of the badboy roster. There is no denying his talent, but you know as well as I do that talent don't mean much of shit in the music buisness. I think he may have held on to about 00-01, but beyond that and seeing how hard he rode with and for puff, he would've been gone like a dodo bird.

This isn't to say Jay-Z would not have become a megastar, but that KONY shit was on lock for B.I.G.

I'm not saying he would've been a mogul (though he likely would have, he signed Kim and played a part in discovering Cam'ron. He had Undeas with Un)

If we're talking about music, B.I.G. PERFECTED the now tired cliche of club song/girl song/street song formula, and did everyone of them them effortless and naturally.

I see no reason to think his reign would've ended.

Biggie had the ability to adapt to his surroundings and rap over just about any style beat. He would have been fine.

Not to mention, he was already looking to break off from Bad Boy and run shit on his own, which would have been better for him.

I mean there is no real way of knowing what would have actually happened. I think it would have been great for him to break away, I just think he wouldn't have been very successful doing so just looking at his boss's track record.

No snark, but why did you start this discussion if, when someone disagrees, you say "well, we don't know what would've actually happened"?

Doesn't that sort of go without saying?

There is no "more than likely."

Pac did that. See: I Get Around/Keep Ye Head Up/ Holla If Ya Hear Me.

People forget Pac f*cking mentored Big.

Or don't want to admit it.

When Pac accused Big of biting, it wasnt his delivery, etc- it was his formula.

I agree that typically "talent" doesn't equal "longevity." In fact, rarely does it.

But, what DOES equal longevity is talent crossed with personality/"swag." Biggie had personality in spades. He had more personality than just about everyone and for that alone (not even taking into account his insane talent) he would've lasted.

If Jay can last with 3/4 the talent of Biggie, just based on his persistence, Biggie would have too.

He may have had personallity in his RHYMES, but outside of it he just came off as a husky, shy and humble dude. You kinda need both to have longevity, or maybe just the latter. If you're going by personality overall, Craig Mack had way more than Biggie.

Snoop came off humble and shy at first as well and look what happened with him. I have no reason to believe Biggie wouldn't have gone the same way.

He put out all that music to hurry and get off that contract with Suge. However, a triple CD sound like a bit much to succeed with as one complete album. Name the last triple CD that actually did well and I will shut up.

THE commish together and Jay and Cam was suppoused to be in the same group how funny is that now

but knowing what we know about Jay that dude was going to make it and was going to do whatever it took it to make it and be number 1.

Now they might have co-existed but Big already said Jay was better than him and he was the only guy he feared rapping beside it.

It might have come to a head it seem like everybody in NY was throiwng subiminals and didn't like each other during that time They might have come to a head.

I would have like to see how Biggie took to Mase too tho.

If it was trimmed down to a single LP he could have held on. The double LP though would have required a *REALLY* strong follow up, IMHO.

I could be wrong but seems far-fetched that the decision of single disc vs double disc was made in that time. But he would definitely need a strong follow-up to that album b/c I think he would have had more of a IWW reaction if he didn't die.

Jay-Z success is a direct result of the void left by BIG. That would suggests that BIG could have achieved all of the music success that Jay-Z experience.

Puff has producer credits for both Kim and MJB

not to mention signing MJB to Uptown

are you sayin it's wrong to associate those 2 with Bad Boy?

I'm takin it as Puff was instrumental in their careers

if you want to get literal

name names

Jada was part of the LOX, which was on Bad Boy...right?

Puff just put out an album that got alot of play

Faith
Mase
112
Black Rob

all put out projects after 2000-01

my question is

is this dude saying BIG would have just disappeared like Craig Mack

or Total?

There is a difference between being associated and being on the label like you said. I was just clarifying.

