"What's Black music now? If Hip Hop & R&B have gone Pop."

I remember where Miles in his autobio was saying how it was still the Black thing that was still leading the way with music and dancing back in the 80's and early 90's. But to me, nowadays it seems like the opposite. So, what's Black music nowadays?

has traditionally been dance oriented music. it's only been with the shift in the hip-hop that's been somewhat commercially successful for the past 15 years (acts like Wu-Tang, Redman, even alot of the neo-soul wasn't really music you could dance to) that black music has been about individuality and self-expression. for the most part (and i'm generalizing here) the music was about the struggle of life while black and not a political or social activity outside of the focal point of dancing.

if i said that black music was about folks dancing about the struggle, then i misspoke. i meant to say that even in the fields on the plantations, the music was a means to escape over a means to straight out rebel (although in someways is was about that too.)

it's been consistently more about the message and escape and feeling 'free' than anything else since.

kinda the 'free yo ass...' line by George Clinton

Or Esperanza Spalding?

Or Snarky Puppy?

That's where black music is going.
