"How will Kanye handle falling off?"

First point, let's agree that he will eventually fall off at some point. Everyone does. If it can happen to Prince it will happen to you. so its just a matter of when (anyone willing to wager when? 2 years? 5years? Already?).

Kanye, doesn't strike me as the kind of dude who will be okay with having to fall back and play supporter for some young hotshot producer.

Will he disappear like Sly Stone? Flame out in a spectacular fashion? or am I wrong and dude will play the humble and just keep working just on a much smaller scale like a Pete Rock?

In other words, what will Kanye's career look like in 10-15 years?

kinda speaks to what you are asking

he's kinda positioning himself to be aligned with both timeless 'real hip hop' legends/vets with q-tip, mos def, common...but also trying to stay relevant to the current market with 2chainz

he might be able to just continue balancing it...i don't think he's necessarily going to die out in the near future. as hated as he is, too many people love him too much

I've always felt that part of the reason Kanye aligns himself with Jay is to have a slice of sanity & stability. If not for that I would have leaned towards the "flame out spectacularly" option.

I know some white folks who straight up and down hate Kanye and think he's racist, and after that Taylor swift BS he did the smart thing and shut the fuck up for a while. That situation right there to me was him falling off, he's fallen, Obama dissed you man.

but then came MBDTF, I really don't see that Taylor swift crap as falling off, but to umm. . . yeah I'll say it, White America, he fell off and had to earn his way back with all that silly ass apologizing and what not.

But dude has a fan base, some of which are white folks who never thought he was racist, a jerk, or whatever.

Imo, kanye will be relevant long after artists like weezy, ross, big sean and drake have dropped off the radar.

I don't think failure (which is how he sees falling off) is something he'll be able to deal with.

When his songs don't chart, and celebrity hoes don't want him, and the next gen that he half-ass promotes don't want nothing to do with him...I think he'll go nuts.

He should go full circle and be a producer in the vein of Pete & Primo, where he consistently makes good records and a hit from time to time...but Ye doesn't seem like he would be happy getting paid in the background.

Dude wants to be as big a MICHAEL JACKSON....even Mike couldn't handle that fall...how will ye'?

and how long you can maintain success in this genre.

Jay and other 90's rappers are changing shit and are gonna be able to stay relevant into their 40's and probably beyond. It's not just a young guy's game anymore. "Falling off" or "retirement" is no longer an inevitability.

I could see him possibly making some bullshit in the future on some Andre 3000 shit, but I don't see him losing his popularity.

arguably on a larger scale.
no one is really REALLY checking for pharrell records lately (i say that with all due respect).
but he is known internationally as a taste maker, and well respected in the realm of street wear fashion. Generally, an all around great guy to have around. I think he knows that his time in the pop spotlight has probably passed, but he appears to have comfortably moved on to other things.

i don't see why kanye's trajectory should be any different.
people are harping a bit too much on his ego. as much as you talk trash about yeezy, it's not like he goes on Sly Stone-esque benders...missing shows haphazardly and saying fuck the world. dude cares about his output and how he is perceived.

overrated and media driven more than actual talent.

any turkey can throw beats and rap like him, however real talent to write, produce and sing like the cats in my rotation takes actual talent and Kayne is a gimmick and a Jive sucker turkey.

With Kim in the mix, she'll push him to be in LA, and that means Hollywood. (after he producers her vanity single)

When that happens, He'll prolly Jay Z the music until all he can do is Ice Cube it.

But is he gonna Mos Def the movies, or Timberlake it?
That's the question to me. He certainly won't be a Heide Slimane much less a Jean Paul Gautier, so he's going to have to jump into the movies.

If he Timberlakes it, his ego will be able to take the hit of his music career being essentially dead. But Justin ain't no Sean Connery.

Worst Case scenario is Common Sense though.
- acting career goes nowhere
- music ain't hitting like it used to

I'd love for him to Ashton Kutcher the game though. Make his coins in the sexy industries and then parlay that into Silicon Valley venture capital.

I hear talk of him being the next hip-hop mogul but nothing abut him so far that's something he can do. How is dude making money outside of music? Yeah he is into fashion but when have you seen anyone rocking any Kanye gear? he definitely isn't working on a sean jean or rocawear type empire

I remember some hard feelings between him and jay-z because he wanted to spend more money on the WTT tour because his mentality is that you can't put a price on Art. I think that mentality is going to be his economic downfall.

what about him makes you think he isn't savvy?

He made the bald headed chick famous and the KK pr stunt will keep him on mag covers for the next year.