Anyway, look all the examples you mentioned who were actually on bad boy. Sure they had a few hit records but NONE have had long careers.
If Big stayed on bad boy I don't see why he wouldn't meet the same fate.

that wasn't actually stated in the OP

what was specifically stated

was that after 00-01 he would have been gone

given the artists listed above that were on bad boy at one point in time

how many were gone after 00-01

Craig Mack

and Total

cats like Loon and Young Joc were still gettin work after 00-01

do ya'll remember Gorilla Zoe?

Biggie
- jacked the west coast steez for biggie
- did the puff formula for one more chance rmx
- kept a modicum of street cred with Who shot Ya
- continues with the standard Puffy formula for lp 2

1) Would Jay Z still have happened?

I say a strong maybe. The current zeitgeist is that
a) hip hop needs and east coast rapper (it doesn't, as we see in 2012)
b) Jay filled those shoes

Jay was sharp enough to jump on the trend of the hot producer and have a new sound every single outing. Neptunes would still happen. Jay and Neptunes. Jay and Just Blaze...Jay and Kanye would have still happened. And Kanye still happens in this timeline as well.

Would Biggie/Puffy have been smart enough to do that? I dunno. Puff didn't.

2) How would Biggie handle the South?
- he'd do cameos, sure
- he's done enough R&B/funk joints
- 50 Cent did well by aping "southernisms"

Would Biggie change his flow, ala Notorious Thugs, to get them South dollars?

I have a feeling he wouldn't.

He would have finished with Bad Boy and prob. fleshed out the "Commission" concept with him and Jay rockin' together which would/could have possibly led to him and Jay on some Label type stuff once Jay and Dame split(although neither would prob. want a partner after leaving their respective situations. so prob. not but they'd def. record together)...

or

Puffy is desperate enough to give him half ownership in the company to stay.

In which case,
-he's callin' the shots on his own solo projects
-he's still force feeding Junior Mafia to us(just like Jay has done Bleek)
-he's signing younger talent to develop which assist in helping to keep him relevant longer (because he has the bridge to the younger audience)

You have to remember that Big wasn't just any other rapper. He was a very nimble artist who could easily being doing features today with Drake, Wayne and whoever else is popular.

I mean, his style of rhyme, his content...no prob. in 2012.

But the real question is, would Rap in 2012 be where it is today(good or bad) had Big never died?

peace

it would be realistic to expect he woulda had a better career arc than Nas but I think he woulda had some lows

hip hop is fickle the always lookin for the next new neeyah

he had the kind of skills that he would have slayed Jay Z and Nas combines. thing is nobody has truly ran the East since he passed, he had it on a bigger than life scale.

how long did it take the Camal to get some real juice? Biggie grabbed it by the throat back when hip hop was in its Prime and Peak era and also when the compeptition was far more stronger.

Biggie would have stayed nice. Biggie would have kept up easily with Snoop and ran Lil Wayne and Rick Ross off the road sideways.

are you kidding me as long as cats get to hang around nowadays compared to when Biggie was out, Biggie would be on album number 12 or so now still getting Stats and Jewlery because he could write.

lets not forget Undeas records and his spin off Lil Kim and Junior Mafia. Biggie had vision as well. no doubt Biggie would have been straight.

Reasons:

1- He admits he would have done ANYTHING Puff told him to.
2- Mo Money Mo Problems aka the Shiny Suit song....was HIS SONG!
3- Throw you Rollie in the sky was HIS VERSE.
4- Puff and Mase were HIS BOYS.

I know revisionist history wants to deny that...but when you actually face facts you realize it's true.

There's also the issue that he would have eventually been forced to take his health seriously. Skinny BIG wouldn't resonate with nobody.

and both were good.
but i remember when life after death came out ppl were hating saying it wasn't as good as ready to die and he went commercial with mo money mo problems etc
so who knows the direction bad boy would have went if he stayed alive
late 90s/early 2000s were still about bling and creating trends tho so i'm assuming he would have been aight
he just would have had a ton of songs that ppl on here thought were shitty. like a collab with the neptunes over a bee gees remake or something like that
