Who is your "Poster Child MC"....what I mean is when you think of Hip Hop and the definition of an MC, who is the example?
LIKE............If you were in a college course called Hip Hop 101: The Essence...they get to the chapter on Mcing...who would it be?
I go with KRS b/c he LOVES the culture, can rap, has flow, has lyrics, stage God, move the crowd, has dope singles and albums. If i got the the chapter on Mcing...I believe his face would be the one I'd expect..
Who is your Poster Child of an MC?
Peace

when i'm thinking of who embodies hip hop... just oozes that shit, i think Mos Def...
i think part of that is cuz it's one thing to have created hip hop as we know it today, like all of those pioneers... and i wouldn't be mad at ppl naming those folks... but to grow up in it and explore different avenues, while still showing respect to the truest forms, i dunno, i think Mos has that down pat...
in terms of straight spitting.. 1 mic, that's all... BT takes it... hearing him rhyme is the most natural sounding shit ever.. it sounds completely effortless and well-constructed at the same time.. i think being the prototype MC can aslo have disadvantages (i.e. can be bland to the untrained ear or to people who don't really look at MCing in *that* way)... but for the enthusiasts, dude is a pleasure to listen to.. i mean, talk about being born to do something.. sheesh..
He's the total package IMO. The rhymes, the live performance, the catalog and the look. People can laugh but image is important in this industry. Uncle Ricky is the only nigga from that era that can make a mainstream LP that matters today.

I think he's a very accessible persona to a casual listener, there's gonna be a song that the uninitiated can groove to, you can give a sense of history while presenting a modern delivery, and it's easy to show a novice why he's great, on paper or on record.
That said, when I discuss emceeing with my students, I usually use Mos Def's "Speed Law."

but still not QUITE as potent as he was in those years. The second verse on Gold tho? Just one of many examples that he can still be top notch when he goes in.

KRS 1- He would be my number 1 pick because he has pretty much spent his entire career carrying the "MC" torch. Aside from that, he is nice with the pen, nice off the dome and nice on the stage.
Black Thought- I pick Thought and Mos for all of the same reasons as KRS 1. KRS only wins because as I alluded to already, he has set himself up to be "THEE" MC. And I pretty much believe him.
