OK. I like ATCQ. Their old stuff is raw dope, no ifs ands or buts about it. I went and got their new album "The Love Movement". I turned it on. The first thing I heard was some bass, and nothing else. Just some vocals on top of 1 bass beat.
"Maybe its just some weird ass intro" I thought to myself. But by track 5, I was checking my CD player to make sure it wasn't still on track 1. I was still listening to the same damn beat. By track 10, I was starting to wonder if they didn't get one bass drum sample and loop it for an hour and just rap every song to it, with SPARSE other samples.
By albums end, I was bored almost to tears. I haven't heard an album with beats so similar on every song since Scarface's Untouchable album. I think this one even tops that. Not only does almost every song have the same, simplistic, dull beat, but its a 21 track album thats about 20 tracks too long.
You almost forget there's even lyrics on the album, because your brain gets fixated on just how boring and wack the beats are. Wondering when that tight jazz & blues loop is going to kick in and the old tribe flavor comes in. But it never does. Not even in the bonus remixes and stuff. They're all boring. I mean, for christs sake, even no limit makes more interesting beats than these, and considering how utterly HORRIBLE no limits home-made radio shack rapmaster keyboard ass beats are I think that's saying quite a lot.
There is one song that has more than a simple bass beat, but it has so much non harmonized sample loops on top of each other that is just sounds like wild noise. At this point in my life I dont feel like skipping through the CD to find the name of this particular track; but I don't think it's so necessary to this review.
And who's bright idea was it to have wack ass "what what what" Noreaga on here, can you say commercial rap appeal?
I usually don't completely ignore the lyrics when giving my opinion of an album, but the beats stand out SO much on this album that it's hard for me to write about anything else. I don't know if they had a $100 production budget for the whole album or what, or perhaps its some new concept album where they use one beat for the whole album and see how many suckers will buy it.
So bottom line, unless you are a tribe called quest MEGAFAN, who simply MUST have every single thing they ever do, please save your money and steal a metal trash can lid & a wooden spoon and bang out some drum beats; perhaps you can record them and mail me the tape, I'm sure it will entertain me for longer than this album did.
After hearing this CD, I'm starting to think they had the right idea when they broke up. Maybe they listened to the final version of this album and just gave up hope.
A final bit of irony, fife's lyrics in one of the songs (again I forget which, since they all sound the same), had several lines about how he'd never use wack beats, and how his beats are always incredible, and so on. I couldn't help but to let out a laugh from disbelief when I heard that. My man must be deaf & blind cause he cant see that he cant hear. __________________________________________
