The only song I think sounds a little dated is "Gz up, Hoes down". Doesn't sound as full (Even though the sample is pretty epic) as the the rest as the album. Songs like "Ain't No Fun" and "Doggy Dogg World" are probably the best examples of how fresh it sounds still, both could easily be made today.

But, to be fair, outside of the Knee Deep bassline, each beat was really pretty different. One of the beautiful things about early-to-mid-90s Dre beats was how many different elements they each had. There was always so much going on in his beats. So while it's easy for us to pick out the bassline because we care enough, I don't think it's something that ruins any of those beats. In fact they're all pretty great.

Oh, and Doggy Dogg World didn't use that same sample.

There are just just extra notes added in the bass line, still the same groove.

Take out the extra notes from the bassline and you have four main notes. Each take up two beats, and the third (Bb) is delayed and comes on the two of the second measure.

D C | Bb A |

In numbers, you have 1, 7, 6, 5 (minor key).

You don't really even need numbers because Knee Deep is in the same key. The jacked bass line is the same four basic notes (D, C, Bb, A), with the Bb delayed. Dre Day takes the same thing down to the key of C (C, Bb, Ab, G). What's My Name is the same thing taken down to B (B, A, Gb, E). G Funk Intro is the same thing but in Db (Db, B, A, Ab).

Doggy Dogg World sounds the most different because it isn't sampled, it's replayed. And whoever replayed it added a couple extra notes in between the progression (probably to try to make it sound a bit different), but it's still the Knee Deep bass line.

That said tho, I think that each one of them was replayed...there's some different elements to the bassline in Dre Day as well, especially near the end of the song where the pitch seems to go up and down rapidly which does not appear to be a direct jack from the song.

But again...good breakdown. Always good to get some firsthand knowledge.

But the first three were made with that same kind of sound (that Knee Deep key bass) and they don't have as many extra notes in the loop so they are definitely more recognizable.

They're all replayed. That was Dre's steez.

And while I appreciate you writing it all out (way better than I could have done btw-lol) as a bass player, you know better than anybody that those "extra" notes are kinda important.

Like i said, it's a similar progression so the bassline will be similar as well, but it's still not the 'Knee Deep' bassline.

It's like Don't Stop Believing vs With or Without You. Same progression, different everything else.

But nah man, Dre "The GOAT" he's the best ever. Not just a mere beat- maker but a producer, much like a director. He "changed" hip hop music forever, even today producers are rockin G-Funk non-stop.

Dre back then and even today I enjoy his 90's work far more. But because he doesn't have major label backing, units sold, and name recognition he get over shadowed by Dre.

Plus Dre is a hell of a A&R. Most people will bring up the fact he "discovered" or put other artist on as factor to his "greatness" behind the boards

Daz

DJ Quik

Ants Banks

Battlecat

All have production that stood the test of time. Just dont' have that mainstream radio Top 40 hits like Dre did.

"BigGhostface" is NOT the rapper Ghostface. It's some dude using the name to get noticed.

Yes a bit harsher than some of the laid back albums listed, but everytime I revisit this album I'm always amazed.

I think I'm always going to bump this album until I die, wait.. in the future there won't be old age.. so i will bump this forever!
