I think I'm supposed to like him...my read is that his fanbase is that demographic of "real hip hop head who are afraid to be labeled a backpacker but don't want to overcompensate in the other direction either"
I have literally tried to like this dude and every song I hear he is literally horrible
He's like a sucky, older version of Lupe (who, ironically JE fans hate)

i'm not a jay electronica fan btw i've heard maybe 4 songs by this guy and he's aight but not enough to grab me either i don't know about beggin niggas to make me like him tho waste of time

*for me* Jay Electronica's biggest strength is that he says ill shit. I listen to him and I'm just like.......*verse starts*...... ill.......*next verse*........ill
He just has that quality for me, same as Nas, Nas would just say ill shit. A lot of MC's lack this quality, they don't say the right stuff/ put the right words together.
I don't think there's a science in understanding what words/phrases sound "ill" together, which is why so few MC's can do it.
You either can or can't. Rakim just said ill shit to.
Jay-Z rarely says ill shit, but he's still a great MC.

I don't know how to quantify/qualify it.
If you don't think what he says is ill then you probably wouldn't like him, because it sounds like he's spitting gibberish otherwise, because he really doesn't have a ton over redeeming qualities.
And yeah I'm not gonna try and make you like Jay Elect, maybe he's just not for you.

exactly.
dude puts words together unlike anything i've ever heard. he clearly has a unique way of thinking and i think it translates to amazing verses and rhyme patterns.

He's a cross between Black Thought and The Game, not as nice as either, but I see the appeal
He not in the same galaxy as nice as Thought but when he goes off I can see some semblance of Thought's legendary flow (just with way worse lyrics)
He's closest to The Game, though I think the Game has more natural talent
But that's his best comparison...he's like the less commercial/gang bangery The Game...he does nothing but spit cliches and he drops a lot of run of the mill rap references...the names of his songs, for example...all huge gimmicks
Like the Game, he think his lines are hotter than they are
Unlike the Game, Jay seems to think he's qualified to preach
