"Observations from listening to the BLACK KEYS Pandora station"

Rap is not the music of working class/poor people
any more

Rap is now bougie nigga music

Sorry, its true

I'm listening to these Black Keys-ish types sing about
regular shit

regular BLACK people shit

SOULFULLY...way more soulfully than rap does now

Rap is now the celebratory music...and that's FINE

But that's what it is

Its the "I wish" and "celebrate" music...rap is for
making yourself feel powerful

It always had that...always

But there was always a part of the art that made niggas
feel alright about how we were doing, the toil

It just doesn't do that anymore...this Black Keysish
type shit does it WAAAY better

o and I'm one of those niggas who climbed the ladder,
should listen to rap more, got more to celebrate, etc

But I'm fucking with this blue collar music tough

They are a solid band though. The problem is there are not that many good rock acts comming up any more. Therefore when a pretty solid band comes out ie Kings of Leon, Black Keys etc. come out every one gravitates toward them and their talent gets over exaggerated.

It's just radio won't allow anything that isn't straight ahead rock on the stations. Black Keys aren't horrible but definitely changed their sound to become more radio friendly which they're welcome to do but I'll stick to the early stuff

That's the problem..... I'm sure someone on here can rattle off a bunch of names but the vast majority of us couldn't, myself included.

I've listened to all of their albums and consider myself a fan, I still think that their almost legendary status right now is slightly exaggerated though.

No one here said legendary. That's the impression I get out there though in talking to people... Maybe legendary is a little over the top but their talent is def. exaggerated.

They are still a tight band and Im not mad at them. I guess all I'm saying is that I wish there where more modern bands out there that where at least on the same level talent wise right now as the Black Keys.

Because I really don't buy or even listen to too much new rock music... I'm basically down to the Black Keys and the Deftones... I really wish there were more...

edit: I'm not saying there aren't any good rock bands out besides the Deftones and Black Keys, but not really any that have caught my ear...

Yea that new Jack White sounds pretty good from what I have heard so far.

I've checked out a couple of bands Like The Fleet Foxes Grizly Bear and The Shins. I def. gotta check out Alabama Shakes.

A lot of these bands deserve more credit than what they are getting. I guess that's been the case for good quality music for a while now though. Even the Black Keys have been around for 10 years now without getting their proper shine until very recently.

Shins are dope, but I haven't heard their new album..

very very cool rock shit.. whole album goes pretty hard..

and regarding the Black Keys.. i know this thread isn't really *about* them... but i haven't really been much of a fan since Rubber Factory... and imho, i think they're lucky the White Stripes hung up their cleats... i always held a little personal "grudge" against the keys for being in the same lane as the stripes and not as good or creative lol..

They sound generic to me. They try to be bluesy and soulful but it fails. The lead singer don't have the voice for it. IMO rock is in just as bad shape as hiphop, boring bands like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes winning right now. The Black Keys are alright can't believe they are one of the biggest bands out there. The bands I like Deerhunter, Bombay Bicycle Club, Ty Segall, Jacuzzi Boys I don't see them blowing up. Maybe Cage The Elephant has a chance.

But i'm not trying to compare or say who's better than who.Even though I kinda started to. The bands I listed are just my personal preference. I don't expect folks to agree. The Black Keys don't appeal to me that's all.

And what the entire hell were Black Keys doing bringing out John Fogerty at Coachella and covering 'The Weight'? I take back at least 15% of the bad things I've said about them in the past. At LEAST.

In response to Reply # 26

I will admit I'm kind of mystified by the current scale of the Keys' success, when it's mostly among people who talk about how they're a great iteration of the blues, but those same people don't actually listen to blues.

It's funny, I'm currently ripping a Fat Possum sampler from 1994 as I type this. Who woulda guessed then that Fat Possum's biggest success would be two skinny white dudes who look like extras from Flight of the Conchords. The Jon Spencer/RL Burnside collabos did a lot for RL and Fat Possum, but I'm not sure they did a lot for blues.

The band's not bad, but I just kinda think they're redundant when I've got records Butterfield's 'East West', the Who's 'The Who Sing My Generation', Allmans records as well as plenty of blues that doesn't cross over into rock territory close at hand.

Then again, I'm old.

i grew up with the 70's stuff like Albert King and the regional R&B stuff like Denise LaSalle
when i found the internet i got heavy into stuff from the 30's on back

but now i'm more interested in stuff coming out of my own generation and the Keys have that more polished 70's sound i can get with. Nowadays i'm just kind of getting into blues rock and psychedelic stuff thats a bit funky and moody at the same time

the thing thats hard to find is a singer i can stand. i like Dan's voice. its got just the right amount of dirty white guy.

very cool that you're versed on the source material that informs their rootsier side. I've met more than enough people in life that say they love blues; their favorite blues guitarist is Eric Clapton.

Hearing your take on why you're getting into that sound now is cool for me as well; I grew up on a steady diet of rock, and followed (and am still following) the roots backward, but feel kinda like I heard enough similar sounding stuff in my youth.

