But I for one will. Number 2 to Madonna!!! As soon as I saw it I thought of you and redemption. I'll probably never hear it because I could care less about Mr. Richie's music at this point (no shade just being honest), but this is a testament not just to what he's doing now, but to how impactful he was in the past.

the thing that was telling to me was when I saw "Stuck On You" listed as one of JET's Top Singles in a random late 1984 issue.

that album had been out for a while, and of ALL the songs released as singles from that record... THAT one?

and hitting like that speaks volumes. lot of these turkeys act like they know something about music, they play music listners on tv and like they can talk the talk and walk the walk, but alot of them can't.

Lionel B.Richie wrote standards which crossed a whole lot of line of people. the only other artist who could pull this off would be Ray Charles.

meaning his material fit right with country, however also R&B and Pop.

and just read about Lionel talking about his crib and on the first floor he has Slav shackles in every room on the first floor as a reminder of his people and where he came from. alot of folks don't know how deep Lionel. B.Richie is.

on the musical tip you can't front it and the brother got it like that.

I'm looking at his wiki. How'd nothing come after his 3rd solo album until 1992? And even then, only a greatest hits album, and no full album of new material until 1996?

Dude rattled off 13 straight top-10 pop hits from 1981 to 1986 then just STOPPED? Who does that?

but dancing on the ceiling before this last album was his last highest charted album.

Lionel had personal issues and he also took care of his parents and also he had two surgerys on his throat.

but he still toured and still does.

his stats and Jewlery speak for themselves.

dude wrote like nobody's business. i still say that after Stevie Wonder's dominance in R&B from the late 70's onward that Lionel B.RIchie is the Golden Pen.i'm talking about larger than life standards. them songs hold way up.

Proof with these results.

i don't need no vindication because I know my stuff and I told these pepridge farm turkeys about Lionel B.Richie for years.

Lionel was going through a lot of personal problems back then, so he withdrew from the industry for the most part

I remember a story about his wife beating the shit out of him when she caught him with another woman...

They had been separated for a few years and I think the divorce and fight over money had Lionel preoccupied.

those are pretty much the hottest country acts around

post commodores Richie has always been embraced by white folks, and the songs already lean in that direction

it's like this is his version of a "duets" album

and it was released during a relatively slow time

it *could* have failed, but it strikes as *very* calculated to succeed

You'd crush him. You'd say he was over the hill and pathetic for trying to rehash his old glories. He wouldn't even have to work with country stars. He could do an album with the biggest pop and r&b stars, the exact same formula Richie's using and you would bash him until the cows came home.

i would love to see Prince comeback because a studio reminder of what he once represented is so long overdue it ain't even funny and with a straight face you can't even tell me when was the last time Prince made an album that people were talking?

i knock prince for making underwritten, overproduced, over playing and jamming, and in dire need of a editor material and just throwing a whole bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier tracks out there. which he has been doing IMO since 88 onwards.

Prince in all honesty I'd like to see him work with a Marcus Miller, a Steely dan, a George Duke, David Sanbourn, Michael Henderson, cats and acts who can challenge him on the playing tip on the real and update that thing.

prince already tried the santana thing with rave back in 99 and it didn't make a dent.

Prince needs a Producer and somebody that makes him do songs and then he can stretch out.

Lionel Richie always been country and this is a smart and good look in a ray charles type of way.

i always give Prince his due for the past and as a live act but as a studio act I can't remember anything remotely worth talking about in over 20 years IMO. MJ did this with thriller 25 and it worked pretty well for him.

i mean if you got legendary songs sure why not? James brown remade his tracks once he changed labels, etc... alot of acts do however to flip them into a whole different genre is truly special IMO.

This right here... ^^^

Country is a sure way to sell some records... especially for a guy like Richie who was always loved by whites.

Crazy thing is if Madonna didn't have the album with every concert ticket deal Lionel would have been #1 last week. She will do 40 to 45K next week (88% drop) while Lionel is at 100K on the second week. He will probably outsell her in the US by week 3.

>guy like Richie who was always loved by whites.

I don't know if that was always his rep. In fact, I'd wager that before "Easy"? They may not have known who he was (as much as when he was a solo artist... and even then, not since the second album).

From that NPR article linked above (swipe):

'Just Too Black' And 'Not Black Enough'

Listening back to Richie's catalog, suddenly country music makes a lot of sense. But sometimes it's hard for artists to cross genres.

