"its officiaL. d'angeLo is the Ricky WiLLiams of music (espn 30/30 pareLL..."

On espn2 Last night I watched the 30/30 for the La Raiders/nwa documentary made and produced by ice cube. It was an hour long and it was dope. Then, after that one, they showed the one about Ricky WiLLiams-- the university of Texas running back/Saints RB/miami doLphins... I highLy recommend u watch it....

Anyway.... I'll be damned if d'angeLo isn't the ricky wiLLiams of music. If u watch that episode there are so many pareLLeLs between them. Supreme waste of taLent... battLing of inner struggLes...

Has anyone seen it?

Shit just dawned on me. A damn shame..

felt like a Behind The Music with some Raiders stuff placed in there with a way more loose/tenuous connection than even the Pac/Tyson one (which was okay even with the cringeworthy spoken-word shit).

has had a very good career notwithstanding his self imposed exile from football...and he's proven to be one of the most introspective and self aware athlete you'll find in all of sports.

I guess there's some similarities in the two in that they both never gave in to the expectations that others have had for them and did things according to how they saw fit.

little info on Ricky: This season Ricky Williams achieved a milestone for all running backs which is rushing for over 10,000 yards in his career.

but overall the parallels aren't equivalent.

Yeah, I'm not sure Ricky Williams feels he has anything to prove to pro football or the fans.

D'Angelo, on the other hand, is definitely feeling the pressure to perform.

Initially I believed that after the success of Brown Sugar and Voodoo

but

I think because of the way the music industry has changed since he was last on the scene, I don't believe that he's chasing after that commercial success...and I based that off the new material I've heard from him thus far. Also, when you look at the number of units he moved w/Brown Sugar and Voodoo you see that they both sold around the same amount of records which demonstrates he has a core group of fans who'll continue to support his music...and that's the most any artist in today's music climate can ask for. How many other relatively new artists who had early success would still have ppl waiting for another cd from them if they had been off the scene for as long as D'angelo has?

I don't think he necessary feels pressured to do superstar numbers in today's climate.. just to you know.. live up to the legend, musically speaking.

Ricky never Lived up to his hype save for 2 seasons... but the 30/30 doc is uLtimateLy a story of redemption. And missed opportunities. So in coLLege ricky was the top rushing RB of aLL time. And we know how thestory goes. Adi think wit the d'angeLo story it aLso can be a story of redemption if we can get this aLbum from him, the music is jammin, and it gets some criticaL accLaim aLong with some superstar saLes...

to me both stories are fascinating and very simiLar in terms of taLent, expectations, success, recLusiveness, faiLure, and the chaLLenges and struggLes of making it back to the top.

I can't wait to see D's progress

naw he didn't live up to all the hype however he still had a good career, however D'angelo mirrors more closer to Ryan Leaf.

all hype and what not and then what?

you can't compare D'angelo to anybody that actual had some sort of career, because D'angelo never has came back and choked. that puts him in the Crying Leaf bag and its sad for a brother to be lumped with that turkey.
