I know that the wrecka stow joke was a bit corny but come on now....was the fact that Prince was with a white woman the real reason why the mainstream audience flopped the under the cherry moon movie in the 80's?

Prince reportedly firing Mary Lambert during production and taking over the reigns himself didn't help matters, either

And neither did the delay in the release

And neither did the MTV-sponsored premiere which was held in Sheridan, Wyoming due to a contest winner

And, back in 1986, if you were trying to make a black-and-white screwball romantic tragicomedy, your name better had been David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch or Spike Lee. Because those were the only three ways you were getting away with that shit.

Prince tried the One two punch of Purple Rain and this film was poorly directed though it had a interesting story line and a good budget but Prince trying to re create a Morris Day persona after he help create it in the first place wasn't happening.

Prince was never much of an Actor and his films are corny and predictable. i mean its not like Prince is going to Portray a Cat name Jamual who works at a Payless.

the camera directing gave me a headache because he spun the camera around on a few scenes.

naw the film was weak in terms of the acting and the dialouge. but there was a interesting story to be told and a decent film to be made if you had a real director.

the music seemed dated and it sounded like prince was hitting pots and pans and anything to make a song. part Garage sounding and Park Lawrence Welk and it just lacked that edge IMO.

let a Ron O'Neal or a Calvin Lockheart be the main actor and get a Robert TOwensend to direct and this film might have worked as to being seen as Campy and Corny.

Prince and Jerome could have shot this film in California at OJ Simpson's or Quincy Jones's crib and chased all the Snow Bunnys they wanted for a whole lot cheaper.

why do you think that they did a 25th anniversary for the parade album? Anotherloverholenyohead is such a good pop song that the 12"extended version sounds better than the album version and Prince rips it on guitar everytime that he plays it during live shows. much love brother but I gotta take up for Prince on the soundtrack.

sounded like he was wearing too many of his influences openly and the songs felt like the kind of stuff Elvis Presley did to pass the time for his musical films which was alot of cute fluff stuff.

Anotherloverholenyohead" was cool in that he used the Groove from "Owner of a lonely Heart" and made it tight and the extended version was cool with more Bass and Horns, but its still not a must have song.

the Groove stands out because Parade wasn't a funky album at all and it felt corny to me.

truth is I have never cared for Prince soundtracks on a whole. he would bring that One money track and then you might get a couple of cool to good tracks and the rest was i dunno?

them Lawrence Welk strings he had in the background just didn't do much for me.

the only thing I liked on Parade was Kiss and mainly the long version, Girls and Boys was cool. Anotherloverholenyohead was cool to bump to,but it wasn't much until he did the long version IMO. Mountains I liked the longer version though i didn't like the drums much, sounded too Milky for my ears.

the rest of that album i didn't miss much at all then or now.

i said no to FLower Power era Prince.

I thought that he presented some really strong ideas and the execution thereof was interesting. I just feel like some of the tracks were too long or needed more variation. It's been a while, though, so I'll have to go dig it out to see what I think about it now.

In Hollywood, the moment you go black & white, it tends to lead to the discussion of:
1) arty
2) statement

Arguably, the movie lacked both. Most of the "mainstream" hated it not because he was with a white woman. If I remember right, most of the positive discussion about the movie had to do with her acting being far better than everything else. Again, Prince was a minor star in 1983, someone who managed to get a bit of MTV airplay in order to make him noticed by people "outside of his core audience", which for all intents and purposes means "white people". PURPLE RAIN made him a darling among "all". Everyone wanted a sequel or something similar. UNDER THE CHERRY MOON was neither. The movie was a flop and probably had one to two-week runs at theaters, if that. The music was far more successful, and PARADE remains one of my all time favorite Prince records.

The movie was decent, but probably could have been better. If there were alternate takes or unseen footage circulating, I'm sure fans would be creating fan-edits of it just to show how much better it could have been. If anything, it's better than GRAFFITI BRIDGE.

If other footage does exist, give it to Criterion and someone do a fanedit-style version of it.

At least not in any standard "mainstream" way.

It has all the makings of a "cult" film, but what really stands out to me is how distinctly Prince-ish it is, to the point that the whole movie feels like a strange inside joke. For the "in" folks, it did more than, by its own merits, it should have...

That being said, it's no graffiti bridge... UTCM can actually make one laugh, GB just sort of makes you cringe

I don't expect Oscar performances or Hitchcock type cinematography when I watch a film with Prince, Madonna or MJ in it...
