"Recent vinyl pickups"

Just got a pair of 1210's a few weeks back, so I'm on my vinyl shit again

I just copped these from the Flea Market
D'Angelo-Voodoo (may sell it tho, just saw it go for 150 on ebay)

Isley Bros - Harvest for the World (not familiar with their album besides the hits but that's about to change)

Patrice Rushen - Straight from the Heart

Hall and Oates - Private Eyes (I can't go for that is on here)

The Police - Zenatta Mondatta (not familiar with them besides a song here and there)

Other stuff bought from TTL, FatBeats
Flying Lotus-Los Angeles

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah part 2, WorldWide Underground

DoomStarks-Victory Laps

Blu - Beneath the Heavens, Her Favorite Color

The Roots - How I Got Over

MF Doom - MM Food

Lee Bannon - Fantastic Planet (streamed the album and had to have it)

anyone grab some vinyl recently

LPs

Buster Williams - Pinnacle (Muse)
Archie Whitewater - S/T (Cadet Concept)
Curved Air - Aircut (Warner)
Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - Live Oblivion Vol. 2 (RCA)
The Dells - Always Together (Cadet)
Ndugu & The Chocolate Jam Co. - Do I Make You Feel Better? (Epic)
Afrique - Soul Makossa (Mainstream)
Howard Roberts - Antelope Freeway (Impulse)
Shades Of Brown (SOB) - S/T (Cadet)
Rotary Connection - Songs (Cadet Concept)
Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage (Blue Note)
Phraroah Sanders - Thembi (Impulse)
Gong - Shamal (Virgin)
Horace Silver Quintet - That Healin' Feelin (Blue Note)
Tower Of Power - East Bay Grease (San Fransisco)
Express Rising - S/T (Memphix)

12"s

Midnight Star - Open Up To Love (Solar)
Five Star - Let Me Be The One (RCA)
Count Bass D - "Violatin'" (Spongebath)
T-Love - "Who Smoked Sunshine?" (Astralwerks)
The East Flatbush Project - "Tried By 12" (10/30 Uproar)
Dabrye feat. Jay Dee & Phat Kat - "Game Over" (test press)
Mad Skillz - "Move Ya Body" (Big Beat)
Ras Kass - "Understandable Smooth" (Patchwerk)

45s

Rudy Love & The Love Family - "Does Your Mama Know" (Calla)
Freedom - "Get Up And Dance" (Malaco)
Alicia Myers - "I Want To Thank You" MCA)
Zapp - "More Bounce To The Ounce" (Warner)
Prince - "If I Was Your Girlfriend" (Paisley Park)
Delegation - "Oh Honey" (Shadybrook)
The Pharcyde - "Ya Mama" (Delicious Vinyl)
The Pharcyde - "Soul Flower (Remix)" (Delicious Vinyl)
One Way - "Cutie Pie" (MCA)
One Way - "Don't Stop" (MCA)
Bobby Caldwell - "My Flame" (Clouds)

Those are all from the past month or so, all Nashville finds. Most of those 45s and 12"s are doubles, but I can't refuse a second copy when it's cheap (even if I have Serato). I was fucking thrilled to finally find that Archie Whitewater in the field....such a great record. That Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage was a $3 Van Gelder still in shrink. Not sure what the store was thinking with that one, but I'll take it. Lots of Cadet/Cadet Concept purchases recently, now that I look at the list.

They had just put it up that day. I *knew* I had a reason for going to that record shop after work.....it probably wouldn't have stayed up there for more than 48 hours.

I only knew that album for "Cross Country," which is definitely the shit, but WOW there's some dopeness on there that I was unaware of. "Hulk" is funky as hell and most of the other tracks have that Barbara & Ernie-esque jazz/psych vibe that I can never get enough of.

Fuck it, I'm putting this on as soon as I get home. I didn't know they re-issued it.

Some of the vocals get annoying. But, as a band, they were really onto something.

http://www.discogs.com/Archie-Whitewater-Archie-Whitewater/release/3382171

Just looking on Dusty Groove right now, they don't have the reissue even listed anymore. This leads me to believe one of two things: 1) It went fast because of the exceeding rarity of the original or 2) It was a less than official reissue that got yanked.

Considering I've seen that record sell on eBay for $100+ steadily for over a decade now, I'd say $35 was reasonable (and no, it would not have stuck around long at that price).

I bought mine for a dollar back when I was working at a used record store in 2001-ish. It seems like a radio copy that never got played (beat cover, pristine vinyl).

