"Who Really Are The *All-Time Great* HipHop Groups?"

The word *great* is all too often used loosely when we're talking abt artists and the music they create and HipHop ain't exempt. Now, as far as I'm concerned there are only a handful of groups that {w/o question} deserve the title of great and they are as follows...

-Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five
-Sugar Hill Gang
-DMC
-Beastie Boyz
-PE
-NWA
-KAST
-EPMD
-WU-TANG
-TRIBE
-WHODINI
-SALT & PEPPA
-BONE THUGS
-NAUGHTY BY NATURE
-UGK?

and maybe a few others I can't think of at the moment

but

take a group like Goodie Mob and Das EFX, for instance, will they be remembered as two of the GREATEST HipHop bands of all time? I've heard many used that adjective in reference to both. Me, personally, I think both were/are very good groups and were amongst the best HipHop groups of their era

but

are they really on the same level as NWA?

In sports there are great players then there are GREAT PLAYERS. Patrick Ewing by all measures was a great player...but not great in the same sense as Kareem Adul Jabbar.

Roger Craig was a great NFL running back...but he wasn't in the same stratosphere of greatness as Jim Brown or Walter Payton.

So I want to know how does the Lesson categorize HipHop groups vis-a-vis their greatness?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to name groups and you tell me who deserves the title of 'great'...and if you think they are/were a great group then make your case for said group.

-Goodie Mob?
-The Roots? (I say they're great but I'm not sure how history will view them)
-The Pharcyde?
-Dela Soul?
-The Fugees?
-The Black Eyes Peas?
-The Geto Boys?
-The Fat Boys?
-The Jungle Brothers?
-Too Live Crew
-Cash Money?
-Das Ex?
-The Fu schnickens?
-Mobb Deep?
-Cypress Hill?
-The Lox?
-Slum Village?
-Little Brother
-Brand Nubian?
-Jurassic Five?
-Digable Planet?
-X-Clan?
-Digital Underground?
-Black Sheep?

i think in normal cases i'd agree, but the group gangstarr was specifically guru and premier, not one or the other. the other examples were apt (even though Rakim did stuff without Eric B later on) because those producers were doing ALL the tracks, whereas most groups and artists, even if they have a MAIN producer, will have several other producers putting in work.

I'd be lying if I said that Dela's legacy and impact exceeds that of Bone...

Bone Thugs were huge and had some huge and memorable records.

sonically, Dela was ALWAYS consistent and Pos has always been one of my all time fav MCs

but

I don't know if they're more deserving of being called 'great' than BTH? maybe its just my personal bias...which is why I asked that yall make an argument for a group you think were great.

history will see them as greats, more than the present has.

Slum Village and Digable Planets

are both all time greats, as far as the music they produced. history won't know then as greats, since they didn't leave much of a "legacy" (or whatever bullshit you guys are coming up with). Limited output from them, but from their best work, only Tribe,Wu and Kast (out of who you had listed) have perhaps made better music.
