its not general discussion of sampling etc

it is a challenge to ppl to actually prove using fact and history that sampling is or isnt the BEST sound for hip hop music

No. Not all the greatest albums or songs are sample based( as in chops and loops).

See Newcleus

See Mantronix

See Just Ice

See Afrika Bambatta

See Run DMC

See The roots( do you want more?) ..shiiiiiiiit

See The treacherous three

See the fearless four

See Kurtis Blow

See Grand Master Flash and the Furious five

LL Cool J's first album

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill,Check Your head, Ill Communications, Hello Nasty

I can go on and on and on.

Drums being programmed with drum machines came before chopping and sampling beats with MPCs and Sp1200s.....

Sampling doing the original era was more for adding adlibs and effects to records, similar to what these electric beat makers are doing, taking bits and pieces here and there, not constantly using full songs s and looping ...

Sampling is a good tool, and I enjoy it, but hip hop is not limited to that, and it shouldn't be

alot of those people used samples as well...

and some people would say the early records didnt reflect the "hip hop" of the parks...
sampling techonology wasnt there yet...

something more like

"Over 95% of the hip hop that is the BEST BEST BEST is sample-based"

in addition to some of the examples above

isn't a lot of Organized Noise Productions stuff sample-free? Mike Dean? Mark Ronson's "Fried Chicken"?

I wish there were more hip hop producers who did what Portishead did on their 2nd album (Use old recording techniques and press their own playing on vinyl and then sample it)

. . .of course I agree.

But, from where I'm standing, it's also like Hitler coming out in a speech and saying, "Beer sure is great after a day of hard work!"

It's technically not WRONG. But I feel like an asshole for agreeing because of WHO said it.

I like working with every color of the musical landscape when I feel like it.

It's not limiting to only use samples, it's just a matter of preference at that moment
It's not limiting to not use samples, it's still just a matter of preference at that moment

We have to remember that art is about expressing a feeling. The technology we use or don't use is just a way to help us convey those feelings.

I only decide whether I like the finished piece or not, but I never judge the work based on what brushes the painter used.

I think people took the other post the wrong way. Sample based hip hop never went anywhere. Some dudes just never expanded the way they use samples. Just Blaze, Kanye, Bink, No ID, etc. still use samples. Just in a current way. Primo uses samples but it sounds dated IMO. Any platinum album out in the past year has samples on it. I think dude in the other post was just pointing out that some guys never took it to the next level. They kinda got complacent and payed the price for it.

but that other post didn't exactly say that...

it wasn't framed as dudes not updating their approach to sampling.

it was framed as failing to "move on" or "progress" FROM sampling...

its semantics...i know. but, it was disrespectful.

then dudes in there calling sampling crap....LOL.

the piano is not a sample, some drums are live and some drums are sampled, violin is not sampled...the rest is samples

what if more hip hop producers took that approach, centering beats around original stuff but then layering a bunch of shorter vinyl samples on top of it?

that other post was starting to depress me a bit...

i really thought OKP had officially gone off the deep end.

i see there is still some common sense...

i can go back to lurking now, knowing some of ya'll regulars still ride for the art form...

i came out of retirement cuz i thought there weren't enough voices in that other post.

all that said, ain't shit wrong with using live instruments and synths. its just that sampling has been and will always be the backbone of hip hop and the most distinguishing factor that separates this genre from others....(that, and rappers). Producers don't think in absolutes, and that other post was going towards this fascist sentiment about what is futuristic and next level...nonsense.

Be Mad bitches!

Jake One

Scratch: You’re known for having this real hard, but organic underground sound. What did you do stylistically different on this record?

Jake One: There is definitely more joints with live instrumentation. Some of the records people will think are samples. The joint with MF Doom, called “Trap Door,” that’s all live. Also, this is probably the first time I’ve got to go back and put everything I wanted in to songs, like scratches, extra stuff. Usually when I do a record for a big artist, they want the beat like it sounds on a beat tape and that’s it. It’s more elaborate than some of the stuff I’ve done in the past.

That there is no limitation when it comes to the sound of hip hop. It is not limited to a tool or particular device, and it is all based on the creativity of the artist.

live instrumentation based hip hop can sound just as good as sampled based hip hop, and sampled based hip hop can sound just as good as live instrumentation hip hop

there is no the BEST BEST BEST BEST
