"Final performance on Arsenio Hall"
Fri Apr-20-12 08:30 PM by forgivenphoenix

http://youtu.be/-YU9sefKFrw

I had never seen this before. I was hyped to see everyone in it, although i would have liked to see more verses from the Wu and it was kinda disappointing to hear Tip just do his verse from Sucka N*gga.

Ghost was killin it with the Grey Goose bottle on stage.

RIP Guru

And KRS always owns these spots, you can always hear every word he's saying & it's always relevant to what's happening in that moment.

cheers for that.

There was another vhs capture floating around youtube that I've posted here a couple times but this is much better.

I remember watching and recording that episode. I had a vcr tape full of my favorite videos and tons of arsenio musical guest clips. He always had the best sound for bands too. There CANNOT be a more definitive hip hop performance on tv ever. Interesting to note how much more west indian influences had on emcees back then. Maybe modern hip hop needs another dose of that?????

I made a post awhile back of links for Arsenio hip hop spots. Can't find it. Trying to remake it now.....

Performance was EPIC - I was buggin out

but sadly it marked the end of the Arsenio's Show, which among other things, was a hip hop beacon late 80's to early 90's.

and plus, most new rappers...

-are scared to rap without a script
-see no value in having a real cypha
-are pretty much built with plastic parts

>You can't get anything close to this now, that's for sure.

is so excellent..even with cats using verses, the Wu cats being hood and outlandish, etc. I mean...BET tries to make cats do stuff like this at the awards with the cyphers, but that stuff is hella rehearsed and segregated. And some cats were allegedly doing mad takes. And a dude who shoulda murked like Rawse didn't even really go in.

I bet something like this around 2001 or so with a wishlist from around that time would've been ill as shit too. I'm talking like Nas, Thought, Common, Jay, Mos, Kweli, Bun B, Snoop, Eminem, Outkast, etc. All those cats prolly have some serious cypher experience.

Now...there's a gang of rappers out now who I foolishly believe are capable of doing something that would be nice..but yeah..cats is scared to be compared and they'd wanna do a million takes, take a month to come up with their verse, argue to get more bars, etc, etc.

But I'd love to catch Jay Elec (yeah...like he still raps), Curren$y, Aubrey, Kanye, Q-Tip, Jay, Nas, Comm, Thought, Mos, Wayne, Bun, Dre 3k, Big Boi, TI, 2Chainz (yes...Tity Boi..he's on everything else), Rawse, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop, Game, Ghost, Rae, Prodigy, and...somebody even more random...Cee-Lo (!) tasked to go in on some simple loop up for some reason...

The West-Coast Rap All Stars doing All In The Same Gang on this show (and yes, there was Humpty Hump)... and it was CRAZY. You can't get anything like this on TV anymore. Nothing that seems so... unrehearsed.

This always irritated me about this performance.

I guess it wouldn't be as annoying had he used a less popular verse but that being said, for those that care, most of Tip's verses would have probably come off as pretty recognizable so I guess he's a victim of his own fame.

Guru also recycled part of his verse from "Doe In Advance" which wasn't ever released so he used part of the same rhyme on Jazzmatazz "Feel The Music" .

...is that the Arsenio Hall Show was a lot of people's first time seeing hip hop acts, and all those emcees on that video showed him love for that. He did deserve a send-off like that....I know why de la soul wasn't on it, but they have to admit, arsenio dissin them did expose them to a new audience...

...at a larger scale misunderstanding can cost somebody their life if it isn't resolved. Arsenio misunderstood de la, but most likely after their second album was released

Such a staple of my youth. I literally talked about that with my friends for years afterwords.

Normally you didn't know who was going to be on the show until after you got in. When the warm up person told us the show would start out with an All Star Hip Hop tribute and started naming some of the people who were about to come out me and my boys couldn't believe our luck. KRS, Wu Tang, Tribe, etc all on the stage at the same time and ODB yelling into the camera "The Black Man is God!" while KRS egged him on was epic. For all of the shit people gave Arsenio he was definitely a friend to the Hip Hop nation.
