"is there a prince song cover better than how he did it?"

i almost want to say i feel for you
but nah
to me, even if another singer came out with the song first
if he wrote it and sang it, his version is the best

what say you?

life always offers you a 2nd chance...it's called tomorrow. use it wisely

All P.

No one has ever covered any of his joints better than him.

People will say Chaka and Feel For You - the production style of Chaka's record was really unique, it was a very successful record, and it was a very strange, much bigger, pop version of the original. There was a lot of growth within that 5-7 year span of the release of the two records in terms of production so it's definitely memorable - but kinda corny. Especially given his funk value and hers.

Prince's version of Feel For You is still fresh, I prefer it.

Now if we had to say who -

the only people we should consider are the people he produced. lol.

Prince's original is nice too. but Chaka and Melle Mel and Arif Mardin brought something to that song that Prince didn't. they took it to the stratosphere.

i think her version sounds pretty fresh. it's definitely a product of its era but i think it was key in helping DEFINE the sound of its era. in that way it sounds less dated than some other records from back then. but that could be b/c that sound is retro now...it's come back around. though i've been jamming that 12 inch since before the electro/80s thing was retro cool. it's been my shit since the 1st time i heard it.

fuck you.

they take a song written by P, put the greatest rapper of all-time up to that point on one of the first 'features', gets Stevie MF-ing Wonder to put a trademark harmonica part on it, dude from the System kills it on the synths, Arif produces the thing like he's trying to make the most monumental musical moment of all-time and then Chaka *bodies* the vocal like only she could.

There is no way in hell the Prince version can even stand up to that, his joint always sounded small to me after hearing it & while I still like it that was one time in the mid-80s where they shot for the stars and actually got there.

Sinead's is terribly wack in comparison. Lost all the funk and feel
and raw vocal passion when she did it... fucked up the melody and everythang.
Might as well have been that Corrine Bailey Rae "I Wanna Be Your Lover"
Nintendo remix.

i like Sinead's restrained, pained take on the song. it fits the lyrics better than Prince's version. that's not a song that needed to be taken to church. his and Rosie's version sounds like an American Idol rendition. like they just wanted to show off what they can do w/their voices. which is fine for what it is. when i'm in the mood for that sort of thing.

but overall i much prefer Sinead's version.

the Family's version is so boring i'd rather forget it.

fuck you.

I agree with you about the sidno conner version. her version of nothing compares to you sounded DEAD and she hasnt been able to come back since that song in 1989 so there you have it. she has done albums and tours since then and all of em flopped. LOL.

Exactly @ the Enya synths. I mean the shit is just so terrible. Prince
and Rosie sounded truly HURT and broken up just like the lyrics. Shit
was real. I caint believe none of these people is black in here sayin
that Sinead version is worf a shit.

That Sinead bullshit was everywhere and I swear and didn't even know one
lyric of that shit. Soon as a negro heard the Prince version I'm tryina
learn the song to sang to females. It was years fo somebody told me that
was that big hit that Sinead had. Honestly never paid one piece of attention
to that terribly boring soulless rendition.

On P.M. Dawn's Jesus Wept album
the last track was a medley of 3 songs
One of which was 1999

Depending on my mood, I can give that one the edge
The same with their version of "Once In A Lifetime" from the same medley

Here's a link to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRxMVUcsews

Sinead O'connor easily over Prince and Rosie for "Nothing that compares 2 U" Prince was straining something serious on that song, Rosie saved it IMO 1)

Chaka Khan turned "I feel for you" out 2)

Mitch Ryder "When you were Mine" the drums moved me more on his version which was produced by John Cougar Mellencamp 3)

Stephanie Mills "How come u don't call me anymore is about a tie with Prince's IMO 4)

Me'lissa Morgan's version of "Do Me baby" works and I got that neck and neck with Prince's IMO 5)

in fariness there are only a few folks covering Prince's songs that i like as well or better.

now on the other side of the coin Prince can't cover nobody at all IMO. I don't care for any of his cover songs studio versions at all.

i can kinda tolerate his live covers, depends on the song, however not studio

he is very limited as a cover artist imo, and that works against him, because this cat is cool with nicking pieces of parts of other songs and using them in places, however left to cover it,things just don't compute IMO

Prince's best tribute to Joni was one line on 'Dorothy Parker'.

He needs to leave actual full songs of hers alone for the most part & I love P even more than I do Joni.

In response to Reply # 33

obviously P's got a falsetto but I don't need to hear him put it on for five minutes of 'Dont Interrupt The Sorrow'.

Joni is lyrical, you need somebody who can punctuate phrases & make the words feel lived-in/toyed-with....more like a Fiona Apple type even though she doesn't possess the same vocal tone at all.

Aside from Joni with P, I thought he messed up 'I Cant Make You Love Me' off Emancipation.

