"Who else wasn't impressed w "Party & B*llshit"?"

the beat was too clubby it was infact B*llshit

a throw away song in his catalouge

their was nothing about Biggie's rhymes that would have predicted greatness

any other great artist debut songs that wern't anything special?

But it was a solid first single. Only one 'God' tier mc I can think of who hit it out of the park the first 16 bars out (At the BBQ)

had it been Puff wouldve kept w that style for Biggie from the gate and he wouldnt have had R2D

>But it was a solid first single. Only one 'God' tier mc I can

I was going to compare it to Halftime as a debut song but I didnt

Biggie had club songs that allowedhim to flex his personality , wit and overall skill set

but P&B didnt

it's only noteriety is that it was his debut sigle

actually i really first heard of BIG through the rappages coverstory. Then the first music i consciously heard of him was juicy and i was really unimpressed...

When the album dropped i still listened in the record store (remember that?) on the strength of the article and buzz. By the time i came to 'the What' with Meth i was jumping from excitement.

quotables and all (never mind it's also one of my favorite songs), before this track...

granted, I was a late bloomer to Biggie, though I remember hearing this and the Heavy D track before "Juicy" and thinking they were cool songs.

Party & Bullshit wasn't a fucking club hit. It was a street hit that banged in the club. Actually more like the 'spot' cause we hadn't really penetrated the club first.

The verses are NY to the fucking core and that's why it was hot. Nigga put to paper the lives we were living everyday. On the real this is the most relatable Big song to me for that reason. It didn't get to the fantasy land shit that would come later.

It also gave birth to Bad Boy and basically set out the model for what was to follow.

no one has even mentioned the who's the man soundtrack in this thread yet?

or the supercat and mary remixes?

p&b was nothing like halftime

we were all waiting for halftime to drop based off bbq etc

we knew nas was going to the shit before halftime

halftime sorta confirmed it

and then we had to wait another year for illmatic!!

p&b was a very different thing

if anything... the mista cee mixtape might have been a better comparison to halftime from that standpoint

we mighta had a feeling big was gonna be special but when that mista cee mixtape hit?

it was a wrap

mind you... im not dart adams or one of these dudes who speaks for the hiphop universe but... in my 1993 new jersey highschool and neighborhood??

i think the above was pretty well accepted as fact

besides the underground tapes floating around-which most of us outside of NY hadnt heard at the time

Biggies pre R2D output/verses were spotty at best

he was non-descript on his debut "A bunch of niggas"..Jesse West aka 3rd show showed more moxie and personality

The "Real love" rmx was a lil better

His verse on "Buddy X" I dont even remember anyone talking about then or now

then the "Dolly baby" remix I again thought 3rd eye and to a lesser extent Puffy himself stole the show

then "P&b"

from the direction of the post its success (or lack off) seemed very regional

NY Loved it so u say

I dont recall the rest of the word being so enthusiastic about it

..Im not even talking about it being a hit but pre RD, he wasnt settin hip hop on fire at this point outside of NY from an MCing perspective

The world didn't stop for "Party & Bullshit" but that's only because there was so much other hot shit out at the time. If not for "Party and Bullshit" I wouldn't have even given "Juicy" a shot. I still don't really like the feel of "Juicy" but I appreciate it. BIG was kicking that shit on "Party and Bullshit" the song is catchy and really well written. Dude was already a superior writer & just oozing with personality but if you weren't listening to the song hard enough you might have thought he was comparable to the Pudgee tha Phat Bastard's of the rap world.

it got played, but nobody was on it like that...it was more of an str8 hiphop radio station late night song than anything....shit, he came down, did concerts and didn't even perform that song at all, and NOBODY was mad about it...

...but my intro to BIG was "Dolly my Baby", so i was sold a year earlier.....wasn't a big fan of "Juicy"...then "Big Poppa" came out and i was good to go....

again, i'm not saying people didn't love it, just not everywhere...

yo.. they also played a remix with P&B that was pretty much just an upright bass? Kind of jazzy and real thick... it had a Digable Planets type vibe to it but it was so raw because Big was spitting on it.

I was never a fan of Puffy's adlibs but even them shits sounded hot on this remix.

Bobbito and Stretch used to play that one a lot as well.

I was never a fan of the original beat because I heard that remix first.

that sample will always be good, but at that speed, and biggie dropping some of his hardest lyrics, i dont see how anyone could hate it. that uptempo era is missed.

I dont like cuz u like it?

I asked if anyone else didnt like it?

what I am getting is that it was a regional songand part of its appeal was based on the buzz surrounding his Mister C mixtape which it seems was more raw and better than his r&b stuff

I get that but u have to keep in mind pre internet alot of us didnt have access to that stuff

people got on you for saying it was a club hit. NOBODY agrees with you on that. meaning nobody here thought it was a club hit, and nobody thought it was a huge hit. NOBODY!!

you didn't like the song that's cool, but for the majority of folk in here it was a great (some people's favorite of his) and in the history it was pivotal. Now you're mad because you didn't realize how pivotal it was and because you didn't know that we're all elitists? GTFOH!!

>it wasnt "pivatol"

Spring 1993 - Puffy is still working at Uptown, though under a watchful eye because well he wasn't working well with others. But he's earned room because of his success with Mary. He's done enough to get his own label out from under Harrell but it isn't forthcoming. So he's already got it in his mind to move on. He's hoping to take Mary with him in the deal but despite bring her in they aren't going to let him go out with her.

So he's working to buzz his own unattached (soon to be attached to him) artists. Who's the Man soundtrack and lines up Big for his first solo release which actually kicks off the soundtrack and he manages to get pressed as a single for vinyl.

So this goes out beyond NY as a promo single on the uptown imprint, and what's one of the most memorable lines on it?

"I'm A BAD BOY"

Bad Boy didn't exist yet. This was the first Bad Boy song which he managed to promote using another label's budget. It markedly drew a line between Puffy's work with Uptown and what would become Bad Boy. Before that remember Puffy's claim to fame was Mary J Blige. It was a very pivotal track in the history.

That doesn't mean it was a club or smash it, or that it wasn't a regional song. Doesn't even mean you have to like it. But respect history, and if you don't know the history, you can ask, rather than getting defensive.

my intro to Biggie was the 'Dolly My Baby' remix and i wasn't paying attention b/c i wanted to know if it was a Mary J. Blige song. then i heard 'Juicy' but didn't care for the song. i didn't care about Biggie until 'Big Poppa'. and by then he seemed to be 'everywhere' (i think 'Players Anthem' & 'Can't You See' were out too) and i felt like i was playing catch-up. i was in college w/New Yorkers who hipped me to 'Party and Bullshit' somewhere around this time and i wasn't impressed. but by then i'd heard several of his songs.

fuck you.

we were just arguing over in GD about the 'I Got 5 On It' remix. some OKP in LA said it was just whatever. and those of us who were in the Bay when it dropped know it was _MASSIVE_. hell, it still gets played. but the LA barely even knew the remix exists.

i was in STL right before 'Country Grammar' went national. i have never, ever seen so many ppl so wrapped up in a song. yeah it became a national hit, but it didn't hit nationally the way it hit in STL.

these things happen. i understand it.

'P & B' seems to have been received more widely in NYC than it was in other spots. that makes sense b/c it wasn't on any of Biggie's nationally released albums.
