"Nas created "Daughters"....your fave MC didn't"
Thu Apr-26-12 03:30 PM by Basaglia

So, lemme check the scoreboard...

Album that captured the spirit of a generation of fatherless black men...

Single that captured the spirit of that same generation of black men who've now become fathers.

He make dat cinematic grittay and dat nigtrospection better than EVERYONE and you hate him for it.

I see you white hipster. You mad.

I see you corny bamma at the club tryna come up. You mad.

I see you dirtbag low-level "hustla"...you mad.

God's Son better. GOOD!

I like both songs but Nas' was one of the most reflective thing Nas has done in years (Which is saying a lot).

was basically a 25-year-old-kid singing a maudlin/saccharine acoustic ballad that really didn't feel in any way informed by life experience while this Nas song is actually going into it from a lived-in-personal-perspective while also extending it out to the universal.

a guy singing about how dad's and mom's should take care of their daughters because of the affect it will have on the child's relationships isn't something that takes a lot of life experience - just one crappy girlfriend

Sure Nas should question himself and try to be a better parent but it's not like his daughter is anywhere close to being a lost cause based on anything I've heard.

so the original premise isn't true there either

lyrics:

You know you're my cookie baby and you're too smart
I can see it in the lines of your school art
True heart
I mean courage
Expressed with care
Go on draw them superheroes with the curly hair
You're my daughter
My love
More than kin to me
This for you and the woman that you finna be
Tell that boy he's wrong
Girls are strong
Next time at show and tell play him our song
Tell your teacher I said princesses are evil
How they got all they money was they killed people
If somebody hits you
Hit 'em back
Then negotiate a peace contract
Life if a challenge and you gotta team up
If you play house pretend that the man clean up
You too busy with the other things you gotta do
If you start something, now
Remember, follow through
Later on you gon' blossom like a lotus
You'll get into boys and the boys gon' notice
It don't matter who you do it with
Just remember when I tell you baby you the shit
Handshakes are promises
Lies can spoil it
Words should be bond and seal
Wash you hands after using the toilet
Brush after every meal
And also

*Chorus*
Wear clean draws
Everyday
'cuz things may fall
The wrong way
You'll be lying there
Waiting' for the ambulance
And your underwear
Got holes and shit

Wear clean draws
Everyday
'cuz things may fall
The wrong way
You'll be lying there
Waiting' for the ambulance
And your underwear
Got holes and shit

Pam can I get a little scratch right here?
(yeeah)
Pam can I get a little scratch right here?
(oh yeah)
Pam can I get a little scratch right here?
(yeeah)
Pam can I get a little scratch right there?
(oh yeah)

My boogie baby now
The world ain't no fairy tale
And it's ran by some rich white scary males
To make it simple for you let's call 'em the bosses
They take money while the people take losses
Stole Black folds from Africa
To work for free
And we still barely get paid enough to eat
That's what I told you
I be saying in my vocals
That's why the woman got the gun on the logo
The star is the future
That we gon' create
Where nobody steal money from the things we make
The revolution takes time and space
But you as a woman gotta know you're place
That's in the front baby
I'm being blunt baby
If the get mad say it's they time of the month baby
Your face is just like the sun when it raises
Thank you for adding beauty to my phrases
Handshakes are promises
Lies can spoil it
Words should be bond and seal
Wash your hands after using the toilet
Brush after every meal
And also

*Chorus*
Wear clean draws
Everyday
'cuz things may fall
The wrong way
You'll be lying there
Waiting' for the ambulance
And your underwear
Got holes and shit

Wear clean draws
Everyday
'cuz things may fall
The wrong way
You'll be lying there
Waiting' for the ambulance
And your underwear
Got holes and shit

Pam can I get a little scratch right here?
(yeeah)
Pam can I get a little scratch right here?
(oh yeah)
Pam can I get a little scratch right here?
(yeeah)
Pam can I get a little scratch right there?
(oh yeah)

Clap yo hands
Clap yo hands
Clap yo hands
Clap yo hands
Clap yo hands
Clap yo hands

...i don't have a daughter, or intend to have children for at least 6 or so years, but the way he ended that verse after telling the tale throughout the rest...you can feel where nas is coming from. trying to watch his own daughter growing up when he knows she knows about his come-up, and all the other subtle issues...nas is on some real ish...really real.

The beat is pretty solid. A little repetitive but it definitely does the job. Nas is flowing and the lyrics aren't terrible. Not a fan of the hook, but it does the job.

The content is a little too personal for my liking lol, but it's a good song overall.