"You know what happens a lot of the time, record companies — mainly for just marketing — we have to try to divide things up, so we can clearly market things," Richie says. "But I remember walking into a radio station and the guy said, 'I'm sorry, Lionel, but this record is just too black.' And I said, 'OK, well, it's No. 1 on the R&B .' I came back with the next record, Easy Like Sunday Morning, and the guy said, 'OK, Lionel, now this record is perfect for pop, but it's not black enough.' So, it's just one of those things where I've kind of gone against the grain throughout my entire career. And if I had to have another title for this record besides Tuskegee, it would be called All the Songs That They Told Me Would Ruin My Career. Every time they told me, 'This is not where you're supposed to be,' I just went there, just defying the laws."

</end swipe>

Lionel Richie is very much like the MC Hammer of R&B.

Lionel is essentially the enduring symbol of genre-crossing crossover, predating Prince who came in the game with a host of underground and "un-traditional" influences that he would brandish as a solo artist to much success (and minimized criticism). However, because of the success he held, and not only that, the degrees to which he flipped the script he took a huge hit with the crowd he started with.

Such a reaction, both critical and commercial, overshadows the risk he took as an R&B artist (which, never mind its tendency not to hold on to tradition anyway) to include a song like "Easy" on a Commodores album, which essentially was at the time, a bit of anathema. The Commodores even took a hit for their album MIDNIGHT MAGIC in the eyes of some fans, as I've read, for going "disco". Which is bullshit in my eyes... that album is not only low on the actual "disco-by-numbers", but it's essentially a showcase for the band's excellent R&B arrangements and in particular bassist Ronald LaPread (one of the unsung heroes of R&B bass). Outside of Lionel's signature numbers the album is pretty much hardcore R&B and non-crossover funk with a touch of late '70s sophistication.

Compare that with Hammer. He was essentially an underground rap artist who made party music with a Bay Area flavor, then hit it big with obvious Rick James and Prince samples and R&B remakes. Then he was EVERYWHERE. Endorsing shoes, chicken, essentially getting the James Brown endorsement. While I won't go in so far to defend his "hardcore credibility", certainly 2 LEGIT 2 QUIT was his DANCIN' ON THE CEILING album wise. He took a big commercial hit and went so far to change his image radically to fit in with the mainstream which had now gone "Rap & Bullshit" style hardcore.

You'll never see him get the props of a RUN-DMC or NWA because his records past his first don't really have that "underground appeal" and the ones in the middle before FUNKY HEADHUNTER kind of appeal to ages lower than most rap did... but his success did take some of the "sting" off promoting rap during the daytime.

It's not a perfect allegory but I see the similarity.

Lionel is a Great songwriter and Artist period. Hammer was a good artist who had a few big hits, however everybody in hip hop eventually did what Hammer did.

there was a time when you were called hardcore, soft and or pop bubblegum rapper.

Hammer paved a way for puffy, nelly and others to cross over however dr dre, snoop, jay z,nas and others hit with sampled tracks so it is a wash in hindsight.

Lionel B.Richie is closer to what Ray Charles was doing that is the better comparrison because they both went country and it fit there music and presentation as artists and they still had there R&B and Pop fans and other fans in between.

but the reason why any of this works is because Lionel B RIchie is a respected talented artist and songwriter in the first place.

gotta have the songs and they have to hit with people. he did that incredible being in a band and then solo two careers and ain't many acts been where Lionel B Richie has. he has songs both in a Group and Solo period.

>it *could* have failed, but it strikes as *very* calculated to
>succeed

since it is very much in the "Supernatural" (Santana album) blueprint that a number including one of my other favorites (Herbie Hancock) have ridden to (Grammy) success in the past. Targeting a market that actually still purchases music is also a "safe move".

Even so, I still find it kind of surprising, that even with the "super guests" Lionel would still chart so high (in the USA) considering all the other factors in play, including the depressed market.

Mike McDonald (who has done something similar with his cover albums) went platinum with the first one, but peaked at #14 US/17 US R&B. The sequel fared better at the charts, but only went gold. Then again, that was in 2003 and 2004... which were still better than 2012 industry wise.

folks don't forget the Great songwriting and great artistry of Lionel B RIchie and the songs speak for themselves.

there are white Pop acts trying to hit country and have met with mixed to no results. Jon Bon Jovi gets out Jon Bon Jovi by Keith Urban and Bon Jovi been trying to pull a Lionel.

its a testimony to Great songs and a Great artist getting his due.

those Michael Mcdonald albums in the early 00's were white bread and constipated sounding. if I hadn't grown up on Michael Mcdonald I would have thought he was as funky as Jim neighbors or something with how white breaded those covers were.

carlos santana and clive Davis couldn't do what Lionel B.Richie has just done because these are Lionel's songs and they are mainly 25-30 years old and still pack a punch.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerfriedman/2012/04/09/madonna-mdna-will-have-biggest-second-week-drop-in-chart-history/

Madonna‘s “MDNA” album had the biggest second week drop in chart history last week, I am told. When all the numbers are in on Tuesday night, “MDNA” will have fallen from number 1 by 88%–from 359,000 copies in its first week to roughly 46,000 the second week. Wow. The first week’s sales, as I revealed exclusively (and then the New York Post lifted it from us), most of Madonna’s first week sales were CDs that were included in the sale of concert tickets. That promotion artificially inflated Madonna’s numbers, putting her first before Lionel Richie and his “Tuskegee” album. In the second week, Richie fell only 47% and sold about 110,000 albums–which is normal.

