"its funny how "Love Movement" is erased from the collective psyche of hh"
Thu May-03-12 01:31 PM by ABROCK33

even they act like it didnt exist

its like Micheal Jacksons "Invinceable" in that in the grand scheme of their catalouges you just dont remember to play it because of all its stacked up against

was it even hinted at in the Documentary?

a novice listener to ATCQ wouldve thought their career ended after BRL

if it wasn't for "Find a way" I would venture to say it would never even be represented in discusions of the group

If each ATCQ album had to be represented by a mark of punctuation

instead of being the exclamation point to their extradiordinary career (!-The low end theory),
or even a semi colon (;-PITTTFR)
or question mark ( ?-BRL)
TLM it was just an elipsis (...) an expresion of an unfinished thought

this lp doesnt fit anywhere

it isnt great
it isnt innovative
it isnt a sharp turn
its just an album that we have no reason to remember so we dont

I'm not sayin it was bad cuz it wasnt but it certainly wasn't good enough to be memorable either (altho their were some good songs)

something about the lp from its white cover down to the actual music was non descript

if that indeed does turn out to be their last album as a group they went out so softly we hardly noticed

Too be honest, not many. you got a point, but the reason has a lot to do with the fact that they only did one video for it, and I don't know if they had a tour. they didn't leave much for us to have vivid memories

single. crazy how it's on their worst album. I remember thinking when it came out, "This album is going to be fire!!!"

Sidenote: Once again had me sleeping on Beats Rhymes and Life. I hated that single. But the album was pretty solid.

i wish they kept going after it... i guess everyone does tho. It leans heavily on Slum Village's style. not just the Jay Dee beats, but tip and phife were doing a t3/baatin thing.

Listened to it this week, and it feels like a demo for a Q-Tip solo LP more than a full fledged Tribe album. In fact, listening to it in that mindset makes it gel better. Phife doesn't seem to fit, with all the girls songs and such. I wonder if he was frustrated with the limited subject matter.

Imagine "LM" as Tip's first solo and "Amplified" as the second.

The thing about it, the production sound on there was PERFECT for the 1998 era. It didn't sound as mid 90's Boom Bap, which is probably why some of y'all hate it, and it had that great feel that was East Coast but a liiil West, a lil commercial. Dope drums and basslines more so than samples.

I also don't understand how folks LOVE Fantastic Vol. 2 but hate this. The albums were similar production wise due to Dilla's sound. And it's not many, or even any, WACK tracks on here. I love the energy to it, had dope personality, a good flow, etc. etc etc.

I don't get why folks are against it.

and probably number #2 on my list

I think I like it so much because it's simple, there aren't any real quotable's throughout but it really felt like an even project to me. But no knowing how much drama was going on all those years I can't blame them for not making their "last" joint a classic or even good enough to be compared to their older stuff.

might have something to do with knowing all the lyrics too, so simple lol

today, it's only certain songs I go back to, but they still crank to me in a way that is almost "un-Tribe" compared to their first three records. It's interesting that way.

If it is their last album, then I'm cool with it, because after that point I could see that Tip and Phife were going in different directions.

plus all the native tongue appearances/collabs... plus qtips production on crooklyn dodgers and the infamous album...

BRL was hugely disappointing to me at the time. prolly not worth saying that to someone who likes BRL but...

ive tried listening to it a cpl times more recently since its resurrection here (like.. within the last 4 years) but i still dont like it

its not 2012 radio hiphop bad to me and in a straight dilla dj set i dont mind at all hearing something from BRL but...

yeah

meanwhile... LM had the joint with red and busta that still GOES

i think imma play that right now in fact

Really?

wow, that's interesting.

I'm partial to BR&L, which to me is like three albums in one. part Q-Tip catharsis, part Tribe followup, part coming of age storyline/concept album. Tip, Phife and Consequence actually had good chemistry on "Jam" and "Phoney Rappers". There's a lot happening in that one album. By contrast, IMO, there's not ENOUGH happening on LM

The love movement was good . It's not perfect but it has more than enough joints on it. His Name is Mutty Ranks... that beat is raw Phife held it down. Hot 4 U is crazy nice. then against the world comes in, thats dope to me. Common Ground is the ish. Damn! I think I do like it more than beats rhymes and life.

they were just 'beats'
they weren't the sonic epics people were used to from Tribe
their beats just had this feel to them that made the music big in the ear of the listener, and this album didn't really have that

September 29, 1998 was seen as one of the best ever days for new releases in hip hop. This, Blackstar and Aquemini were all released that day (in addition to others that I'm probably forgetting).

It was very highly anticipated.

It took me a few years to "grow on me" but TLM is a banger, front to back unlike the listless B,R & L.

TLM isn't on the same level as the legendary first three (one of the best three album runs in not only hip hop but the history of music IMO), of course, but it's still a strong release.

I agree that it doesn't exactly sound "final" but life is weird, it may not be.

Good album by one of the greatest groups in hip hop history.

Tribe, here again, is a victim of its own success. Anything less than a classic is derided.