Not trying to be rude but I heard he runs with a real tender crowd and they stay in power circles when it comes to fashion and entertainment.

As far as throwing money at the WTT tour.. what's wrong with investing in yourself? He could probably write most of that stuff off anyways?

I wouldn't be surprised Jay argued to keep it on the cheap because Jay isn't about the visuals or art. He is content walking back and forth and rhyming while Kanye wants to put on an epic show.

Yeah but has he turned any of that into real money? By this point in their careers jay, puff and 50 cent had real money generating businesses outside of music (i.e., popular clothing lines). Even Kanye's foray into fashion hasn't really produced anything that you can point to that makes him real money.

writing it off is still a loss.

>I wouldn't be surprised Jay argued to keep it on the cheap
>because Jay isn't about the visuals or art. He is content
>walking back and forth and rhyming while Kanye wants to put on
>an epic show.

that's my point. Kanye is willing to do an epic tour even if it loses money. Moguls don't think that way.

who said anything about Kanye being a mogul? Kanye doesn't have to make 400 Mill to be successful or relevant.

pretty quick.

As far as other business ventures he licenses his music to a lot of films & shows, he owns a bunch of Fatburgers restaurants in Chicago, he started a design think tank DONDA, he invested in turntable.fm, he invested in GURU and a few other things. There maybe better hip hop business people but he's definitely business savvy.

He's keeping Jay-Z's name in everybody's mouth. Lets be honest, where would Jay's career be right now if not for Kanye's influence over the past decade plus? Watch The Throne was huge, I don't even know what kind of numbers it did but I think its impact was much higher than the sales figures would show.

He's doing a good job of not saturating the market, and his last 2 projects have both been immensely well received critically and commercially.

I mean, can you name a bigger star in music right now not named Bieber or Gaga?

If he continues like this, and drops about 1 project every 1.5-2 years his career will keep going as long as he wants it to. I don't envision him falling off.

Look at Nas, he's still one of the biggest names in hip-hop even though the quality of his albums has been erratic and he hasn't put out many hits in the past 10 years. And although Nas is a better rapper than Kanye, Kanye is 100 times better as an ARTIST. He's creative as fuck, he'll continue to drop these projects that are game changers every 2 years.

I could see him getting into movie scores, maybe directing or producing. I can't picture him acting. He's kind of a spazz in front of cameras. He's got that DONDA thing going and who knows what will come of that.

Even if he does kind of "flame out" eventually that will only keep him more relevant. Kanye's name was never more prevalent than it was after the Taylor Swift incident.

Madonna just did the halftime show at the SuperBowl and she hasn't made a decent song in yeaaaars. Once you reach a certain level of stardom you don't really "fall off," you just kind of plateau, and you can choose to play the back or keep shoving yourself down people's throats. Kanye has kept a nice balance of keeping his name out there, but not making people get sick of him.

I guess also you need to define "fall off." Do you mean musically? Or just losing your relevance in the public eye? They're kind of interconnected, but some artists continue making great music but their stardom declines. I don't see Kanye's stardom declining as long as he chooses to keep being a star.

It would be interesting to see him kind of disappear after a while like Sly Stone though, especially if he drops about 4-5 more critically acclaimed albums and then just goes off the grid. It would make him kind of a folk hero.

Sorry for the long rambling ass post.

TL;DR

same vein as acts out now. he's made himself a "brand". he's aligned his career up to do whatever he wants, however he wants (and however long he wants to), and he'll always have a gang of people following suit. No rapper today, artistically, is doing what he's doing. he's too multifaceted to "fall off" like a jarule or nelly or 50 cent. Too many people rely on Kanye for their own careers. He's a goldmine within his self. he's kinda setting his career up perfectly so when it is all said and done it'll be collective of things ppl can look back on & put him on that "legendary" status of the first rapper to try to expand the vision of hip-hip. which is why I think his career will be as long as he wants it to be. Sonically, I'll say Kanye West is still on "break" from his home base of music...he still has leverage to really come back & drop some next level stuff if he wants to...but he's too busy managing other ppls careers...he's regarded to highly to just "fall off". and WTT is a huge record.....

I think the folks who said he would go into non-music stuff were right. And the people who said he will go crazy as well were right.

even if the stuff he's receiving public attention for isn't exactly positive.

It's always going to be news when he puts out a new album

I can't remember the last hit he put out under his own name, but he's produced stuff for other people that's still be successful

Morbidly enough at this point dying might be the only thing that will soften the general public's opinion of him