Possible answers (choose one):

A. Either you have been waiting patiently and religiously your entire lifetime to find THE "good" Nas song.

B. It takes you a 1000 songs to find something that takes the average rap fan 3 minutes to find.

C. You are an idiot. Nas doesn't have a 1000 songs.

D. You like saying 1 in 1000 a lot. You must be 1 in a million.

E. All the above.

I'm a grown ass man, homie....I don't do "plea coppage"...and I don't do the lazy "STAN" deflection...

I like the song...And my reasons are more for execution and content...

You chose to judge the song on some silly tabloid shit...

Like I said...this is what the Internet has done to the experience of listening to music....On one hand, it's opened up the access for everyone to be heard and make their points known at record time...

But it's also made some of the talk = anything but the music...

Pretty sad....But that's just the way it is...

He's upset that he has to explain to his
son that why he follows Nas' daughter on twitter

He's just a nervous parent

He's also hoping his son comes out a decent person

No guarantee, especially with his generally insecurity

Its a fair concern and I understand why he's posting
upset

I mean, Guiness is so upset right now that he's not
even in here

Nas really makes niggas question their realities and

Man...the shit is some old school songwriting...A writer speaking about his personal experiences that has been viewed in the fishbowl of fame...

But I don't think Nas or any other artists ever meant for grown men to post up tabloid articles to bolster an opinion on a song...

It's just suspect...

If you dislike the song, spell it out and explain it with your own words...Don't go by a teenagers Twitter page or Bossip...

Like I said, your views seem to be guided by something else...

You guys think this should be an album cut though??

I kinda hear it as a let me get this shit off my chest real quick type song... But maybe it goes with the theme of his album... I could see him cutting this before the release date though... 3 songs already out 3 months before the album drops... Nas needs to slow down the leaks or move up that release date...

Block is having a parental issue right now

Sort of a meltdown

Like what if his son grows up to disappoint him?

Block can deal with being a shitty producer

But this song made him realize that being an awful
parent + making shitty beats is going to be too much
to handle

That's what this is about

I understand so it don't bother me

No ID laced it.

Nas killed it, and the song should touch more than a few nerves to be honest. It's heart felt.

Good job Nas.

He puts up a song like this and suddenly everyone puts on their Nas's capes acting like he's Jesus again. Even though beneath the surface the rapping MUCH weaker then on The Don. You guys must have had the biggest hard on for AfterSchool specials growing up, it's the only way I can comprehend how ape shit you go when someone puts a song with 'meaning'*. Dude is admitting to his mistakes as a parent on a public platform. Beyond that, he's imaginative like we've come to expect:

"They say the coolest players and foulest heartbreakers in the world, God gets us back, he makes us have precious little girls."

>Even though
>beneath the surface the rapping MUCH weaker then on The Don.

It's not a rapping for rapping's sake song. No one got at Jay for coming so-so on "Glory." It's a heartfelt song.

Again, it's not the meaning. He's not offering us morals. Nas is looking at himself in an honest light. How often do you get that from people on that stage?

>Y'all must weep in the Hallmark card section of the drug

When ya'll get mad, all you can do is resort to personal insults.

THIS IS CLICHE'ED AS HELL. This is what I mean by bad writing.

That was pretty shitty also. Im trying to avoid the Jay comparison dead horse in 2012 but lets just say it's equally doo-doo. I do remember people giving it a 'Ehh, kinda cheezy aint it?'

That's what I mean about content versus actual musicality. Among mainstream larger then life acts, rarely, but it does happen..it's just not always good. Since we started with the comparisons when Jay does this ten outta ten times it S-U-C-K-S also, a la Kingdom Come. It takes certain type of MC to pull it off, it seems Nas isn't that dude. Funny enough lackluster skills Kanye, HE IS that dude to turn that kind of sentiment into a good song. Sentiment doesn't automatically equal good writing.

If it's SO cliche now it must have tons of songs throughout it's history dealing with this.

Like you haven't heard the 'male hoes end up having daughters' line a before? They use all all the time in the genderwarz posts in GD.

As far as the specific topic; it's gonna be tough to find any song as a direct & non-metaphorical indictment of a shitty father/daughter relationship even outside of hip-hop either cause it's brave or irresponsible for putting explicit personal biz in the street like that(I slide with the later). But someone like Em has been documenting his struggles with fatherhood & how it affects his daughter for over a decade now.

How come we ain't fall into the same trap with Odd Future? Most of the critics weren't on some 'THESE NIGGAS IS RAPPING ABOUT RAPE OMG!!!!'...we left that for white folks.