The production on that album is clean and crisp. Q-tip and Phife aren't legendary rappers all of the sudden. Ummah is no longer one of the most talented production ensembles in hip hop history? And you have a classic single.

I know that it's not cool to like anything in the Lesson, but c'mon...

it was labeled as wack around here at first
then Dilla died and it was all of a sudden an excellent, near classic album
then after a few years it was back to being wack again

Amplified too. It didn't seem to get much praise at all before dilla passed.

... I knew what I was getting into when I bought it.

-I knew that it was rushed because of the fire.
-I knew that it would sound closer to BR&L than Midnight Maruaders
because of Dilla.
-I knew that because it was the last album that the chemistry was
not there and it showed on BR&L.
-Consequence all over BR&L let me know that at least one of them that
them did not want to do it anymore.(Phife)

Granted it's not as good as an album as there previous efforts, it's still a solid album. Was it a solid Tribe album? No! They are much better than TLM and so is Dilla. But was it a solid hip hop album? Yes!

And lets not forget that this shit dropped the same day as "Aquemini". And I think that this was the last year/season that you could go to your music spot, buy 4 albums, come back on your next payday, buy 4 more albums and be completely happy with all your purchases.

this was a pretty good way to call it a day imo.

totally diff from the previous album. totally diff from what theyre best known for. it was tribe going in a new direction and trying something new but still sounding like them. it was like tribe feeding off SV without imitating them. like how erykahs nu amerykah fed off GAM.

TLM is seriously underrated if you ask me.

makes me wonder how they would have sounded if they didnt split. tribe could have been one of those groups to keep going and tried out different things, that would prob have turned out better than other experiments in rap like electric circus. so in my book, its an album that hinted at something that could have been, rather than something to write off.

really TLM is the sister album to fantastic vol 2, but with better rapping lol

BRL was def dilla influenced and a lot of it was down to dilla, but i dont think tribe really figured out how to still sound like them and not dilla on there, cos half those BRL beats were like the dilla beats on labcabin

on TLM they gave those beats the classic tribe/bob power sound, and started experimenting with their flows and the beats and arrangements prob from hearing SV

47. "TLM review from Sep 30, 1998"
In response to Reply # 0

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.music.hip-hop/browse_thread/thread/64d679c7a6e9a107/8700729adb142db5?hl=en&q=love+movement+tribe#8700729adb142db5

OK. I like ATCQ. Their old stuff is raw dope, no ifs ands or buts about it. I
went and got their new album "The Love Movement". I turned it on. The first
thing I heard was some bass, and nothing else. Just some vocals on top of 1
bass beat.

"Maybe its just some weird ass intro" I thought to myself. But by track 5, I
was checking my CD player to make sure it wasn't still on track 1. I was still
listening to the same damn beat. By track 10, I was starting to wonder if they
didn't get one bass drum sample and loop it for an hour and just rap every
song to it, with SPARSE other samples.

By albums end, I was bored almost to tears. I haven't heard an album with
beats so similar on every song since Scarface's Untouchable album. I think
this one even tops that. Not only does almost every song have the same,
simplistic, dull beat, but its a 21 track album thats about 20 tracks too
long.

You almost forget there's even lyrics on the album, because your brain gets
fixated on just how boring and wack the beats are. Wondering when that tight
jazz & blues loop is going to kick in and the old tribe flavor comes in. But
it never does. Not even in the bonus remixes and stuff. They're all boring. I
mean, for christs sake, even no limit makes more interesting beats than these,
and considering how utterly HORRIBLE no limits home-made radio shack rapmaster
keyboard ass beats are I think that's saying quite a lot.

There is one song that has more than a simple bass beat, but it has so much
non harmonized sample loops on top of each other that is just sounds like wild
noise. At this point in my life I dont feel like skipping through the CD to
find the name of this particular track; but I don't think it's so necessary to
this review.

And who's bright idea was it to have wack ass "what what what" Noreaga on
here, can you say commercial rap appeal?

I usually don't completely ignore the lyrics when giving my opinion of an
album, but the beats stand out SO much on this album that it's hard for me to
write about anything else. I don't know if they had a $100 production budget
for the whole album or what, or perhaps its some new concept album where they
use one beat for the whole album and see how many suckers will buy it.

So bottom line, unless you are a tribe called quest MEGAFAN, who simply MUST
have every single thing they ever do, please save your money and steal a metal
trash can lid & a wooden spoon and bang out some drum beats; perhaps you can
record them and mail me the tape, I'm sure it will entertain me for longer
than this album did.

After hearing this CD, I'm starting to think they had the right idea when they
broke up. Maybe they listened to the final version of this album and just gave
up hope.

A final bit of irony, fife's lyrics in one of the songs (again I forget which,
since they all sound the same), had several lines about how he'd never use
wack beats, and how his beats are always incredible, and so on. I couldn't
help but to let out a laugh from disbelief when I heard that. My man must be
deaf & blind cause he cant see that he cant hear.
