"chris Cornell, Jack White and John Mayer who has the better career?"

thinking about this for a second and all three have solo careers have been around for some time though cornell been around since the 90's, but if you were breaking it down by

them as and there track record ranking them 1-3 which order you got and why?

be it as a Guitar player

as a Singer

as a Arranger

as a overall Artist

as a Songwriter

as the most versatile

if you were betting whom do you think of the three will reach there peak and who do you think will underachieve??

Being the leader of a legendary band as far more legendary than anything Jack or John can or will ever do.

As you can guess, the talent level of Jack or John barely registers with me at all.

I'll take Elephant over it & while Jack White will likely never top that album he's been less annoying since then Cornell.

are you saying Jack White has ever been in a band that compares to Soundgarden? A band that has LP's/CD's to compare to Soundgarden's LP's/CD's?

If not, then the "everything else" don't apply.

"Elephant" and "White Blood Cells" are more than comparable to "Superunknown" and "Badmotorfinger" in my opinion I enjoy those more. It's personal preference as to which you prefer, but they are at a minimum in the same ball park.

what in the fuck are you smoking. if you're not a fan, that's all peace. but to pretend like Jack (AND MEG!) didn't give rock a swift kick in the nuts after grunge, nu-metal and pop-punk became EXTREMELY watered down by the beginning of 2000 you fooling yourself. The White Stripes (my personal favorite), Elephant, and White Blood Cells aren't great rock records? that's "poppycock". The Stripes opened a whole new lane for garage/blues rock that had been absent form the popular landscape since the late 70s and Jack himself was a part of good to great moments with the Rancantours and the Dead Weather.

Cornell is a legend, and has a great voice, but get over your nostalgia

and this is coming from a Mayer stan. John is easily the best on the axe...it's not even close. Chris has the rock god voice and was the frontman for an iconic band. He (along with Kim Thayil) pretty much wrote every song on those three albums. He's had the better career, IMO, and reached a wider variety of people. John is more of an "either you love him or can't stand him" type dude. I didn't mention Jack because I don't even think he factors in against these two guys.

Cornell had an AMAZING metal-voice but Soundgarden started to faulter when he got some sort of a singer-songwriter complex. Dude was essentially a mixture of Dio and COverdale vocally and "noone" want to hear those dudes go singer-songwriter...

As for John Mayer, dude has not had a single hit here in sweden and he strikes me as a distinclty american phenomenon, like Dave Matthews band or Hootie or whatever. However, they had a commercial running for his latest album where they called him the new Sting and that Eric Clapton had endorsed him as one of the most promising new artists. Comparisons to Sting and Clapton endorsements are the least I want to hear-is ANYONE more boring than Sting(shit, I even hate the Police) or-in the past 40 years- Clapton? I hate that type of "rock" so I doubt I would care about Mayer if those are the ones he sounds like. However, I've not heard enough to have an opinion...

Jack White seems to be the winner. He doesn't strike me as particularly talented, visionary or original but he does his thing and it works with people both in the underground *and* mainstream following him so I guess he gets my voice...

other than they are white. Like, it makes no sense at all. It's like "B.O.B., KRS-One and Pharrell... who's had the better career?"

I'm normally with ya Maxxx on your posts but this is not one that makes any sense.

For the record, on its face to answer your question even though I don't think it valid.... It goes Jack > Chris > John. But in typing that, it exposes the ridiculousness in the argument.

And the answers in this thread are retarded. Yes, John is an amazing player. Writes fantastic songs.... but he's like the Bryan Adams of contemporary music. And Chris is a guy who I love. Badmotorfinger is one of my favorite albums. But somewhere in the middle of Superunknown, he and Soundgarden lost me. And his solo discs and Audioslave seem like a lot of good ideas that were never fully flushed out. Where Jack.... not just musically but on the production tip has been doing the damn thing.

But again... they're in three completely different styles. Comparing them is essentially "What style of 'rock' do you like?"

Those are the ones imo where he shines most as a guitarist. After that he kinda lost IT imo, but his newest ones is pretty cool too. Elephant had some songs ( but it's where he lost me, tried liking the other albums but couldn't get into it.

I like Soundgarden as well (The early and the later stuff) but never became a diehard fan like a lot of ppl (Guess you had to be there). Outside of that ppl tell me his first solo album is amazing but still haven't heard. Audioslave and the last few solo albums never did it for me.

John Mayer is easy to dismiss but I think there's talent there, just personally not big on the execution. I liked where he was going with "Waiting For The World To Change" but he never seemed to fully go in that soul/rock direction which I think it a better lane than soft rock blues. I'm sure I'd appreciate him more live but haven't gotten around to it.

all of them have topped the charts and magazines before, so underachieve is irrelevant.

Jack is probably the most versatile

Cornell is The Voice

Mayer is the most technically gifted player

the one most likely to top the charts again is... Jack; he'll get the most cracks at it because he's the most adventurous of the 3; plus he's the only one who could go back to his original incarnation and kill in today's market.