“Tuskegee” will now finish much higher than “MDNA.” I do think that all the people involved in the Madonna ticket-CD deal should apologize to Richie for denying him his rightful place at number 1, starting with Billboard and SoundScan. But Richie’s consolation is that he has a major hit, while “MDNA” is a total dud. So far, “MDNA” has not produced anything like a hit single either, no radio play or anything to provide organic promotion. But Madonna’s concert tour with Live Nation will be a big hit, so it’s not like we have to worry about her financial situation.

no one is claiming Lionel didn't fall off artistically (maybe maxx, but that's it). I for one heard "Dancing On The Ceiling" and basically saw he was ready to rest on his laurels

however, you know, this Prince defense is precisely the kind of shit that gets the Maxxes (and less fervent critics) of the dude riled up

the truth is, as expressed in another thread here (authored by go mack) Prince has had a lot of good music scattered throughout the years, but he hasn't brought it all together in an album that pleases people outside his devoted fanbase to pick it up. they will, however, come in masses to see him live on stage. And you know why that is.

that Lionel is able to do so, from a fanbase that might not have given that much a fuck about him in 2012 (or maybe they did, I dunno)? that's what we're giving props to. it's easy to say anyone could do that shit, but I guaran-TEE you that few really could. you have to be an engaging personality in the first place to pull that shit off.

Prince MIGHT, but you know he's about as anti-social as it gets musically. and plus, when it comes to the art of revisiting on his previous works, Prince prefers to re-record tracks that sounded much better in 1983 and zap all the goodness out of it.

and Prince has, EXCEPT for that aforementioned devoted fanbase, gotten a PASS for doing that. he got a pass for throwing a tantrum when the record company wanted him to get with the program, he got a pass for basically being an ass in general several times over. he's gotten a pass for a ZILLION things, some of which we PRAISE him for doing. one dude here called him the post pass-gettinest dude ever. he is.

this propping of Lionel has zero to do with Prince, in short.

bottom line I support and roll with who i dig and speak on them like a true Music fan and they can't take it. Haters come at me because they have no game and also just ride with what others tell them to say.

this is a copy cat clique spot and its the usual folks Hating and I know it.

they can't talk no Music shop with me so they gotta pair up like Mixed doubles, but these turkeys thinking they are serving up an Ace, but end up side out against me.

they don't know half of what they pretend to lead on. anytime a turkey gotta be schooled about Lionel B Richie and his musical impact in a Band and Solo career well then they don't know much.

Lionel had classics while alot of these jive sucker turkeys were just learning how to operate a Speak and spell and watching ROmper Room

you're just fucking irritating as all hell.

anyway, i wouldn't expect you to 'get it' and as such

and the man is a respected Artist and his music moved people and still does. yeah Lionel is way past his prime and peak, however his past can hang with anybody though, because those songs are some of the most important tracks over the past 25-30 years and that Man in his Prime was a Musical monster which showcased strong versatility and depth period.

if lionel still being able to have a commercial success is presented as a W, this bamma ass dude can't say shit about P no more...simple as that. we can all disagree about what is and what isn't good music by lionel or P, but don't come with this bullshit, dogg...Prince been WAY MORE successful post-prime than Lionel, ARRUH, Mike Jax and whoever else Maxx throws out to undercut Prince's legacy.

Nah, dogg...I'm bout to start treating Prince slander on this wack ass seen-its-best-days board like I treat Duke and Zeke hate on the sports board...you say they name in a way that I find REMOTELY negative, I'm showing up like Candyman, dogg. End of discussion.

I saw the video for Endless love with some white country chick...

and there was a Lionel Ritchie Special on one of the networks and he was in the audience giving a standing ovation to Marc Anthony and some other white chick doing one of his songs....

It reminded me of the VH1 Hip Hop appreciations they do with older artist. I wonder what the reception would be for CD sales of Low End Theory/It takes a Nation of Millions/Walk This Way etc with new artist flipping them.

