I thought you were asking for a song that has a 3-bar loop, like Electric Relaxation.

If instead you wanted songs that use triplets in percussion, I got you on those:

Elzhi - Days and Nights

Big Tone - Party Crasher

Listen to the hi hat on "Heaven." 1 2 3, + 2 3 / 1 2 3, + 2 3 / etc.

Then listen to the hi hat on "My First Song." Same count.

That's pure 6/8. Or 12/8, which is really the same thing with four beats (each having three subdivisions) to a measure, instead of just two. It ain't 4/4 - you can play a triplet against a 4/4 beat but you'd never have a hat counting off triplets for the entire duration of the song like that.

semantics...

any beat can be divided in to triplets... hence the 8T, 16T, 32T settings on all drum machines

even how he's rhyming indicates the 4 beat in a measure...listen to where his rhyming words fall...kick---snare---kick---snare (repeat) and then his line resets

musically u may be right lol... but i pretty sure about 3 things

1 my pops would say its 4/4
2 when they made the beat... the drum machine was set to 4/4
3 jay-z wrote it like he was writing to 4/4 ....in double time

but it IS math. Technically any song in 6/8 or 12/8 could be notated in 2/4 or 4/4. But when you're playing three subdivisions of each quarter note for the entire song, it's common practice to notate it as either 6/8 or 12/8. To most musicians (who know what they're talking about, and not just modern producer dudes programming a drum machine), these two songs would be in one of those two time signatures.

Basically there is no "right" answer, but there's the answer you would get if you polled a lot of knowledgeable people who were tasked with writing this down on paper. Most of them wouldn't put it in 4/4 because then they have to make a triplet notation 2-4 times for every measure of the entire song.

Regarding where he rhymes or starts/stops lines - the natural emphasis in 6/8 or 12/8 is always on two beats/four beats respectively. 1 2 3, + 2 3, reset. Stress on 1 and 4 for 6/8, 1/4/7/10 for 12/8.

If anyone's wondering, I read up on the difference between 6/8 and 3/4, seems like 6/8 has stressed and un-stressed notes, while 3/4 is all stressed notes... hmm

anyway, this beat is 6/8, slower than the ones posted above:

http://imjamesdoe.bandcamp.com/track/look-out-for

And can anyone tell me what time this is in?

it goes 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, that's 6 eighth notes - 6/8. has nothing to do with the tempos, b/c you can do the same for the ones i listed initially ("my first song" and "heaven") which are faster.

The second number in a time signature is what kind of note gets ONE of the counts in the FIRST number. 4 = quarter note, 8 = eighth note.

4/4 = four counts per measure, quarter note gets one of those counts
6/8 = six counts per measure, eighth note gets one of those counts

When you say this:

>kick snare kick snare (repeat)...thats 4 beats

...you're counting the *quarter* note. Four quarter notes per measure, and that implies "straight" eighth notes:

One-and, TWO-and, three-and, FOUR-and / One-and, TWO-and, three-and, FOUR-and

6/8 (or 12/8) means

ONE-two-three FOUR-five-six / ONE-two-three FOUR-five-six

or:

ONE-two-three FOUR-five-six SEVEN-eight-nine TEN-eleven-twelve (repeat)

But setting a sequence or drum machine to 4/4 time and quantizing the eighth notes to triplets will get you the same effect as 6/8 (or 12/8), so it's easy to see where the confusion lies.

1-2-3, 1-2-3...it's all about where your bars repeat, basically.

+ the second beat is basically 4/4 w/ a 7 bar loop, or something.

3/4 and really only a brief instrumental rather than a song, but might be able to serve some transitional function:

...but when you count that loop out way it goes:

1-2-3-4-1-2 (repeat)

or

Kick-snare-kick-snare-kick-snare (repeat)

If you count it as 6/4 it would go:

1-2-3-4-5-6 (repeat)
