"Reflection: How do you feel Kanye West will be viewed in History"

Reflection: How do you feel Kanye West will be viewed in History?

At the end of his career or even now...how do you think he will be remembered in the hip hop culture?

Icon?

Dope producer?

Averge MC?

Dope MC?

Overall Dope Artist?

Thoughts

marginal everything

but a Hype man within his own Hype that is almost peerless in Hip hop and that is saying something.

nobody past or present knows how to PR themselves better than this man and that includes Puffy, never thought I d say that but Puffy still is a smarter business brand though

he just got over at a below average time in Hip hop and Music in general IMO.

10 years back Roc a Fella didn't even want to allow that turkey to make a solo album they were like Produce all you want but a solo career? NAW!

and at first "through the Wire" stalled for a minute.

he is a average act IMO

you didn't respond to the issue at hand.

Even an AVERAGE artist is better than Puffy. Puffy ain't even average. He has not one lick of artistic talent. He's a backup dancer with business skills. People produce his tracks and write his rhymes. Kanye, even at his WORST on the mic and on the boards is INFINITELY more artistically inclined than Puffy. No one can argue that, no matter what your overall opinion on Kanye is.

average to Below Average MC

as a lyricist he bout neck and neck with Hammer and I liked Hammer more

you see I grew up on Hip Hop and this turkey looking like Kurtis Blow's long lost son minus the California Curl and twirl is Overrated big time.

yeah he is cut from the same cloth as Puffy because he samples and has a push for cross over that automatically somebody pushed that agenda, however ain't no other era that this turkey could have come out and not been clowned except in the mid to late 90's.

Puffy is a talented less turkey and yet he is a blueprint for alot of what I see with Kayne imagery and stylewise.

Kayne bores me with his rapping and i don't get the hype at all.

the Hype and Media Attention has him like He is Tom brady, but his actual game to my ears is like Tim Tebow all wheels and no steering wheel.

umm... Roc A Fella wasn't known for breaking superstars so it doesn't really surprise me they weren't feeling Kanye.

Dude wasn't a street hustler writing back alley drug deal raps...

over him why you jiving. Kayne came along in a very watered down time and had a few pieces of chalk that stuck to a tree and now he is getting this pass, but that turkey is madd corny and overrated.

and it don't matter the bottom line as big as Jay Z is and as branded as the Roc is, they still looked at Kayne putting out a record as if he was Kevin federline or something.

they didn't believe in that turkey until it hit. beleive that.

i really dont see kanye living to be an old man. i feel like he might fall deeper into his drug habits and crazy lifestyle and eventually die at a somewhat young age.

i think if he dies young he'll be remembered as one of the greatest artists of our generation.

I don't have time to look up and read the lyrics right now but can you specify any lines where you think he gave that away?

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but I listened to 808s one time and MBDPF maybe 5-10x so I guess I just didn't pick up on that.

I doubt he's just talking about weed, especially when he says "I'mma need a whole day, at least roll doja"

and "I think I feel in love with a pornstar, and got married in the bathroom". Could be talking about having sex in the bathroom but coke is the sense I got

As far as 808's it's just the whole 80's New York/New Wave coke vibe (Think American Psycho) as well as the arrogance of singing a whole album.

dude references coke a ton. "Church in the Wild" "Power" "Hell of a Life" and a few others on MBDTF.

And idk he just has the rock star aura about him, that I think he's gonna die young. Just a weird hunch.

Has he indulged in recreational drugs? Probably but I haven't seen any real evidence that he has a real problem (i.e. Lindsay Lohan and that ilk). If anything the drug references stem from the lifestyle he is surrounded by. He seems to be too disciplined to fall into the addict category.

I was listening today to all these references, and while it's pretty clear that he partakes, I wouldn't expect that he has an "issue" either.

That said, I do think the fact that he's so open about it may be cause for future concern. I mean nicknaming a line of coke on a black chick's skin (No Church in the Wild) is pretty heavy haha especially for a topic so typically taboo in hiphop.

But still, I'd be shocked if he ever got to the point where it was a serious issue for him. It's pretty clear from how he talks about it that he LIKES it, but like you said, he seems fairly disciplined so I'd be surprised.

... but I honestly feel, from a historical perspective, people will see it this way:

Kanye West is to hip-hop what Miles Davis was to Jazz.

In regards to innovation, in regards to pushing himself beyond the borders of what is traditionally considered hip-hop, in regards to his cutting edge approach to producing tracks.

