HipHop always had "conscious rappers" who kept the listeners informed on what's taking place in the communities/societies. Now, seems like that's a bygone era...
who are the conscious rappers nowadays?
What abt storytelling in HipHop? Ghostface, Krs One, Nas, Slick Rick, Big, Common, Cube, Lost Boyz and so on just to name a few who were all excellent stortellers...when's the last time one of your fav mainstream rapper made a record telling a story?
No one tells stories anymore.
Oh, and lastly, the new young lions don't seem to put as much of an emphasis on freestyling anymore which used to be a prerequisite for MCs...

uh yes, there was a time when MCs dismissed other MCs who said they couldn't freestyle....in the beginning when HipHop was a local NY/Bronx phenomenon, freestyling/ad lib was what the MC did while the DJ was spinning records. > >Where did you find that stupid ass quote from the original >post, did you make that up yourself?
Have you ever heard of this rap group named "The Roots?" because they have a larger reach in spreading the essence of HipHop...and its not a matter of being concerned w/them but it'd be nice to see the popular HipHop acts continue some of the traditions that past MCs established...and it was Chuck D who 1st said HipHop was the CNN of the ghetto(s)...in addition, the GREATEST HIPHOP RECORD EVER IS A CONSCIOUS RAP RECORD. Ever heard of "The Message?"...its a really good record >

Melle Mel and the rest of the crew did not want to record The Message because they thought it was too serious, they wanted to make "party" records, Flash especially because he had nothing to do with that track, and Mel didn't even write it, Duke Bootee did.
So the greatest hip hop record ever was a label decision not the artists, still a classic though
