actually i really first heard of BIG through the rappages coverstory. Then the first music i consciously heard of him was juicy and i was really unimpressed...

When the album dropped i still listened in the record store (remember that?) on the strength of the article and buzz. By the time i came to 'the What' with Meth i was jumping from excitement.

Party & Bullshit wasn't a fucking club hit. It was a street hit that banged in the club. Actually more like the 'spot' cause we hadn't really penetrated the club first.

The verses are NY to the fucking core and that's why it was hot. Nigga put to paper the lives we were living everyday. On the real this is the most relatable Big song to me for that reason. It didn't get to the fantasy land shit that would come later.

It also gave birth to Bad Boy and basically set out the model for what was to follow.

The world didn't stop for "Party & Bullshit" but that's only because there was so much other hot shit out at the time. If not for "Party and Bullshit" I wouldn't have even given "Juicy" a shot. yo.. they also played a remix with P&B that was pretty much just an upright bass? Kind of jazzy and real thick... it had a Digable Planets type vibe to it but it was so raw because Big was spitting on it.

I was never a fan of Puffy's adlibs but even them shits sounded hot on this remix.

Bobbito and Stretch used to play that one a lot as well.

I was never a fan of the original beat because I heard that remix first.

Spring 1993 - Puffy is still working at Uptown, though under a watchful eye because well he wasn't working well with others. But he's earned room because of his success with Mary. He's done enough to get his own label out from under Harrell but it isn't forthcoming. So he's already got it in his mind to move on. Bad Boy didn't exist yet. This was the first Bad Boy song which he managed to promote using another label's budget. It markedly drew a line between Puffy's work with Uptown and what would become Bad Boy. Before that remember Puffy's claim to fame was Mary J Blige. It was a very pivotal track in the history.

That doesn't mean it was a club or smash it, or that it wasn't a regional song. Doesn't even mean you have to like it. But respect history, and if you don't know the history, you can ask, rather than getting defensive.

my intro to Biggie was the 'Dolly My Baby' remix and i wasn't paying attention b/c i wanted to know if it was a Mary J. Blige song. then i heard 'Juicy' but didn't care for the song. i didn't care about Biggie until 'Big Poppa'. and by then he seemed to be 'everywhere' (i think 'Players Anthem' & 'Can't You See' were out too) and i felt like i was playing catch-up. i was in college w/New Yorkers who hipped me to 'Party and Bullshit' somewhere around this time and i wasn't impressed. but by then i'd heard several of his songs.

we were just arguing over in GD about the 'I Got 5 On It' remix. some OKP in LA said it was just whatever. and those of us who were in the Bay when it dropped know it was _MASSIVE_. hell, it still gets played. but the LA barely even knew the remix exists.

i was in STL right before 'Country Grammar' went national. i have never, ever seen so many ppl so wrapped up in a song. yeah it became a national hit, but it didn't hit nationally the way it hit in STL.
