"Can we discuss D.J. Rogers?"

I've become a believer of this cat's music within the last couple weeks.

His arrangements, his vocals, the instrumentation - simply amazing.

I recently got his 3 RCA albums and the gospel album he released in 1982. If it wasn't for Esperanza, The Clarks and my weekly dose of Savage Love, D.J. Rogers would be running my iPod now.

Any thoughts? Stories? Favorites? Share...

definitely underrated and under-appreciated (except maybe by pimps) in the 70s.
he kind of gets grouped with johnny "guitar" watson for me in that i get the impression they probably shared a lot of their fan base.
but what an awe-inspiring, clear, carrying voice.
a truly GREAT (and i don't use that adjective loosely) singer.

"secret lady" (which i believe unless i'm mistaken features a young charlie wilson) is a personal fav. of mine of his.

"don't you want to ride" obviously a stand-out track.

"on the road again", "it's good to be alive", "faithful til the end".

he was an amazing singer/songwriter brimming with talent.
i defy anyone to show me 1 bad note he hit... ever.
i cannot say enough good things about d.j. rogers sr.

I coulda swore I heard Charlie on more than one cut. The credits say it features The Gap Band, so yeah.

The credits also state that D.J. was managed by Lonnie Simmons at the time.

>"don't you want to ride" obviously a stand-out track.

I'd like to see this album get reissued.

>"on the road again", "it's good to be alive", "faithful til the end".

Indeed. "Love Is On the Way" - THAT'S the shit that's amazingly awesome to me.

I'm trippin' off the fact that I slept this long. Every song I've heard so far makes me want to own a legit copy of everything he's recorded. Sheesh. THIS is Rhythm & Blues.

charles wilson is also credited individually in the credits.
although it doesn't specify which tracks.
but his range is so close to dj's that it's sort of deceiving for me.

yeah he produced and got co-writing credits on a few tracks, "secret lady" was one of them.

After signing with RCA Records, Rogers' debut album It's Good to Be Alive was released. Initially gaining radio airplay as an album track, the single "Say You Love Me" peaked at number 51 R&B on Billboard's charts in spring 1976. The 45 was a "turntable hit," meaning that it received a substantial amount of radio play, but for whatever reasons the exposure didn't translate into the single being a big seller. The lackluster chart success of "Say You Love Me" (and his other RCA releases) lead to Rogers' angry tirades in an article in the premier Soul Magazine, as he attributed the label's seemingly slothful attitude towards his music as a result of the record division's main purpose as being that of a "tax write-off."

some things never change for prime movers i guess.
