"Was R Kelly's more outrageous work tongue-in-cheek?"
Mon Apr-23-12 11:25 AM by Buddy_Gilapagos

I always wondered if R Kelly was not that bright (though admittedly a musical genius) or had a very sly sense of humor with songs like "You remind me of my jeep" or "half on a baby". I think by the time "Trapped in the Closet" part 23 came out I was convinced that R Kelly was in on the joke. I think I was further convinced by the time he released "Love Letters" that dude knew full and well how to write touching heartfelt lyrics but enjoyed sticking his thumb in the eye of traditionalists with his more outrageous song lyrics.

So is there a consensus? Was Kells purposely being silly when he sang "We will take a trip to Uranus" or did dude think he was writing serious lyrics when he wrote Black Planet?

not on a light level, and def not on a beck-kind of level either. hes a pretty straight kinda lyric writer.

people are always looking for irony, but kellz isnt that knowing. though some of his lyrics are obviously funny. he just might go a bit too far into the ridiculous zone. i think he reckons hes a bit of a comedian sometimes.

but he tries to be clever with it, which is kind of his weak spot.

morris day or millie jackson knew they were being funny, they were on that line between straight and knowing. i think kellz thinks hes being clever or hes trying to be high concept or whatever, its just that his humour isnt that sophisticated so it ends up sort of like an R&B version of inception.

but what he does well is silly, rather than ironic.

He was definitely a foil for Prince. He was a great artist who definitely knew what he was doing when he was up to his shenanigans. He had a well rehearsed act and everything was planned, from the mirror to Jerome.

i think a lot of people who dont like R&B dont totally get that. that thing where its on the line between irony (in the old fashioned sense, not the snide hipster sense) and serious. it lets you get away with certain lyrics - its a sort of showmanship. like when dangelo does shit damn MF and intros it in quite a theatrical kind of way. i dunno if kellz does that in the same way, he does it straighter, prob cos acting too 'entertainer' ish isnt very cool nowadays, so you get songs like the zoo, which has animal noises and funny lyrics, but he sings it like its a normal seduction ballad lol.

Jones this weekend and I haven't heard it in a minute and I was cracking up. The speech at the end was very much played up for laughs.

I just don't get that impression from R. Kelly. He just comes off as an unsophisticated boob. That walking in the rain song was just genius. In the one sense he's completely pissed off at the chick but then it's like fuck it I'm gonna have some fun at her expense and make some coin off the experience. I feel like whenever I laugh at an R. Kelly song I never really get the impression he is in on the joke.

Y'all kill me with this in on the joke stuff. Who cares. He was being creative and he can be silly and he can be serious. one thing for sure is the man's career is no joke. i thought those songs were fun, and sure he's a mad genius at times but thats what you get when you have someone who is very creative. but i think its so corny and snobby "are we laughing at him or with him" , its so judgemental and critical, either you like sex planet or not, but i'm a believer in does it sound good or not? all those extra reasons yll come up with for liking or disliking music are wack

but only in a certain context. Bullshittin @ the bar, barbershop...but if you really wanted to get right and exact on this that and a third, you'd find him a bit wanting.

Still, the people love him.

The people have always loved that character, a little clever, but not too clever.

silly, funny, goofy, comical and outragious and it all works.

his playbook ain;t no joke. he is textbook oldd school R&B with a modern day flip and he doesn't limit his outlook and vision with said discussion.

Kellz is like Rev Ike meets Richard Pryor and a touch of Nipsey Russell in there. i get it and its cool because it works.

those songs worked in there context thing is Kellz has Money tracks and then he can hit you with this or that and he knows it.

you can only do that though if you got the main meal in order.
