Yeah I'm upping this a week later. Never had time to post my Top 10, as it was hard enough to do teh honorable mentions. So here we go, in no order:
1. How About Some Hardcore http://youtu.be/HWcfmkslT48
The shit that started it all. BAnned from many a club in NYC as it was known to start a riot. To keep it 100, I actually DID NOT LIKE this shit when it first dropped. If memory serves, it ended up on the House Party 3 soundtrack. I was thining 'how the hell can you be hard on House Party?". I've been doing pennance ever since... Saw them perform this live at the Smokin' Grooves tour. Absolute madness...
2. World Famous http://youtu.be/l0GXWBCmH5Q
The first time I heard this shit was on a '96 DJ Clue mixtape months before the album dropped. I think I playd this shit so much the tape popped. Twice. I have rode for these dudes ever since. Big Jaz with the ill Donnie/Roberta sample, Fame throwing shots at Smoothe da Hustler (I'm outspoken/niggas language is broken/record labels need to stop that wack shit they be promotin'), verbal gunshot effects... That shit still bangs. One of the first tracks I'd play to anyone unfamiliar with MOP, for sure
3. Ante Up http://youtu.be/3MUGAxpI0Bc
I honestly thought twice about adding this to the top 10, as it just seems like one of the songs that your frat boys would cling to, like 'Jump Around'. But shiiiiiiit... This is some agressive ass shit right here. DR Period came back to the fold with an absolute, certifide, undeniable classic, and Billy and Fame tore the shit out of it. Even on the remix they outshined everyone else. As for the video, any time you start with someone getting yanked clean out his truck (which some stations started cutting, BTW) you can't help but like it.
As a bonus, it also gave one of the greatest Sesame Street mash-ups you will ever see. I keep this shit on my phone for a good laugh: http://youtu.be/21OH0wlkfbc
4. I Luv http://youtu.be/pi-KqDDg1lw
It's been scientifically proven that every time this song comes on my car goes 30 mph over the speed limit. This has got to be one of my all time favorite MOP/Primo collaborations. The track is fire. Billy and Fame are fire. Freddie Foxxx further makes a case of being 'king of the 3rd verse' by bodying what's left of the track. This shit just makes you feel good and energized while whooping someone's ass...
5. Let It Bang http://youtu.be/DqjT4APzHGk
This is actually the X-Ecutioner's song (RIP Roc Raida) but it may as well have been MOP featuring the X-men. This is that loud ass, rap/rock shit that they seem made for. Billy pretty much sums up the group in one line: 'It's the untameable, non-flamable, unrestrainable, non-changeable MOP!!!!' So, expect a lot of hollering, gun talk, and asswhoppings, either verbal or literal. Yet another track that will start an instant mosh pit.
6. Calm Down http://youtu.be/Y9LIboTcPpU
Holy balls. This shit here.... Man.... I can't even.... First of all, the Nona Hendryx sample is un-fucking-believably dope. The drums sound like they're just slapping the shit out of it. The hook, recycled from one of their earlier songs (that they seem to do often with good effect) does anything BUT make you want to calm down. The lyrics.... Put it like this. Don't listen to this one if you're in an office setting. You may end up stomping over to your co-workes cubicle and smashing their monitor in their lap and beating them to a pult with a stapler. Just saying...
7. Get The Fuck Outta Here (Mash Out Posse version) http://youtu.be/Txhc-YU9jIU
As a side project, a few MOP acapellas were laid over some work from Shiner Massive. There were a few that worked extremely well (like Conquorers and Put It In The Air). This one, however, is probably my favorite. More than at any other time I can remember Bill sounds like your wild ass drunk uncle calmly telling you he will beat your ass and Fame is that little motherfucker that starts mad shit and gived nary a fuck. If you haven't bought this album, you're doing your ears a disservice
8. Instigator http://youtu.be/8dfg4S0v3SY
I'm not sure how 9th Wonder managed to hook up with MOP. But damn if they didn't make a burner with this one. Notice how yo unever hear anybody talk shit about MOP on the radio, and vice versa? This pretty much explains it right here. 'Y'all niggaz beef over beats, but where the klappin' at?'
9. Fuck MOP http://youtu.be/KtFm5soxEDk
First heard on the Marxman mixtape, this shit has banged in my system ever since. Calling out any and everybody that had to compromise to get radio play, MOP stands their ground. 'Think I'm gon' sell out, and bail out from hardcore tactics/and celebrate with hatin' ass, thong wearin' bastards?!?' Where the fuck is you're morals, indeed. But as Fame screams on teh fade out, you hate that you gotta love 'em.
10. Breakin The Rules http://youtu.be/bTe1JtACx-s
To me, this is the definition of a slow burner. It's not until the middle of the song that you realize you've put whomever happens to be standing beside you in a headlock for no reason at all. I mean, there was nothing super spectacular about Premier's track (which was still fire), or about the lyrics per se (though Fame kills it with 'now that I know, that you against me, and you (*slap) you (*slap), you against me too?). But when you put it all together by the end of the song you just started a fight with the entire block, just because. I have litteraly slapped passengers and knocked over drinks all over my dashboard when this song comes on, so I don't play it with people riding shotgun anymore. This one is like 5 times the sum of it's parts. It's classic, no, quintessential, MOP. <-- Dave Thomas knows what's up... __________________________
Jay: Look here homie, any nigga can get a hit record. This here is about respect. Game: Like Gladys Knight. Jay: Aretha Franklin. Game: Word, I like her too. Jay: Nigga...