He coulda done at least part of that in his normal register & made something more organic-sounding instead of overly processed/produced.

I was so excited about the prospect of him mixing in some covers on that album.

Up to that point I'm not sure he'd put out a studio album with stuff that wasn't his, seemed like that could be a benefit of having more freedom & a longer album run time.

Then I heard them: http://images.yuku.com.s3.amazonaws.com/image/gif/2dd35b654e70677ae1d9c046a42873180f71c8a.gif

but i've read that WB had discouraged or disallowed it. and so that's why there were several covers on Emancipation and the 1st single was a cover song.

so far the only studio cover i've really enjoyed was 'Crimson & Clover'. well, 'Everyday Is A Winding Road' and 'One of Us' were alright, too.

but when Emacipation dropped it sorta showed maybe he would have been open to that earlier particularly combined with his live shows.

otherwise probably because on some level his prolificness as a writer was already tailing & the becoming a 'musician's musician' type was already coming into play.

It's good to put on to switch things up
but it can only compete with the short version of Hair
cause the 12" version is one of the Great Prince Records.
The drums, the bass, the shredding;
that 12" is nasty.

and of course
look at these things:

I got it just about neck and neck with the original... and Cyndi might even have the edge by a hair.

which worked real well. prince's is tight and is more of a 60's type of groove and feel. i like version better based on feel, however on sound she moved me a bit more.

as good as his earlier songs were, you could update them with a more full sound on drums or keyboards, because prince had a almost wooden feel on certain songs back then.

like for instance " i feel for you" was stiff imo and he was still working out the sound kinks, you hear his keyboard tuba solo near the end of i feel for you? a little rough.

when you were mine the drums were stiff. so from a production and arragement perspective their are some of his cuts you could flip and turn them out.

of course after he got his thing down pat on controversy and especially the 1999 era well he was a different sounding kind of an animal in his prime and peak, however stuff from 78-81 which alot stuff got covered it could be as good or better because their was room to enhance the production of the sound and yet his early stuff was cool for what he was about at the same time.

princess did a cool version of " its going to be lonely"

Jill Jones did a good version of " With You"

" still waiting" got covered and it was good.

Yup, some of the songs were almost skeletal blueprints in retrospect, one of the only joints I don't think you could do that to was 'Uptown'.

That one felt like he really hit the mark, minimalist but still powerful.

very well masked and yet not so. Andre on Bass and you can hear the groove in their.

what made Prince stand out back in the day was the skelton tracks and then he would pound you live and bring them to live in a different way.

Prince was cold with that, until industry cats told him his skelton thing was to liteweight and then that is when he got bombastic and started to over produce and add that ultra and jerri curl sheen to his songs and productions.

but the old Prince understood less was more.

that version compared to Prince's is like comparing The Five Heartbeats to The Five Horsemen
That funky ass beakdown is what makes that song and needless to say they can't keep that funk where it should be the way Prince and the girls did it.

still talking about Neon Telephone.

Anyway, thoughts on that Raspberry Beret?

I don't think I liked it all that much for stubborn-teenage reasons when I first heard it in 90/91 but a couple years ago I stumbled upon it again towards the end of Zevon's life (around the time of that last Letterman appearance) and actually developed an appreciation for its raggedy-rocker charms.

It's funny, because Prince ended up covering "Best of You".

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1551990/foo-fighters-perplexed-by-prince.jhtml

But we can try to get to the bottom of the whole Prince/Foo thing, the roots of which actually reach all the way back to 2003, when the Foos recorded a version of the Purple One's scandalous "Darling Nikki" (from his breakout 1984 album, Purple Rain) and released it as a B-side on the Australian version of their "Have It All" single.

Though it may have only been intended for our friends Down Under, the Foos' version of "Nikki" actually began to accumulate radio play here in the States and even became a set-closing staple at Foo Fighters shows in 2004.

"Whenever we finish an album , we just think it's fun to do a couple of covers," Foo drummer Taylor Hawkins explained. "Dave loved 'Darling Nikki' because it was really funky. And so we just recorded our version in my garage, and somehow it ended up getting played on radio — which was weird, because we just did it as a sort of joke."

And while the band — and its fans — yukked it up, Prince was less than pleased, telling Entertainment Weekly that he didn't appreciate the Foos (or anyone else) covering his work, and that Grohl and company should "write own tunes."

"We wanted to put it out here in the States, but Prince wouldn't let us," Hawkins said. "I heard that he didn't like our version. Or maybe he just didn't like us doing it."

Fast-forward nearly three years to January 29, when a studio version of Prince melding a version of "All Along the Watchtower" with the Foos' "Best of You" made its worldwide debut on Howard Stern's Sirius satellite radio show. Reportedly sent to Stern by someone in Prince's camp, the mash-up was greeted with enthusiasm by not just Stern ("I got chills"), but a large portion of the blogosphere too.