Trusting you may have heard Dirtbombs 'Ultraglide in Black' - it's a decade old now, and more toward soul than blues, but does one of the better jobs I've heard of fusing old Black music with newer sounds.

they're a relatively unknown independent band from tennessee
they can have a sorta southern country/gospel feel to them in some songs, but i love these guys (and girl) and think they could fit the bill.
http://www.glossary.us/
their fifth album has always been free on their website, and there's videos for some of their songs there

there is this buy bahamas (afie jurvanen) from toronto, he gets classified as folk a lot, but they way he plays his guitar on his sophomore album barchords and the songs he sings could sorta fit in with how the black keys sometimes sound lately.

the band Zeus, from toronto, i'm not sure if they'd really fit your recommendation, but they evoke something classic-rocky very well

they arent really black keysy at all, but two cotton jones songs, blood red sentimental blues and i am the changer, i think are really good and fit the vibe of some of the black keys slower stuff

have you listened to jessica lea mayfields albums? she's put out to pretty impressive LPs with really strong songwriting for someone her age, and dan auerbach loves her and produced both the albums, id say look for her second one Tell Me

im not totally sure if they fit, but check out Blitzen Trapper either way, their album Furr was really strong.

im actually struggling to think of these without my music in front of me

not this weak folk guitar business

but idk after running through the youtubes. this one album seems pretty good tho

yeah they just put out a new record so i'm probably gonna go back and check their stuff out soon, i was going off memory and they sound pretty strong live.

yeah i think my head was in more of a auerbach place, when the night comes and whatnot. theres the dead weather, but jack white was mentioned up there already. do you like the arctic monkeys? they were opening for them, a couple of their recent b sides are great.

if you like the 2 man dynamic theres japandroids, or PS I Love You, tho they don't really make that kind of music. I'm being very Canadian right now, im struggling lol its not that easy to nail that kinda guitar and blues.

i've seen Joe Bonamassa's name thrown around with those two, but i'm not sure if i like it quite as much. i actually didn't know about gary clark jr., im liking his sound.

you might like the Delta Saints
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aKj3mgBIKQ&feature=relmfu
theres some related songs to Black Rebel Motorcycle club which might fit the rootsy bill, and then The Muggs had some decent sounding instumental stuff. lol this is how im researching

i still want to suggest you try glossary's free album, i really think
the sound could fit with some of the stuff in here, they've recently gotten a more country sound but this album was much more thoroughly blues rock throughout and i think the guitar sound fits and his voice works enough.
try the songs Blood on the Knobs, Bitter Branch, Little Caney, i personally love Only Time Will Tell and Gasoline Soaked Heart.

That's the point

MAINSTREAM rap is about spending money and whining
about relationships and fame

Of course there's dope rappers on the uground who
speak to the blue collar experience and I fuck
with them

But its weird how rap no longer produces popular music
that is relevant to the average citizen in this world

Because there's nothing really WRONG with what it

But its time we just tell it like it is

For example:

I just came from the gym

"Jocking Jay-Z" came on the iPOD

Man, that's a GREAT SONG!!! Makes you feel good
when you're getting your miles in, your weights in,
your squats in!

Maybe even makes you feel good about your outfit

Or whatever good stuff you got going on in life

But the other 23.5 hours of the day?

LOL

it ain't work music; it don't relate to shit
else that 99.9999% of people will ever experience

Motherfucking Black Keys got an album called EL CAMINO

On some STRUGGLING MAN SHIT

And again: that's COMMERCIAL rock music

That ain't their underground shit

I'm damn near scared to fuck with underground rock

I might feel bougie at one of those sets LOL

I agree about hip hop being a far cry from it's street and blue collar roots. The last ppl I can remember that did it well was early Kanye (He's anything but now but the whole underdog thing was his main appeal for awhile) and Little Brother

They're pretty folky but they're a prime example of how blue collar and every other genre of music is getting..

I completely agree with this thread, I think it's so BS when someone like Russell Simons tries to say rap is the poetry of the streets...

NO, rap is now the synthetic cash cow that preys on the mind of the less and even average fortunate for their vanity and false wishes to be wealthy.. these empty wants, feed the pockets of the conglomerate company execs and their shareholders

THATS IT, SIMPLE

Way back in the day, maybe.

But blue collar black folks listen to Ross and Rihiana.

Blue collar white folks rock to Nickelback, Insane Clown Posse, and Country and Western.

My construction working Mexicano peeps still rocking that Norteno, Narco-Corrido, or Tejano. Them PR's and DR painters and delivery men are on that Reggaeton. (at least that's what I hear blasting out the windows in their hoods)

The main audience for blues, folk, and what not is upper crust/white collar folks.

The proverbial roadside Honky Tonk has a dj playing Drake and LMFAO, followed by Nirvana and Journey (or R. Kelly and George Clinton)

Because they are tired and don't have the time
to sift through obscurity

Doesn't really have anything to do with the post
topic, though

Rick Ross has been outed as a fraud and basically
makes records lying about his life

And that's COOL

I got no problem with that

But there's a reason why the turnover is so
fast in rap now -- kids don't have a connection
to the music because they don't relate, which
makes them more inclined to just toss shit by
the wayside

Look at how fast 50 cent fell

Why? He didn't make music that his generation
could IDENTIFY with

It was all flash in the pan rap

If Ying Yang twins goes on tour now, nobody attends

GZA can perform tomorrow in most cities and have at
least a *decent* sized show

Its because the former had hits that nobody related to

GZA had smaller hits that people actually connected with

This is why making relatable music always pays

The Roots are a testament to that

he's connecting with most of Kanye's male fans, while also obviously being mega huge with the women. I would've said Wayne was the last megastar, but Drake actually seems poised to usurp him at the rate he's going.

that's true, kinda flipped from the 80's when it was rock excess and hiphop provided the voice for average man to rap about his environment

I copped his discography and started off with Hair. Loved it. Slaughterhouse, not so much. Listening to Twins and it sounds like it's in the middle of those two. If I liked Hair should I go for the White Fences sound more? What's your favorite album?
