a lot of less-than-a-dollar records got pumped up to insane amounts after being sampled (and being popular off that). Like Skull Snaps, especially. "Impeach The President" wasn't that popular a song until it was sampled.

the 40% when it's not, is when it's a straight jack or an "obvious" jack of a song that was popular in the first place.

Like most James Brown (I wouldn't say "Funky Drummer" counts, because it wasn't included in Greatest Hits collections for a while).

If this was about quality, of course the original wins. And maybe once the 90s nostalgia goes away Can't Touch This will fade away as an ironic choice to throw on, but for now I think it still a better known song. But Super Freak will be the most popular song in the long run, while Can't Touch This will probably be forgotten.

my instinct is to say "De La"

but I hear that song now so much in old school sets I have to wonder if they didn't yap because it was such a popular song.

it was a BITCH to find the song in any compilations or its holding album in any form from its discontinuation in the '80s until 1993 though.

ironically it is my favorite De La Song, not just because of the use of that record (and how they flipped it for the video/12") but because really... it is a pretty good intro to the group. Like, that might as well be the De La Soul mission statement in 1989.

It's tough for me.

Masquerade is such an epic soul masterpiece, but on the other hand I'd never have discovered it if I didn't hear Who Shot Ya first.

Not to mention, that's Big's finest moment as an MC.
