""irrelevant": isn't calling malachi wack like calling guru wack?"
Tue Apr-24-12 07:07 AM by david bammer

i mean since he so obviously ghostwrote his rhymes on the first album.

personally, i always thought malachi was flava but an acquired taste.
you really would have had to have been a fan of hip-hop in the 80's to really appreciate that simple one syllable rhyming style.
but guru often rapped like that - even in the 90's too.

so anyway when "hiphop journalists" and the disciples of their opinions on the internet declared it acceptable to consider malachi "one of the wackest rappers of all-time" in the mid 00's - wasn't this like an indirect diss to guru?

Are you old enough to remember that when Jazzmatazz dropped? Guru had a fanbase outside of Gangstarr just like Premier did.

is irrelevant(lulz) to me.

Guru is the definition of a "basic" MC to me, he's /just/ good enough to not turn me off.

I was 2 mo's. old when Vol 1 was released, so no.
Have I listened to it? yes.
Haven't listened to it since that first spin.

Everyone has their own specific tastes, different MC's connect with different demographics. What I find bothersome is when kids try to rewrite history and pretend as if Guru was just along for the ride. Anyone who had been listening to Gangstarr since their inception would know that this wasn't the case. Guru established himself inside and outside of Gangstarr. Yes Primo had more notoriety but during his heyday Guru was able to connect with a fairly large group of people on his own. He didn't need intricate rhyme schemes to hold our attention. We were drawn in by his voice, his personality, and the subject matter of his rhymes.

to me, Guru was just along for the ride.

to me, when I post I'm not trying to rewrite history I'm not posting in absolutes.

My word is not law sir, when I said Premo was carrying Guru; I meant in my eyes I wasn't trying to speak for you or any of Gangstarr's 90's fans.

I don't know how you got that I was trying to "rewrite history" you'd have to be really arrogant to try and misrepresent history you weren't around to experience.

I'm not that arrogant sir.

When I post and say things they are imo, the way I see them.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, like I said before idc what people though of Guru in 91', I was just saying it the way I see it.

because the real critique about Malachi is that he had an ILL voice and the building blocks of a good delivery, but it just came out sloppy and horrible. like even if he was being ghosted, it didn't sound like he was into whatever he was saying.

unlike a Dr. Dre, who we all know at this point was ghosted, but managed to sound like a guy who actually wanted to rap (he was on record saying he hated the way he sounded despite this). Or an Eazy-E even. these dudes had character on the mic.

Lil Dap's rhymes were elementary but he actually sounded like he was into rapping.

Guru could come with some shit that sounded weak on paper but when he delivered them they had feeling.

you can extend this to just about every rapper that "sucks" from a technical perspective but is popular (except Silkk The Shocker... that motherfucker needs to know the concept of "pocket", even Lil B sounds more in-tune than that dude)

I once had a little hobby/project I was working on in the late '90s/early '00s that basically sought to parody Livin' Proof, only the "Malachi" I was ghosting was supposed to have a much better delivery than the actual "Malachi".

again, before t la rock that is on par with how just about every "great" rapper of the era rapped.

i don't know how people who profess to be "hiphop" fans can shit on malachi and then in the same breathe not diss stuff like mc shan's "the bridge" for almost the exact same reasoning...

...oh wait. yes i do. lol.

malachi wasn't jalil status. he didn't actually ruin any tracks.
dude was just using an outdated style.

he actually has quite a few quotable lines from that one LP alone.

it's funny how you mention MC Shan, because that's how I used to defend Malachi's rhyming. His actual "introduction" on Hard To Earn was actually dope and I won't hear other wise.

and I would agree, except for one or two tracks -- titles escape me without having to review, but it was that line that ended in "Bugs Bunny" that's an example of what I'm talking about.

that guy is one of the all-time greats at getting inside a beat and not coming out of it until the song is over
he doesn't get enough credit for that in my opinion
but yeah Jalil was a much better writer than a rapper

Primo said on that Combat Jack podcast a couple weeks ago that Malachi had pretty much no interest in rapping and they almost had to force him into the booth.

Never seen anything that would indicate Guru was writing for him as well. In any case there's much more to emceeing beyond what you write on paper, this post is weak.

Listen to the flow in 2006 he's still sounded like Malachi's ghostwriter.

when there are so many rappers with worse voices?

he's considered the wackest because some journalist told you it and you listened and said - hey yeah wait a minute... he IS wack.

meanwhile, too short didn't even rap on beat until like 7 years into his career. lol.

or Kool Chuck (i.e. the dude I posted with that "Dee-boed Studio Time" voice/rap style)

I think he needed to believe in himself more as a rapper. He could have easily gotten away with an "old style" if not from that. I remember Premier saying something to that effect when interviewed.
