone remix that album adding them 5 songs and cutting the fact that'll be his classic.

Like, 2001 - 2003 or so. I loved Eminem Show, personally. I think even though there were a couple of "mehhh" songs, he truly found his balance between the Slim Shady persona and the Marshall Mathers reality and really killed that album on all cylinders. Is it my favorite of his albums to listen to? Maybe not (either MMLP or SSLP take that I think), but it's where I feel he's at his most...honest? Maybe. Most believable? Probably. It's hard to explain. But yea. Eminem Show in addition to those diss tracks, plus all the random Shady Records tracks he was putting out (tons of mixtape shit with Green Lantern), 8 Mile, guest appearances. The dude could not be stopped.

And oh I meant to mention, even though he's not a GREAT producer, I thought his beats were the best he did in that period, too. They were more diverse, and fit his rhyme style.

Yea..he was on fuckin fire during those 2 or 3 years. I miss that time period in general.

i never thought he was a bad producer. it's just he did way too much. it got boring hearing a whole albums worth of eminem beats. had he only done like 5-7 songs per album he produced, people wouldnt trash his beats so much imo

Heads could not BELIEVE they would put R&B artists on the front of the Hip-Hop Bible.

Some hardcore heads still mark that as the beginning of the decline...

The "Queen of Hip-Hop" was late 1994.

I can't remember if it was before or after the Martin Lawrence cover. It was certain;y around the same time.

The TLC cover was the first insult and then a few months later, Martin just drove the point home.

Unless I am mistaken, that was around the time they made the mag's motto, "The Magazine of Hip-Hop Music, Culture & Politics"

...TLC on the cover for the explicit reason of not giving it to the Beastie Boys instead (who were about to release "Check Your Head"). I got that issue when it dropped, and I've looked over it many times over the years. Yhe Beastie Boys were the ONLY other aritst that they covered that month that could have conceivably gotten the cover story that month. But they opted to put the R&B group with only slight hip-hop undertones over the white-boy rap group about to release an album with rock overtones (but still a good deal of straight hip-hop).

Honestly, I kinda understand. In 1992, it wasn't the right time for the "Hip-Hop Bible" to put white artists on the cover. It was a time not that far removed from the Vanilla Ice pop juggernaut. And it's in a weird way related to the same code that hip-hop had at the time, where putting R&B singers on your hooks was selling out, doing commercials for soda and popcorn chicken was selling out, and white rappers had to work twice as hard to get their props. I wish the Source had come up with a better alternative than TLC (nothing against their music, but it wasn't hip-hop at all), but I can see the logic that they probably used.

yeah, that's kinda messed up... but truthfully, I think it even goes beyond just simple racial politics. By 1992, Beastie Boys were becoming more identified with the alternative rock scene than with hip-hop, so while I can see why The Source would want to cover their new album... they may have been reluctant to have the Beasties cover the mag.

On the racial tip, though... didn't that issue feature the infamous "We Use Words Like Mackadicious" article by Upski?

Ultramagnetic MC's had an article in that TLC issue, and heads were saying they should've gotten that cover.

...or the Martin issue. If it was the TLC issue, then yes, they should have gave them the cover. It would also explain that TLC dis by Kool Keith in an interlude on "The Four Horsemen."

I was proud of DC but let's face it...he didn't belong there. He had done one feat on Yo Yo's album that wasn't even funny. TLC at least had a rap section in Lisa Lopez. And for real....she could spit.

I liked it better when hip-hop had a code of ethics of shit that you didn't/shouldn't do as an artist.

And moreover, that "Step into the World" remix was wack.
