"Unsung Con Funk Shun coming monday"

where do they rank with you in terms compared with other important R&B bands?

also what were they missing from being bigger? was Michael Cooper good, important or were you hit and miss with him as a lead singer for them?

i always felt they were a really good to very good band, however not great, but i dug alot of there stuff.

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

unlike kelly, they could bring it all the way live on stage.

because if you know your history of R&B with all due respect the 70's era represented something completely different a whole different animal and breed yo.

Kelly can hang on stage, its just he has nobody around to push even greater things out of him and since you went there on tiers and talent well you answered your response.

COn Funk Shun was 2nd tier IMO, however they had jams and could bring it live, however that era was different than the past 20 years.

Michael Cooper was alright, i guess. when he became Larry Blackmon light in the 80s, he realized his true corny potential.

also was with Con Funk Shun that was so funny.

Con Funk Shun a strong 2nd tier band, however they laid the stank for "Holly Ghost" for the Bar Kays uncredited back in the day.

Coop solo career wasn't half way as memorable as Melvoin Riley's on the truth.

I don't think he was really as good as he was within the confines of a group, largely because of the Larry Blackmon-isms.

Black bands ever really.

their discography is most definitely slept on...

in an era where you had to have ballads as well as uptempo and midtempo tracks if you were a Black band...they had as solid a all around catalog as there was...

looking forward to this episode -- after listening to their albums I finally "got" 'em. I really dug their ballads, but their TO THE MAX album is ill to me.

It looks like Felton Pilate is going to be interviewed and I'm really interested in listening to what he has to say, his name has been on a grip of records (famous and otherwise).

Coop was doing Sugarfoot not Larry... where the hell y'all think Larry got that "Oww" from?

And Coop was a solid solo act... he just picked a bad time to do it as the new jack movement exploded right after his debut album. His follow up was still pretty good but the forced new jack cuts took away from the album imo. He never could break through after that first album but he still dropped quality shit. But no doubt Coop was at his best working with Felton... both them cats need each other really.

And I still stand by my statement that no band outside of EWF & Cameo made better albums than CFS. Good to see they are getting a little shine with this unsung episode.

Thanks to Maxxx for the inbox about this thread... you know I had to chime in on my boys.

and I was about to make the Cameo comparison when WC mentioned that they didn't "copycat" their way through the '80s. because they always gave you a good balance of jams and ballads.

music lovers I should say...

don't know any who would be in the know about a Con Funk Shun, and don't love them....

I don't consider people who align a perceived age group to a certain type of music or artist serious music lovers..... I'm talking people who like music from eras beyond the ones they lived in.... Black folks like that.... I've never heard them fronted on......that's just me.

make some old jokes and call shit corny... despite the fact young black people today could use a little love and positivity in their life.

people like Sowhat just love the taste of sour... which is fine for them but then they want to spread that shit like Jehovah.

In response to Reply # 116

I met him in 86 at Jay King's Christmas Party around the time he was recording his first solo album out here in Sacramento. A good friend of mine (Theresa King) was also recording for Jay's label then so I found myself hanging out with Coop here and there in the early part of 87. It was a trip being a huge CFS fan and then actually kickin in with the man tha was basically the face of the group. I wouldn't go as far as calling him a friend but he's always been personable and friendly when I've seen him at shows since.

So yeah I admit I'm a little defensive when it comes to Coop and CFS but for the most part it's all in fun. But I really do think non west coasters hear shit differently because of their surroundings. What y'all hear as a sound that's too "clean" we hear as a "sunny" or feel good sound. When you live in a place with weather as great as Cali it's going to impact the sound of your music... for the most part it's hard to be mad when you go outside and it's 72 in November. I think the "dirtier" sound comes from places with high humidity in the summer and snow on the ground in the winter. CFS was just part of the landscape out here so we were exposed to their music in a way y'all never wear.

I loved Con Funk Shun. I never knew they were looked down upon, in other parts of the country, though.

I quasi-lurk over there, to see how that crowd reacts to those sort of thing. that's how I found out O'Bryan is releasing an anthology with 86% of his albums on it

In response to Reply # 0

that is they were in an era where bands like that had to compete with more straight ahead Funk bands....but also were in competition with the great soul crooners of the day....

