"Poll question: how much does your other half have to know about music?"

my gf at the moment doesnt know much about music. she likes 80s music, rihanna, whatevers in the charts really. im ok with this. i used to go out with an indie rock chick, which led to arguments in the car, but now i dont have any of those. i think its cool to go out with someone who likes some of the same stuff as you. but its not essential. or is it?

Poll result (35 votes)
more than me (1 votes)Vote
as much as me (4 votes)Vote
a little, as long as they know who sun ra is, thats fine (13 votes)Vote
i dont care if they only listen to rihanna (4 votes)Vote
they dont have to even like music (12 votes)Vote
they must hate music (1 votes)Vote

yeah, I've never dated a girl who was really INTO hip-hop. Actually, that's not true, but it hasn't been since the 90's. It would be a blessing if i could find a chick that did, but it's not enough to Seinfeld her because she don't

Being a music fan and music thinker, I think I'd have a hard time getting along with somebody who wasn't at least half as into music as me. Probably because we wouldn't have much to talk about.

I don't think it's the amount of knowledge one has — for me, it's more about how accepting the other person is of things they're not necessarily into.

unless they listen to some really horrible shit that I can't even tolerate on a purely diplomatic ( as in, "i'm in your car, so I'll listen to whatever you have playing") level.

My girlfriend probably doesn't know who Sun Ra is, but she's reasonably up on the mainstreamier side of indie rock. She's better than your typical pop listener, but she's not really into music the way I am, or even 25% of that.

My girl really isn't into music that much, she consumes top 40 and country and that's pretty much it. Shes knows the music I dig and she's always been open to it. For example we went to a funkadelic concert last year and she had a great time. Or this past weekend we were on a long car trip and I just bought Quakers and she didn't ask me to switch up the music until I listened to the album 2 times in a row.

Thinking about it I've been with my girl 4 years now, lived together for 2 years and we share EVERYTHING, except music and I think I like it that way.

mentality. I was once like that though. I couldn't stand current radio music(still don't care for it)but I'm done with cuttin' down peeps for their individual tastes.

My current GF listens to mainly contemparary gospel, maybe some female pop and rnb vocalists here and there(Beyonce, Rihanna, Whitney). She respects me as a music head and in return I respect her tastes. She's never against what I ask her to take a listen to. She appreciates the message of Dead Prez and a few others. That's really all you could ask for, someone that respects what you like, even though it may not be their style.

On the other hand, I'm actually glad she's not exactly a huge hip hop head, because 9 times out of 10, females that are really into rap have a real "bird mentality" and act like straight chicken-heads. If you don't believe me just talk to some of em'.

To answer it doesn't really matter to me. My wife knows who St Vincent is now and we can listen in the car together and that's all that matters.

I'm just about as much as a music snob as everyone else on this site.

But she doesn't have to know quite as much as I do. She has to love it though. It's always weird when I'm with a girl who isn't really into music.

And I like overlap in taste, but I've never been with a girl who has very similar taste as me. The one I'm with now has the closest, but our overlap is mostly in the electronic music we listen to. I think the only thing I avoid is excessive metal or country. They can be into either or both, but if it's all they listen to there's going to be a problem.

My wife knows a girl who is a dancer.. not skripper, modern dance... and the girl says she hates music and it doesn't do anything for her...

That is odd to me... but it makes sense because the girl doesn't like to hear anything but her voice when you talk to her.

My wife likes Bjork, Radiohead, De La and is a Prince fanatic. She used to hold down the door when we threw hip hop shows in college.

Looking back, I really don't know.
The best I can say is that I wasn't in a very good place in my life when I ended up with a girl who was like "I listen to the radio to see what other people are listening to," but she wasn't really into anything.

Then he met a 13-years-younger German babe with a knockout bod and great personality who had no idea who Eric Dolphy was. They've been happily married for three years already.

Practically speaking, it's a non-issue for me. I was impressed on our first date that my wife ID'd some of the stuff I played for her. And I was impressed that she was flexible and enjoyed a variety of shows I took her to. But we rarely play records around the house any more, so as a day to day concern it's lower than most other things on the priority list.

But definitely can't be a casual listener, music is just such a part of my live that we'd never connect. And some of the best moments I've had with the women I've been with have involved music. Either discussing it, making mixes for each other, going to concerts or just driving around with music on. Might change as I get older but as of now, definitely can't ONLY listen to what's on the radio.

is like the ultimate for me. Its kinda surreal to meet a girl who can go toe to toe and not miss a beat in conversation about it, but it's not necessary at all. I could just as easily date someone who liked bullshit radio, but as long as she appreciated what I liked and had an open mind to hear it (and me ramble on and on about it). I think thats all I need, someone who thinks that shit is at least somewhat interesting, cause thats like 50% of what I think about, so how the fuck are we gonna be cool unless she thinks it is.

Really all I ask is that she knows she's getting with someone who is heavy into music and she respects that, maybe even finds them interesting.

My girlfriend and I don't really like a lot of the same stuff (her two favorites off the top are Josh Groban and Deer Hunter haha), but she does eff with some of the more popular artists that I happen to also like such as Kanye and Jay.

And actually, she IS familiar with some of the underground stuff I like as her brother is a big hip-hop head. I wouldn't go as far as to say she likes it, but she got a kick out of ME getting a kick out of HER knowing who artists like Kendrick Lamar or El-P (for example) are.

She was like "I know some of this stuff you listen to!"

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

of a relationship

but for me it really isnt

don't get me wrong my wife loves music, but our tastes aren't very similar at all, and she doesn't have that nerdy need for it that i have, she loves to listen but not talk about it endlessly

It doesn't have to be the same shit I'm into but I can't date another chick that just hops in the car and turns on the radio. I'm not dealing with that again. She has to have her own little collection. She ain't gotta have thousands like me but a few hundred at least. Just no more MTV, BET, VH-1 & radio chicks. Never again.