I found my copy in a Tokyo shop for something like $20, which amazed me cuz cats out there tend to know *everything* and joints w/ famous samples on 'em always go for big dough. I was real proud of myself for snatching that at that price and I'm not even a hardcore digger like that. But anything on Cadet Concept is an automatic cop to me. Chi-City!!

btw, I flipped another track on that album myself for a joint on my EP. peep the link below

I mean, I have it and I don't want to part with it, but it's not like it was hard to come by, for a long time.

It seems like it's become collectible in the last two years — why is that?

when I came up with it about 6 years ago it already was hard to find and you'd pay a lot online for it. not as much as brown sugar, still kinda rare tho.

I recently bought a pair of audio-technicas AT-LP120s and Shure M97 needles(both great for my living room purposes).

Anyway, I recently picked up Neal Evans (from Soulive) "Bang", ODB "Don't You Know part II" and Nat Birchall "Sacred Dimension".

Alan Evans has got a show in Charlotte next Saturday and is supposed to have vinyl of his new shit ("Drop Hop") available there (on all his tour stops).

I think that album goes for dough because it's:

A) Out of print

B) A known source for drum samples

C) D'Angelo stans have the 2LP as a saved eBay search...they WILL get a copy at some point, no matter how much they have to pay

Personally, I'm looking for the 2LP promo wax for Brown Sugar. I have the European picture cover LP, but it's waaaaaaay too quiet. I'm glad I scooped my copy of Voodoo at Fat Beats NYC back when it came out.

I mean, it was $15 when it was new and it sold buckets of copies.

I never really considered it a "rare" album, and I don't think it's that hard to find, but I guess people just want it.

**shrug**

Mine's opened, but still in the shrink.

It's tucked away in the "Y" section of my jazz crates (yes, I organize by first name). I rarely go that far back when I'm in the mix.

Time to pull that one out after work. Very good album.

record store day. I didn't go after any of the RSD exclusives but I did pick up that Syl Johnson box set from Blue Note, Echocentrics/Sunshadows, and Q-bert's new scratch record.

Other $1 finds....

Jack Wilkins - Windows (Mainstream)
Ronnie Foster - Cheshire Cat (Blue Note)
Perigeo - Non E' Poi Cosi' Lontano (RCA)
Harvey Mandel - Cristo Redentor (Philips)
Dreams - S/T (Columbia)
Donny Hathaway - S/T (Atco)
David T Walker - S/T (Ode)

The Dreams LP is a double, the Donny is clean as hell but it has a warp...anybody have any good tips for a QUICK un-warping, or am I just going to have to do it the long way?

Stick it in the middle of my most-packed crate. Try to forget about it for a few weeks. Hope for the best.

I used to place 25 lb weights around the perimeter of the record and leave it for a few days. That worked with bowled records but I haven't tried it on a "single-side" warp. Sadly, all those weights are back in Kentucky.

You ever tried the oven/placing it in the sun/some other direct-source-of-heat method? That shit scares me, but I feel like some heat would be the most effective way of dealing with it.

It does straighten out the warp, but it also melts the grooves together a little bit. So your stylus never actually hits the lower parts of the grooves and it just sounds like a really dirty record forever (which, obviously, no amount of cleaning will correct).

The bendy method is preferable. If it's a piece of more pliable vinyl, just bend it in the opposite direction of the warp on and off for about an hour. This takes practice, but it's the least harmful rectification I've come across.

I'd say the heat method is an absolute last resort.

Unfortunately, with non-dish, single occurrence warps like that, the heat method is also the most effective.

You will need two fairly big pieces of clear glass (make sure they are bigger than the record) and a sunny day. Place the record between the two pieces and find a warm spot. Five to eight minutes should correct most warps. I wouldn't let it go any longer than fifteen minutes though. A good way to make extra sure that you don't melt the grooves outside of the warped area is to place white towels on top of the glass on the area of the record that is not warped.

DO NOT, WHATEVER YOU DO, EVER EVER EVER PUT THE RECORD IN THE OVEN — this doesn't work. I don't know who came up with this idea, but it melts fucking everything, and yeah, the record's not warped anymore, but the surface noise being almost as loud as the music isn't an even trade.

Good luck.

Shirley Murdock-go on without you/as we lay 12" a definite win here

niles township high school- keep it gay....i can't tell how old it is and havent listened yet but i'm expecting big band standards...the title was worth spending 50 cents on a laugh though

test pressing of ring my bell by anita ward (1979) ...this was definitely the big win for the day...i'm curious about finding a value for it since a test pressing is rare but i dont plan on selling it