I mean Con Funk Shun was in a battle for chart space with Parliament Funkadelic.....on the one hand, and Teddy Pendergrass and Al Green on the other end.....

to me that's what puts these bands on another level because they made impacts while competing against such a wide range of great hall of fame level artists.....and do it all on one album...or in one concert...

and my review of their Wiki page tells me their hits tended to hover in the lower reaches of the R&B Top 40 back then (w/a few top 5s). which is nothing to be ashamed of at all. that's quite an accomplishment considering the # of groups back then who wished they coulda had even one top 40 hit. so kudos to them.

but they had to go up against some fierce competition back then so it's no surprise they weren't able to crack the chart's upper reaches more often.

fuck you.

the charts indicate when they were putting out music the ppl didn't have as much appreciation for it (based on sales) as they did for music released by some of their competitors. their legacy seems to have them ranked somewhere below some of their competitors like Cameo, EWF, Kool & the Gang, P-Funk, etc.

so, i dunno. looking at their chart history i wasn't surprised. except for 'Love's Train'.

fuck you.

I've never been a big listener of their music but they always had a few songs on each album that I liked but I just listened to them like any other funk/r&b band out back in the day, nothing more.

was built and inspired by brick's "Dazz" right? the horn intro and the flutes,etc..

they had to play radio politics and i heard the Elements in there stew and a few other folks.

they were middle of the road on the funk for a chunk, though Chase me was tight, they had some jams.

they can play and I like them.

Chicago...

For us (in terms of my older cousins) it was all about Rick James, P-Funk, the Isley's and later on Cameo, MJ (that Off The Wall album got sooooo much burn) and Prince...

U talking about a place that worshipped at the alter of James Brown and Curtis Mayfield...So to my ears Con Funk Shun was funk-lite...

But Chicago LOVED Con Funk Shun's slow jams...Those joints got A LOT of play on WGCI...

i lived between Las Vegas and St. Louis from like 1979 to 1981. i associate all that Shiny or Jheri-Curl Funk w/Vegas. i remember driving around Vegas hearing it on car radios back then. it totally fits the vibe there. especially all those Solar records.

i think really all those records are from the West, and that's why they work so well in Vegas. but still. i love associating those records like that.

fuck you.

version of the elements which isn't a bad thing.

best example "got to be enough" is very EWF influenced and you can hear the chants and groove.

"too tight" as well, very EWF inspired and it worked.

In response to Reply # 86

Lakeside had more bottom and worked more mid tempo grooves... you could hear the SOLAR sound strong in there too.

CFS was more rhythm guitar and horn based... their jams tended to be more uptempo (usually around the 120bmp range)

I never once had either group remind me of the other.

Your a fuckin clown.

He got killed in STONE MOUNTAIN, which WAS Klan country maybe 40 years ago like most of the south, but is probably about 95% black at this point. I even know them apartments he got killed at cuz i had a broad living out there, Village Square Apartments off of Memorial Drive. He was a junkie and got robbed. Them same apartments are like mostly Somalian and African today. The Klan aint nowhere near that area, go to stone mountain in 2012 and you seeing niggas and Africans in that order. If you see a white man in that area he either a cop or a junkie.

Stone Mountain park has some rednecks that VISIT, then they take their honky asses back where they came from DIRECTLY after the Laser Show.

Fuck u and your mealy mouth uncle

Particularly because they were able to interview all the surviving members. It was good to see Felton still playing with the band, considering all that had gone on while he was in it, and that he and Coop seem to be on good terms as well. Or at least, Coop was diplomatic.

As for the arguments here and forth...

I definitely dug their more mellow joints over their uptempo ones, but that goes for about 99% of artists I listen to with a few exceptions....

EXCEPT what was on the TO THE MAX album -- that one's my favorite (it has "Love's Train" on it). Coop had some cuts as a solo artist, particularly "Over and Over" that I thought was a Guy song when it dropped until I listened closely to the singer.

I think I have Fever somewhere. I'll give it a spin, but the one song they played from it reminded me that it sounded a lil like '80s Kool & The Gang (probably because the same producer, Eumir Deodato was involved).

After the hits came rolling in the late '70s, they turned out to be more of a "grown and sexy" band rather than a "young and sexy act", and I believe this is the underlying issue. And if it is... it's some PB&J.