So when Prince took the glyph-shaped stage at Miami's ProPlayer Stadium during halftime on Sunday, it seemed rather likely that he'd be performing the tunes — and he did, working both numbers into a jam-packed medley that also included Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" and "Baby I'm a Star" and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary."

But it also raised a series of questions — chief among them, was Prince covering the Foos because he's a fan or because he was firing a return salvo over the bow of the S.S. Foo?

"Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I'd love to find out," Hawkins laughed. "I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of 'F--- you' to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did."

Hawkins said he was clueless about Prince's plans to work "Best of You" into his Super Bowl set. "I was watching the game at our producer Nick Raskulinecz's house, and since he's doing the new Rush album, all the guys from the band were there," he said. "I mean, I'm outside smoking a cigarette with Neil Peart and someone sticks their head outside and goes, 'Uh, dude, Prince is doing your song.' " Hawkins said he hasn't heard from anyone in Prince's camp about the cover (neither has MTV News, which made several attempts to contact him about his Super Bowl medley).

Hawkins said the entire band is thrilled — if a little puzzled — by the cover. And with the Foos in the very early stages of work on a new album, there's always the possibility of the band firing up the tribute machine one more time, trying to rankle Prince again.

"We're just getting started on a new album, just demoing and stuff right now," Hawkins said. "But maybe we'll get cracking on a version of 'Purple Rain' to see if maybe he'll hate it even more."

Chaka alone made it a better version. But stevie's Harmonica was re-damn-diculous.

Sinead sold NC2U better.

this post just made me play that joint in my office & it was all I could do after a two-beer lunch on a Friday not to turn that volume up to ten & start up-rocking in my damn office when that Mel intro comes on.

It's not disrespecting Prince at all to say that adding three different genres/generations of black musical heavyweights into the mix they were able to improve upon his blueprint.

I'm really not sure any organic track (i.e. not some gimmick or benefit 'We Are The World' tribute) has a stronger/more-diverse assemblage of talent on one classic single.

You've got the most prolific songwriter of the 80s penning the composition.

You've got a legit r&b diva in at the peak of her powers.

Musically accompanied by a notable synth-pop group during the pinnacle of that form of music's commercial viability.

A Motown legend & 'Short List' overall artist adding his own unmistakeable harp sound.

Legendary producer who won Grammies for songs in four separate decades.

And then the best MC in the world at the time with one of the most famous mic-checks of all time.

I fail to see one individual song that contains that much individual talent from different eras & musical disciplines come together to make one song & actually have it come out successfully.

it's my favourite version, although i will agree the sax solo hasn't aged well

I will admit Chaka's version of I Feel For You edges it but P still wrote it so..... *shrugs*

me either,

the prince version grew on me but i still think he has yet to the the definitive version of it, i loved that family album (i really dug clare fischers arrangements) so that's my version, even though i appreciate sineads version

as far as i'm concerned chaka is the only one to best prince on his own song i don't count sinead because

dude

i never could get ready 4 sinead becuase of her use of the word mama
Maybe she was singing to a chick but I don't think that was the case so
know your jive talk 101 before singing a song! LOL!!

D--NO WAY!!! Those drums at the end of the song alone can't be fucked with let alone everything else that's going on in that song (finger cymbals, filters, killer guitar solo and a heartfelt, honestly written song)

the lyrical content alone suited tevin far better.

though TC use to say he was uncomfortable doing the track. however it easily sounded better being sung by him.

Prince doing it live with the drums and guitar parts was cool.

PRINCE's version is a cover.

just like Prince's version of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is a cover.

and i like the way Tevin sang 'Shhh' but i think Prince did it better, both on wax and on stage (repeatedly).

even when Prince first came out he never wrote stuff like that.

this was far better suited to Tevin IMO, i like the live instrumentation aspect of the song.

Its a weird thing because Prince given up a slow Jam to a dude who ain't part of his inner clique and then this cut worked for TC

like some homework'. basically most of the 1st verse where he talks about not doing it in his bedroom b/c they'd get caught and waiting till everyone's asleep. it sounds like a kid plotting to sneak around on his parents. the rest works just fine.

he kills the song live.

and i was surprised he gave Tevin that song too. he must've really believed in that kid's talent.

i always say that Tevin was the last closes thing to a younger MJ that i have seen and heard and he had the making of blowing up because lets remember it took Usher a good minute before he caught on.

when they did Black Men United "U will know" Tevin was the happening cat from the Black Male Teenage crew and side.

i was like WOW Prince digs this kid because Prince only gave slow jams to the time on that tip.

yeah he dug TEVIN. Tevin could sing and perform on the real real.,
