If you like the rapping in King Fantastic, definitely check for Reese One's other/older group, Bleu Collar (with Basik MC).

One issue I have with a lot of up and coming rappers is that a lot of them have that Drakeish nasally voice, it really irritates me. I overlooked it with Kendrick Lamar, but some of these new LA cats like YG are doing way too much with it. That being said, one of my favorite up and coming LA rappers are Thurz, his LA Riot was one of my favorites from 2011. Problem has a lot of potential being affiliated with Quik, Kurupt, Terrace Martin and Snoop, but hes also been on the scene for quite a while and hasnt done much yet...

rapper that's still poppin with the Post-Jerkin and the other semi-Hipster semi-underground scene we have.

He was the first in a LOOOONG time to have a legit L.A. club hit that didn't feature Snoop or come from a major camp when he dropped "I'm fucked up"...it was a rehash of Hyphy, sounds just like "Sideshow" with a hint of "This is why I'm hot" but that shit was DOPE. The structure, flow, beat, energy, hook, bridge before 2nd verse....everything was perfect. But in this current era, he raps a LOT better than Tyga and YG, but he seems to be taking cues from them and hasn't been able to make songs as good as their 1st or even 2nd tier bangers.

I did play "Stuntin" Friday in Hollywood, and the crowd loved it so much that I played it twice. But it's VERY Regional...it will not break nationwide.

I agree, besides Kendrick Lamar Id say Problem is LA's most promising up and coming artist that has potential to become bigger than a regional artist. Im Fucked Up was the jam.

Also whats with Terrace Martin not getting any love in that article? He is the most talented LA artist/producer since Quik imo...

but production wise...shiiiiiiit. He is one of the most musical ever already. As with Quik, but even worse, I think he's overqualified to be in the Rap game...almost like he was born in the wrong generation. It's so much small shit that I catch in his music, especially from Kenneth Crouch's keyboard skills, that Rap fans do NOT care about at all. I almost want him to go the Robert Glasper direction.

Hip Hop needs more Terrace Martins to offset all the soulless synth music thats out there. Im hoping he will become more relevant as his career progresses

Ratchet crown, but for a good two years, he was the king of that shit.

I actually get it, since I'm from here and into that crowd/scene the same way as with the older crowds....he does suck as a rapper, but he has a catchy wack flow and always gets dope ass club beats that work for what he does. So it's where I'll NEEEEEEVER play his whole mixtape when I'm driving or working out, but I'll play 5-6 of his songs at most clubs I do that have a strong L.A. crowd there, because the shit just goes.

It's where I understand why people on OKP hate him and say he's wack...I take NO offense at all to it, LOL. And shit, I know him and still think he's half wack, just that I know he's good at what he does.

have made, but y'all keep me balanced on both sides. I love the fact that I can play and love Joe Moses "Do it for the ratchets" and previously "Go bitch" in a hype club...but then enjoy Jeru "Come clean" and Cru "Pronto" when I'm on my Hip Hop vibe.

you can get close, and I know people that can actually manipulate the synth sounds…but even then, you can't get the same warm feeling from the live instruments and analog recording.

plus, the way these new producers are using the synths, it seems as if they have a "no soul" effect button that they use.

beats are terrible.

and everyone wanted to call Bob Dylan crazy when he complained about the new digital format of recording and listening to music, and while he may very well be crazy, he was very right in his viewpoint.

instruments sounded like REAL live instruments. After 2-3 beats, I said eff this...if THIS is the best that synthesized acoustic instruments can sound, then synths will just NEVER sound good enough to give you that feel, period.

Somebody wanted me to interpolate Bobby Womack "Facts of life" and I found the closest sounding guitars and strings that I could, and it felt horrible to me.

instruments.

just won't happen.

people can get mad all they want when we talk shit about synths but the fact is, the soul and vibe of great music is gone when synths are used.

there definitely is a market for the synths, but when EVERYthing is using them, it makes for a really bland and sad state of music.

teach these kids to pick up an instrument.

even in hip-hop, when you sample live instruments you STILL get more feeling and emotion to your beats than these synth joints.

In response to Reply # 22

i've met some gospel musicians that can make their synths
sang
not sing
but sang
i think if you have the feel of soul in your playing
you can make any instrument work and give that song soul
i think it's a crutch to just rely on
"real" instruments
because it's the musicians, the composer, the writer, that gives a song soul
not the instruments
i feel like rakim
he could go off anything, even the string of a harp if that's all he had
and make it sound fly
such can be done with synths

so i do agree that these new songwriters just don't have the chops and but it's not the instruments fault