I generally don't fuck with either sort of artist, but if you got a groove, some good musicianship, and some ballads to spare, I'll roll with you. CFS had 'em in spades. And they hit pretty high on the R&B charts in an era where they were up against some of the fiercest competition that genre has ever seen. I bet it has a lot to do with Skip Scarborough's help along the way; their albums in their "classic" period were very strong. "California 1", "Let Me Put Love On Your Mind", "By Your Side", the aforementioned "Love's Train".

In a way, they remind me a lot of the Commodores... everyone tends to reduce them to a singles band, but the albums up to and through Commodores 13 (esp. Midnight Magic) were very solid.

They are a lot like the Commodores
I didnt realize it until you mentioned it
Their albums were nothing to sneeze at but folks look at them as a singles band
And like the Commodores, they are sometimes labeled as corny
But one who takes the time to listen to their records will know that's not true.
It's very difficult to do what those cats did as a self contained unit

I've warmed a bit to Fever but I really hated that album when it dropped. Electric Lady had my joint "Baby I'm Leaving" but fuck that title track and that Gap Band rip off "Pretty Baby". I remember back in the day when I heard they were working with Larry Smith (Who produced Whodini) I knew it spelled trouble for their sound.

http://grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q=Con+Funk+Shun+You+Make+Me+Wanna+Love+Again

The version by the late Vesta Williams (with the same production team) has my preference though by a notch,
because of the different sound and the great string arrangements either penned by Bryan Loren or Jeremy Lubbock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJRGzh0bXv4

Cedric's infectious and vicious bass in "She's A Star" really sparkles on the extended single mix

And from "Fever" i dig "Hard Lovin", "If I'm Your Lover", "Indiscreet Sweet" and the pulsating bass + synths on "Thinking About Your Baby"

"Baby I'm Hooked" sounded like '80s Kool & The Gang For Real

"Don't Let Your Love Grow Cold"... this was kinda funny, because Con Funk Shun would do songs like this, but the instrumentation here sounds like classic yacht rock.

Which is funny as hell to me.

Now some of those other tracks, especially "Lovin' Fever", sounds like they were getting that good Jheri Curl Funk on before cats really were on that wave. Up above where SoWhat said that they were part of the pre-cursor, I can see that now. I roll with those.

Truthfully it was kinda disappointing. The whole thing had a rushed feel and they left out and rearranged quite a bit of stuff. I'm wondering if Coop stopped telling the "Baby I'm Leaving" story after Louis McCall's death since he was the one his girl was fucking... I always assumed that was the reason he was never asked back. It sounds like Coop & Felton have put the emphasis on the "Love Train" story even though the chick in question wasn't eithers woman and the riff really wasn't that deep. No Pebbles and her connection to the band either.

All in all it wasn't a very good episode.... but then maybe it's just because I'm too aware of the group and their real history.

you know how those shows are geared Bro.i mean we got half baked with the Sly Stone one and others and CFS got the same treatment as well.

heck they goofed at the start of the show when they showed pictures of both Tower of Power and Sly and the Family stone and yet never acknowledged Tower of Power by name despite showing a picture of them twice early on in the clip talking about the bay area funk scene.

mistermaxxx R.Kelly, Michael Jackson,Stevie wonder,Rick James,Marvin Gaye,El Debarge, Barry WHite Lionel RIchie,Isleys EWF,Lady T.,Kid creole and coconuts,the crusaders,kc sunshine band,bee gees,jW,sd,NE,JB

Miami Heat, New York Yankees, buffalo bills

There wasn't a lot of dirt in the episode but I give it props just for shining a light on McCall's wife, I knew nothing about her but she seemed to play a critical role in their career.

Their similarity to EWF was not something I really thought about until reading the thread, but I can hear it now. The mix of ballads and jams, the contrasting styles of the two singers, excellent live shows - very Earth-y.

They may be 2nd tier in the history of soul, but their 1977-85 streak is nothing to sneeze at. I can't think of many bands that made it through disco, the decline of funk, and the emergence of crossover and hip-hop relatively unscathed.

Ive seen them live at least 4 times and my uncle gave me their greatest hits cd back in 1995 and their light skinned brother on bass is really good especially when they gave him some solos and he actually tapped me on the shoulder and shook my hand especially when I didnt expect it and I really appreciated that especially since most musicians that are very egotistical . ffun is what they are known for.....
