How about this one, Prince can't hardly even sing, period. Prince's voice is weak at times especially when he tries to go all high with it and at his very best he's an average singer. Hell, Prince has gotten showed up on his own songs with covers by other artist. (Chaka Khan and Melissa Morgan). And as far as an artist have a longer run, it means nothing to me if the quality doesn't meet up with the quantity. If there's quantity than quality than it ain't saying much. Look at how much Hendrix changed the course of Rock music in just like 4 years. An artist can spend years and years putting out music but if it doesn't have that top notch quality thing going on, it's not saying much of anything at all.
Rick James could sing ballads like it was nothing. Dream Maker, Hollywood, Summer Love, Ebony Eyes, Fire and Desire, Teardrops, etc. Rick James could belt out some ballads.
Come Get It!, Bustin Out of L Seven, Fire It Up, Garden of Love (this album is his Parade, he did it before Prince and better.) Street Songs is to Rick what Purple Rain is to Prince and in my opinion Street Songs is better. Throwin Down is overlooked as well as Cold Blooded.
Oh yeah and Rick James The Flag album was Sign O The Times before Sign O The Times. Rick was addressing issues and getting political with it before Prince. And Rick's Wonderful album was better than Prince Lovesexy, both of which came out in 88'.