But he has more work to do- he started off good and fell victim to the party and materialism culture that is so prevalent in hip-hop.

I feel Kanye is out-of-touch with his original fan-base. I don't think he relates to the common person that is struggling, and that's a problem. He came down to visit Occupy Wall St. NY last year and the irony is that just months prior to that he released an album with Jay-Z that was based on his luxuries and lavish 1% lifestyle. Many Kanye fans can't relate or identify with that. And i personally feel it's a slap in the face to smear your riches in the faces of struggling people while we are in a recession.

He's also extremely confident, some would say arrogant. So was Miles.

I'm a longtime Kanye fan and truly believe that he's brilliant, but like all human beings, he's flawed.

Even the sound of his BEATS reflects this, as well as his refusal to do production outside of he and Jay's recent work. Whereas previously, he would put in work for anyone he thought he could make the right sound for.

I miss the "Guess Who's Back" days, and shit like that. Simple, hiphop, beats. He don't do that anymore. Everything is an event. IMO he's been largely unlistenable since Graduation. But I realize I'm probably in the minority.

In response to Reply # 11

because if you are talking about Miles Davis that works the drive thru at Martys Burger and onion rings joint then cool, but if you are talking about Miles Davis the trumpet player then you is on that double crack.

Miles Davis changed the course of music a few times, Kayne west barely has a done a thing musically.

miles made classic albums and brought in great young fresh talent.

Kayne couldn't carry Miles Davis's Wig let alone be put in the same sentence as him.

turkeys be on that double Crack with these kind of statements, you can pass that on to some younger turkey who don't know no better, Quincy Jones will drop his snow bunnies over that kinda statement and he already told you how Jive Kayne is as a so called Producer.

Edit:

And if you really had to choose five indisputable Kanye joints that nearly everyone loves, they'd likely be

1. Can't Tell Me Nothin
2. Jesus Walks
3. Touch The Sky
4. All Falls Down
5. All of the Lights

and I mean I'm being hella conservative here. But those five songs are flawless, and I don't even know if that's up for debate at this point. You'd be hard pressed to find another post-2000 rapper not named Jay-Z or Outkast that has five songs that strong.

Icons are known for their personality and impact on said field. Everyone knows their name in the category and can remember at least one thing they did. Kanye fits the bill. From many hits to crazy shenanigans (George W. Bush, award shows), Kanye has done it all. History only remembers the people that do it big and Kanye has been doing it for the past 10 years. Icon. Hip Hop Legend. Kanye doesn't have to be the best, just one of the best known.

Remember all the artist who were the hugest thing in the world at a given time and then just kind of went away and eclipsed by some later act?

Remember how large Bone was? ATCQ? Boys II Men? MC Hammer? Granted Kanye is probably more talented than a lot of those big acts I mentioned but let's admit that a time will come when dude won't be making the bangers and will have to rely on nostalgia and catalouge to be considered and Icon. For some reason I can't see Kanye being cool with at.

But Ye has had a big of an inpact as any hip-hop artist in his era.

Household name, has classic songs, classics albums..

I think he'll be appreciated for his achievements as a overall artist more so than one of the greatest MC's or greatest producers..

you can hate all you want but he can produce and his raps are way above average. He's funny, witty and addresses topics that most MC's avoid.

The negro called out George W Bush on national TV when black people were beyond pissed over Katrina.

Kanye is a pure artist.

sorry.. I didn't mean to respond to your post. I meant in general, people can hate Kanye all they want but he is an icon.

I never said he was a great rapper... I said way above average. Plenty of great rappers can't make good songs. Kanye makes good songs and the raps aren't half bad.

One of hip-hop's true great artists. I'll never be able to understand people who shit on his first two albums, or even his third one to a lesser extent. Granted, he's never gonna be the most talented rapper, but he was always exciting to hear (save a few verses).

Shameless plug: I wrote something on him for my blog, feel free to check it http://thomasbowe.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/leave-kanye-alone.html

it's going to be favorable, albeit a lil controversial... provided he doesn't trot out a bunch of POO POO in the coming years

but Kanye, while not being a great innovator in the grand scheme of things, definitely was a lightning rod both in and outside of the music. his road to the top and staying power despite how uneven his discography is rather unique in the genre.

plus I don't know if he's someone that people could dare imitate. listening to Kanye has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the years... certainly, I would have never expected this after hearing "Through The Wire" almost 10 years ago.