Could Hip Hop do this and win? Not that they need to but I wonder if they could do more Live albums of classic Hip Hop Albums.

In response to Reply # 0

anyway you slice this, Lionel won

link: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lionel-richie-tuskegee-best-selling-349809

The Grammy winner's latest country album is the best-selling album released in 2012 for the first half of the year.

R&B and pop icon Lionel Richie's third No.1 album Tuskegee has sold approximately 912,000 copies in the first half of 2012, more than any other album released this year, according to Billboard.
our editor recommends

The country duets album was released on March 26, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the country albums chart.

Tuskegee features duets of 13 of Richie's classic hits, featuring vocals by Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Jason Aldean and Kenny Chesney. It claimed the top spot on the overall Billboard Top 200 albums chart for two consecutive weeks and held steady atop the Billboard Country Albums chart for four weeks.

With sales now topping 934,000, it's been a successful past few months for the pop veteran.

“What a year!” Richie says in a statement. “This album has taken me on an unforgettable journey filled with new friends, new jokes and new musical inspirations. I am overwhelmed and humbled by the success of Tuskegee and am thrilled by how it has been embraced by music lovers of all ages and backgrounds around the world.”

Richie is scheduled to perform on NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday, July 17 and will appear on the E! Network's Chelsea Lately on Wednesday, July 18. The singer is performing shows across the United States and is scheduled to tour Europe this fall.

L. Richie pulled a Santana...Not in terms of impact or record sales....but in a even much smarter manner...

This is essentially a greatest hits album....But you really want to know why it's about to skate to platinum on old ass songs?

Country music has the most loyal followers...(yeah, I know this is a no shit point...but it is what it is...)

In fact, country music right now is the most dependable outlet in terms of record sales...It's the reason why Hootie's frontman can sale a shit load of albums and tour to 15,000 people a night....It's the reason why Bon Jovi is about to extend their country music success they had with that Sugarland chick and do a more country influenced album...

So yeah, fans are def. lapping up Lionel's hits...But the real drawing power was having the likes of Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Jennifer Nettles, Shania Twain, Willie Nelson, ect, ect on a record with Richie...

To me, it was a brilliant move....Great songs? Yep....

But it should all be put in perspective....

Country music fans love their artists...Add some of those great songs and bam...That's the moral to the story....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

where to start

the man got the songs period, like Qunicy Jones always says its the songs man. 1)

Lionel always was country and not just in his manner or attitude, etc,, but songs like oh no, still, three times a lady, lucy, stuck on you, etc,, and of course Lady.

deep river woman was a duet with Alabama back in 86 so its not like he pulled a Santana in as much as he truly came home to his roots. period 2)

you can have all the names in the world and that is a cute cheap shot to knock Lionel I see you Murph getting your Keivn Hart drum roll hit, however the songs are there and folks grew up on them and loved this man's talent period 3)

Darrius rucker is a country man at heart period. i applaud any brother pulling off country even though its our music and it got stolen, thats another thread and time, back in 94 when Rhythm and blues meets country i have that album and it was good, however even with big names it didn't sell a whole lot. so its doesn't always mean gold. 4)

Snoop Dogg or Snoop Lion has Willie Nelson on his latest and vice versa, however it doesn't mean folks are going to get all giddy over it. Neal Mccoy ain't exactly a household name and he still does country. 5)

Country music is the real music out now because of the instrumentation, story lines and balance, however just like R&B which for the most part went euro and hip hop, country has watered down as well. however you still gotta play and have the songs.

LIONEL B. RICHIE WON and its OUTRAGIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its about the songs and what they mean Man

No more reason to spell it out for u, homie..

Some of those Lionel songs are indeed classic and great...But you are a madman (and I know that is an oxymoron when it comes to you...jokes) for thinking that having a shit load of country artists on this album is not driving primary sales for 20 plus years old songs...

Switch those country artists with new school R&B acts or even new school pop acts, and you don't see platinum on this project...Country fans LOVE their country...

And you know what? That's part of the beauty of what Lionel is doing...

Bravo to him...Shit is brilliant...Hell, if I'm Mary J. Blige's people I'm getting Lionel's manager on the phone right now to see how dude gathered the country music talent to pull it off...It's a winner...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

you lost and badly on this one Murph throw in the towel and call it a "L"

not everybody can pull this one off period and you know this.

i bet you cash money that Babyface,Beyonce, Mary J Bliege, Mariah Carey, Usher, and alot of other acts couldn't pull that off and you already know why.

they ain't got the songs that translate like that period.

Lionel B. RIchie got the songs and its all about the songs period.

bottom line Yo, Lionel B.Richie is One of the Greatest Songwriters Ever Period.