On here most of the replies were like" ya know, their beats are pretty simple and I think the rapping is weak."

I may like OF but I really can't say anything about the above because it's a valid opinion based on the music (because it's like, you know, a song). We giving Nas points cause he's a shitty father (and apparently an even shittier father for publicly shitting on his daughter without giving her a heads up).

I can't relate to the song and that's why I think it's just alright... I don't think it should make the album, that's for damn sure...

Or at least could look deeper past the sappy. It's just an excuse I see that gets used a lot, if the subject matter is deemed important a pass gets given on everything else, which is kind of ass backwards for music fans.

and maybe everyone just got caught up in it...

Personally, the song to me is just saying Nas is a bad parent... This song doesn't change that... Probably gonna fuck with his daughter's head...

And yeah, people should be able to get past the subject matter and judge the song on the quality... My cousin has 2 daughters and I was gonna send him a link to it, but then I thought, "This really isn't that good of a song... I doubt he would think it is too..."

It's kinda funny because it's such a personal, "let me get this shit off my chest" type of song, I find the most relatable part of it to be the course...

No, but it's kind of the reason why people like art.

People hear or see something that resonates with something deep inside of them (a shared desire, need or experience) and they're drawn to it.

As far as subject matter vs. top quality rhyming, personally speaking I don't need to look for top quality rhyming on every song. Like 2pac I can appreciate and enjoy what he's talking about without wondering if that was the cleverest way to put it. Sometimes pure honesty and reflectiveness goes along way. You seem to find the song is corny, you're welcome to think that. But other ppl look for rappers to just open up, whether they come off as hypocritical, corny or self-righteous at least I can relate to their emotions. I can't always relate to crazy flows or complex rhyme schemes, hence why a lot of rappers who have skills for days are boring after 2 or 3 songs. They have no personality

See, I think the beat is on the cornier side (when Nasty/The Don did a good job of serving two masters...boom bap/club, this imho serves none).
And I just hear Nas talking a poem about what a shitty father he is, there's none of that imagery with 'I Gave You Power' or '2nd Childhood'. You could argue the earnestness makes it better, but imho it's just kind of lazy.

I know some ppl shitted on The Don but loved it myself. As far as not having the imagery as those other songs, sure I can agree with that. But at the same time I love many Nas songs that don't have that but are like you said are on the honest/earnest side like "Last Real N*gga Alive", "You're Da Man" or "Strong Will Continue".

i don't like this 'you guys' business.
the don and the previous single got just as much love and they don't have a 'message'
so i don't understand where this is coming from

The OP introduced the song like it will change a generation... You got people saying this is the first Nas song they've liked in 10 years... People are acting like dude really reinvented the wheel here... Truth is, Nasty and The Don are better songs... But this song has really struck a cord with people... at least the people on OKP...

The niggas who are on here hating wouldn't be able to make a song as "Shitty" and "Uninspired" as this if they had a 100 lifetimes to pull it off. You can speak on Nas track record as an artist, but the fact is....he's a bonafide LEGEND in his field. You niggas aint legendary at what you do...nobody comes to your job and compliments you on how well you stock the shelves or how effortlessly you flip burgers...because your shits a non factor. Is this the place where rap dreams come to die and hate on niggas who didn't?

but I agree with MOST of what you're saying...

him being a "LEGEND" shouldn't be factor when judging the quality of a single song though...

Because when you say that, you're basically saying that if you aren't a legend in your field. What does that have to do with being able to appreciate a song, if these people can appreciate other music a lot?

If people don't like the song or don't like Nas, that's their prerogative. But that response is usually what people use to 1) defend fanboy status, or 2) defend their own shitty material when they don't want to hear feedback about people not liking it.

those other two singles received GREAT feed back though
yall need to stop arguing with trolls
unless yall trolling too lol

most nas fans just want nas to be nas and so far he's been doing that with the singles for this album with one misstep (which thankfully won't be on the album; i'm talking about black girl lost 2)

But the OP put it out there like it's a game changer. People give Nas begrudging props for those two, this one got a post on its own proclaiming it's greatness right off the bat.

And props to Nas for admitting his wrongs...you guys who are saying he's a bad father must not know anything about adolescents these days...I've working with teenagers, boys and girls, for the past 7 years and you have to watch their every move, especially the girls...I'm terrified to have a teenage daughter knowing the shit she could get into...with so many social media outlets its almost impossible to completely monitor them..slumber parties could turn disastrous ....
